SUMMARY Menopause is an endocrine phenomenon characterized by gradual estrogen decline. This is a stage in a woman's life in which contraception is extremely important as the risks associated with pregnancy and childbirth increase, both maternal issues associated with higher incidence of comorbidities and issues related to fetal abnormalities, mitochondrial abnormalities, or genetic syndromes. On the other hand, there is a growing number of women who have postponed motherhood and need effective contraception, but without prolonging the return to fertility. Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), low-dose oral hormonal contraceptives and non-oral contraceptives are preferred. The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system is a very good alternative that can maintain endometrial protection after menopause. Definitive methods such as tubal ligation and vasectomy are options for couples that already have their offspring. In this review, we present evidence for contraceptive indication and the effects of hormonal methods on climacteric including options for contraception, control of bleeding during perimenopause and of climacteric symptoms, as well as the transition from such methods to hormone therapy if indicated.

This study examines the transformations that trigger business models with paid content strategies on news organizations under the theoretical framework of market orientation. The results show three main factors: those related to competence, to the organization culture and to understanding of needs and wants of the audience. The findings also suggest that online newspapers business models with paid content strategies are more like experiments or forays rather than definitive methods that monetize the exponential growth of audience. In fact, none of the analyzed organizations could operate without outside aid.

This paper gives an overview of erosion mechanisms in elbows in oil and gas production systems. The nature of the erosion process itself makes it very difficult to develop some definitive methods or models to prevent or predict the erosion in elbows in all conditions. This paper provides a review of the subject which will help petroleum engineers to handle the erosion problems in oil and gas industry. This review is given of different erosion mechanisms connected with sand erosion and the factors that influence them, and then the review goes on to look at particulate erosion in elbows in more details. Conclusions are then drawn based on the above analyses.

Prenatal diagnosis is now an established part of modern obstetrical practice around the world. While the current definitive methods for prenatal diagnosis rely mainly on invasive procedures such as chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis, such procedures carry a low but definite risk of fetal loss. As a consequence of the procedure-associated risk of miscarriage, prenatal diagnosis is currently limited to pregnant women with an increased likelihood of bearing an abnormal fetus. To extend the application of prenatal diagnosis to all pregnant women, it has been a long-sought goal of researchers worldwide to introduce safer methods for prenatal diagnosis, towards noninvasive prenatal diagnosis.

The modern era of wildlife and protected area conservation in Nepal began in 1973 with the passage of comprehensive legislation, and has evolved very quickly as new priorities and problems have emerged. Here we explore the legal and managerial development of conservation areas, a recently-defined category of protected area designed to promote conservation through local-level participation and development. A review of the Conservation Area Management Regulations of 1996 shows that there are several potential problems inherent in this designation. As written, the regulations move power from the government to organizations under governmental contract. Thus, management authority largely remains top-down from the standpoint of local users. We also question how well the designation will protect some sensitive wildlife species, since organizations do not have law enforcement authority under Nepalese legislation.Despite these concerns, there have been several successful conservation area programmes in existence in Nepal since the 1980s and most of the issues addressed are surmountable with the current regulations, providing that several criteria are met. We propose that His Majesty's Government and organizations under contract develop more definitive methods of disbursing funds for local-level projects, and institute social impact assessments. In addition, more attention must be paid to wildlife law enforcement; independent assessments of important wild populations and unique habitats are needed. Finally, we discuss some broader issues that should be better addressed in Nepal and elsewhere, including cross-sectoral coordination within the government.

ABSTRACT A major impediment to understanding the biological roles of inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) has been the lack of sensitive definitive methods to extract and quantitate cellular polyP. We show that polyP recovered in extracts from cells lysed with guanidinium isothiocynate can be bound to silicate glass and quantitatively measured by a two-enzyme assay: polyP is first converted to ATP by polyP kinase, and the ATP is hydrolyzed by luciferase to generate light. This nonradioactive method can detect picomolar amounts of phosphate residues in polyP per milligram of extracted protein. A simplified procedure for preparing polyP synthesized by polyP kinase is also described. Using the new assay, we found that bacteria subjected to nutritional or osmotic stress in a rich medium or to nitrogen exhaustion had large and dynamic accumulations of polyP. By contrast, carbon exhaustion, changes in pH, temperature upshifts, and oxidative stress had no effect on polyP levels. Analysis of Escherichia coli mutants revealed that polyP accumulation depends on several regulatory genes, glnD (NtrC), rpoS,relA, and phoB.

Abstract The issuance of cholesterol as a Standard Reference Material (SRM) in 1967 started the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST; then named the National Bureau of Standards) on a major effort to help clinical laboratories establish and improve the quality of measurements they make. NIST now issues three kinds of SRMs for that purpose: analyte samples of certified purity as primary standards, serum samples having certified analyte concentrations as accuracy controls, and materials certified for calibrating instruments. In working with clinical laboratory scientists to establish Reference Methods (RMs) for measuring the analytes, NIST developed Definitive Methods (DMs) to use for evaluating RM accuracy and then used the DMs for assigning analyte values to its SRMs. The development of SRMs and DMs is discussed.
