Abstract: In this study, a commercial foundry sand (Seydisehir Eti Aluminium Co. Inc.) was provided as the starting material. Using this supplied casting sand, silica aerogel production was carried out by sol-gel method. Starting materials chemical components were determined by doing XRD and XRF analyses to starting industrial casting sand respectively. After analysing studies, sodium silicate solution was produced from commercial casting sand. During silica aerogel synthesize, 5 different pH degree was investigated including 2-4-6-8 and 9. Silica aerogel modification (Super hydrophobic) was made by choosing the optimum pH value. Afer then, on the synthesized experiment sample, FT-IR, BET, SEM and contact angle characterization studies were realised respectively. As a result of preliminary experiments done with different pH experiments, sample with the lowest density was determined as pH 8 value. Keywords: Casting sand, Sol-gel, Silica aerogel

Abstract As a volcanic country, Indonesia is rich in natural mineral resources. One of them is perlite that is spread across several provinces in Indonesia. One of the companies with a mining business permit (IUP) for perlite is CV Abdi Bersaudara, located at Padang Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra Province. Perlite rock can be processed through comminution and heating method. Crushed perlite can be used as sandblasting, slag coagulant, source of silica, foundry and steel industry, special casting sand and metal finishing. Meanwhile, the expanded perlite is a product of heated perlite with a temperature of 700⁰C-900⁰C. This research aimed to investigate the characters of perlite and expanded perlite from West Sumatra. Qualitative and quantitative analysis was conducted by laboratory experiments and testing, such as atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and optical microscope (OM). Based on the results of this study, West Sumatera perlite can be used as adsorbents, filter media, filler materials and planting media applications.

The use of sand as a mold in the casting process is very common. In this study, Balikpapan sand used as casting sand then analyzed its effect on hardness and fluidity of the Al-Si alloy. The research method used in this research is quantitative research methods using pre-experimental design, especially the one-shot case study model. The final results of this study will be obtained (1) the value of metal hardness from casting using the Micro Vickers Hardness Tester with a Hardness Vickers (HV) scale, (2) fluidity testing is carried out using the Birmingham method in order to determine the length of the cast metal flow (mm) on the final result of casting.

In the production process at PT X, such as casting process, required raw material in the form of casting sand. The sand transport process is done by a machine called a Bucket Elevator. The current condition of Bucket Elevator at Plant 2 PT X had some problems on its design due to the initial modification process to the machine that were deliberately done in order to ease the process of troubleshooting and repair on the machine to adjust the height of the drum shaft supported by the bearing, however, the modification causes a sand leak that impacted the lifetime of the bearing. The damage that occurs to the bearing of the Bucket Elevator can slow the production process at PT X down, which lasts between 120 hours to 134 hours per week. Therefore, it is necessary to modify the design of the Bucket Elevator machine in order to stop the sand leakage and be able to work optimally. The design modifications made, are changes to the shaft height adjusting mechanism of the Bucket Elevator 536 drum machine by providing a lock to minimize the leakage of sand that occurs and replace the bearing type to the type that is equipped with a seal to prevent the entry of sand into the bearings. The result of this modification can extend the lifetime bearing, thereby reducing production costs due to bearing replacement, and easing the troubleshooting and repairing process of the engine to adjust the height of the drum shaft supported by the bearings.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this activity is to conduct training for the community, especially from around Madiun, to be able to do aluminum waste treatment by doing re-casting to be printed into a craft that is worth selling. Re-casting in this activity uses the simplest tool in the hope that it can be reached by the target community. This casting can be done by using a simple kitchen by using a fire furnace with combustion using LPG. The training activity was held for 2 (two) days, with the details of the first day in the form of material about metals and casting while the second day was carried out by the practice. The results of this activity are in creasing knowledge about metals, especially aluminum and knowledge of simple casting practices.Keywords: Waste, aluminum, casting, sand moldABSTRAK Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah melakukan pelatihan kepada masyarakat khususnya dari sekitar Madiun agar dapat melakukan pengolahan limbah aluminium dengan melakukan pengecoran ulang untuk di cetak menjadi kerajinan yang layak jual. Pengecoran ulang dalam kegiatan ini menggunakan alat yang paling sederhana dengan harapan bisa dijangkau oleh masyarakat kalayak sasaran. Pengecoran ini dengan menggunakan dapur sederhana dengan menggunakan tungku api dengan pembakaran menggunakan LPG. Kegiatan pelatihan ini dilaksanakan selama 2 (dua) hari, dengan rincian hari pertama berupa materi tentang logam dan pengecoran sedang hari kedua adalah dengan pelaksanaan praktek. Hasil dari kegiatan ini adalah bertambahnya pengetahuan mengenai logam khususnya aluminium dan pengetahuan praktek pengecoran sederhana. Kata Kunci: Limbah, aluminium, pengecoran, cetakan pasir
