Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most important infectious diseases worldwide. Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is a live attenuated vaccine, entered into the childhood immunization program by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1974 to prevent TB. One of the relatively common complications of BCG vaccination is regional lymphadenitis. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the lymphadenitis incidence in BCG-vaccinated children in southwest Iran. Methods: In a prospective descriptive study, infants born from March to June 2017 were evaluated for BCG vaccine complications at two, four, six, nine, and 12 months of age in Ahvaz, southwestern Iran. Results: The study enrolled 1,506 infants (794 males and 712 females). Among the vaccinated infants, four (0.26%) had injection site reactions, and 106 (7.03%) presented lymphadenitis (66 males and 40 females). The lymphadenitis rate was significantly higher in males than in females (P = 0.024). The mean age at presentation was 4.28 ± 0.79 months. Suppurative lymphadenitis was seen in 53 (50%) cases and nonsuppurative lymphadenitis in 53 (50%) cases. About 80% of nonsuppurative lymphadenitis resolved entirely or partially after a one-year follow-up. Of 53 cases with suppurative lymphadenitis, 46 (43.4%) developed spontaneous drainage, and seven (6.6%) were drained by needle aspiration. No significant relationship was found between the BCG inoculation site and lymphadenitis rate. No other complications such as osteomyelitis or disseminated BCG infection were observed after one year of follow-up. Conclusions: The relatively high incidence of BCG lymphadenitis in this study may be due to the vaccine strain, young vaccinees, and improper vaccination techniques. In most cases, nonsuppurative lymphadenitis regressed spontaneously, and suppurative lymphadenitis was drained spontaneously or by needle aspiration.

Abstract Wild sheep (Ovis spp.) are of conservation concern throughout the Middle East. Little is known, however, about the natural history or ecology of this taxon. To better understand size relationships among wild sheep occupying Iran, we analyzed results from 120 females collected from widely separated ecosystems. Morphometrics and body weights for all age categories of females occupying the Khosh-Yeilagh Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Iran were larger than those for the same age classes of females occupying Bamou National Park in southwestern Iran. Females from Bamou National Park, however, obtained adult body weight (x‾ = 25.8 ± 2.47 [SD] kg) at an earlier age than those from the Khosh-Yeilagh Wildlife Refuge (x‾ = 36.6 ± 3.21 kg). Ecological differences between these two areas suggest that net primary productivity, which is a function of numerous climatic and geographical factors, has been a primary force contributing to these results. Weights and measurements reported here provide the basic information for additional, more detailed research necessary to fully understand the evolutionary significance and management implications of these differences in body size and emphasize the conservation value of even the most basic natural history information.

In the 1970s, the world knew the long-tailed nesokia Nesokia bunnii (Khajuria, 1981) (Rodentia, Muridae) from the Mesopotamian marshes of Garden of Eden in Southern Iraq. This distinct rodent was known from only five voucher specimens collected at the confluence of Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in southern Iraq while its occurrence in Southwestern Iran had never been reported. In the 1990s, a large extent of its natural habitat was catastrophically desiccated and the animal was last seen in the 1970s. Since then, the status of this elusive rodent was shrouded in mystery. In 2007, an extraordinary photograph of a carcass of this species came to the light from Hawizeh Marsh which was interpreted as concrete evidence of the species’ persistence in the marshes of southern Iraq after the desiccation in the last century. In 2021, after more than 40 years, exclusive photographic records of living N. bunnii were obtained for the first time from Central Marshes in southern Iraq and from Edhe’am Marsh in southwestern Iran. The new distribution range is highlighted in this note. Furthermore, the first photographs of living N. bunnii are provided along with notes on its ecology and behavior.

The impacts of deforestation on edaphic mesostigmatid mites were investigated in oak forests of Lordegan, southwestern Iran, from April to October. A total of twenty-one species belonging to eighteen genera and ten families were collected and identified. The Shannon-Wiener, Simpson, Jaccard's and Margalef biodiversity indices were used for data analyses. Among the collected species, Antennoseius bacatus with 29% and Sessilunchus hungaricus with 16% relative abundance were the most abundant and dominant species in human-disturbed and natural forests, respectively. The estimated values were higher in natural oak forest than in disturbed and cultivated habitat. Significant differences were observed in soil nitrogen content and soil organic carbon between the two habitats, but not in pH values. Significant effects of sampling time and habitat were found on all four indices, but the effect of their interactions on these indices was not significant. It can be concluded that the changes in soil quality that resulted from deforestation may have a major role in reducing the soil mite density and related diversity indices in disturbed forests.

Abstract The present study evaluated the dynamic changes in Sudan low systems during six decades (1957–2019), which were classified based on solar cycles. Rainfall days were extracted in January using data from 42 synoptic stations in the south and southwest regions of Iran. Then, the rainy days due to the Sudan low system were separated from the precipitation of the other atmospheric systems using the visual analysis of the maps. The synoptic analysis indicated that the sea level pressure has been decreasing at all sampling stations from the first to the sixth decade. Furthermore, decreasing elevation to −80 m (negative anomaly) in the 500 hPa level atmosphere from the first decade to the sixth decade, indicated further atmospheric instability and more strengthening of the Sudan low compared to previous decades. The contribution of advection moisture to the area increased within the region at 700 hPa. This implies that the role of the transferred moisture from the intertropical convergence zone is increasing in the systems transferred from Sudan and in the study area. In general, the share of Sudan low precipitation is increasing in the south and southwest regions of Iran. This result is a positive effect of the climate change on the study area.

Background: Nurses, as frontline health workers, are exposed to the risks of adverse mental health outcomes due to their direct contact with COVID-19 patients. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the mental health of frontline nurses in Behbahan, southwestern Iran. Methods: In this web-based cross-sectional study, data from 173 frontline nurses were collected in 3 COVID-19 referral hospitals in Behbahan, southwestern Iran. This study included demographic information and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28). Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the variables affecting mental health and anxiety symptoms. Results: The present study included 173 frontline nurses (nurses and nurse assistants), 71.7% of whom were female and 28.3% of whom were male. Further, 76.3% of frontline nurses were suspected of poor mental health, and 23.7% were mentally healthy. The results of the multivariable logistic regression model showed that female participants had poorer mental health than men (odds ratio [OR], 2.51; 95% CI, 1.16 - 5.41; P = 0.01). The mental health of nurses with a history of COVID-19 infection was poorer than that of nurses without a history of COVID-19 infection (OR, 3.3; 95% CI, 1.42 - 7.53; P = 0.006). Conclusions: The findings of our study showed that female nurses with a history of COVID-19 were more at risk for poor mental health. These groups need more attention and support in epidemics.

Abstract Background Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) is the second most common nosocomial infection in intensive care units (ICUs). The present study aims to determine the prevalence of pathogenic bacteria, their biofilm formation, and molecular typing from patients with HAP in southwestern Iran. Methods Fifty-eight patients with HAP participated in this cross-sectional study. Sputum and endotracheal aspirate were collected from each patient for isolation and detection of bacteria. Biofilm formation was evaluated using Congo red agar or Microtiter plate assay. The antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of the isolates were investigated. The multiplex polymerase chain reaction (M-PCR) technique was used to determine the Staphylococcal Cassette Chromosome mec (SCCmec) types of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains. All S. aureus isolates were typed using the agr typing method. A repetitive element sequence-based PCR (rep-PCR) typing method was used for typing of Gram-negative bacteria. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 15 and the chi-square test. Results Bacteria were isolated in 52 (89.7%) of patients. Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) was the most prevalent organism (37%), followed by S. aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Using the PCR method, 56 bacteria were detected. A. baumannii was the most prevalent (35.7%) organism. A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa were biofilm-producing. All Gram-negative isolates were colistin-sensitive, and most of the A. baumannii isolates were multidrug-resistant (MDR). MRSA was identified in 12 (80%) S. aureus isolates, and 91.6% of MRSA were SCCmec type III. The agr type III was the most predominant. The rep-PCR analysis showed seven different patterns in 20 A. baumannii, six patterns in 13 P. aeruginosa, and four patterns in 6 E. coli. Conclusion A. baumannii was more prevalent than S. aureus in ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), while S. aureus is a major pathogen in non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP), possibly due to the tendency of the former to aquatic environments. Based on the rep-PCR typing method, it was concluded that bacteria were transmitted from patients or healthcare workers among different wards. Colistin can be used as a treatment in Gram-negative MDR isolates.
