Abstract In this article, we compare the properties of two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that show similar source region characteristics but different evolutionary behaviors in the later phases. We discuss the two events in terms of their near-Sun characteristics, interplanetary evolution and geoeffectiveness. We carefully analyzed the initiation and propagation parameters of these events to establish the precise CME-interplanetary CME (ICME) connection and their near-Earth consequences. The first event is associated with poor geomagnetic storm disturbance index (Dst ≈-20 nT) while the second event is associated with an intense geomagnetic storm of DST ≈-119 nT. The configuration of the sunspots in the active regions and their evolution are observed by Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI). For source region imaging, we rely on data obtained from Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and Hα filtergrams from the Solar Tower Telescope at Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES). For both the CMEs, flux rope eruptions from the source region triggered flares of similar intensities (≈M1). At the solar source region of the eruptions,we observed a circular ribbon flare (CRF) for both cases, suggesting fan-spine magnetic configuration in the active region corona. The multi-channel SDO observations confirm that the eruptive flares and subsequent CMEs were intimately related to the filament eruption. Within the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronograph (LASCO) field of view (FOV) thetwo CMEs propagated with linear speeds of 671 and 631 km s−1, respectively. These CMEs were tracked up to the Earth by Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) instruments. We find that the source region evolution of CMEs, guided by the large-scale coronal magnetic field configuration, along with near-Sun propagation characteristics, such as CME-CME interactions, played important roles in deciding the evolution of CMEs in the interplanetary medium and subsequently their geoeffectiveness.

In this work, we present the positioning error analysis of the 12 May 2021 moderate geomagnetic storm. The storm happened during spring in the northern hemisphere (fall in the south). We selected 868 GNSS stations around the globe to study the ionospheric and the apparent position variations. We compared the day of the storm with the three previous days. The analysis shows the global impact of the storm. In the quiet days, 93% of the stations had 3D errors less than 10 cm, while during the storm, only 41% kept this level of accuracy. The higher impact was over the Up component. Although the stations have algorithms to correct ionospheric disturbances, the inaccuracies lasted for nine hours. The most severe effects on the positioning errors were noticed in the South American sector. More than 60% of the perturbed stations were located in this region. We also studied the effects produced by two other similar geomagnetic storms that occurred on 27 March 2017 and on 5 August 2019. The comparison of the storms shows that the effects on position inaccuracies are not directly deductible neither from the characteristics of geomagnetic storms nor from enhancement and/or variations of the ionospheric plasma.

We have studied and compared the effects of full and partial halo geomagnetic storms on the high latitude ionosphere. The study used the total electron content (TEC) data obtained from the global positioning system (GPS) to examine the level of response of high latitude ionosphere around Ny Alesund, Norway to full and partial halo geomagnetic storms of June 23rd 2015 and January 1st 2016 respectively. This study was carried out using a dual frequency ground based GNSS observations at high latitude (NYAL: 78.56oN, 11.52oE) ionospheric station in Norway. The vertical TEC (VTEC) was extracted from Receiver Independent Exchange (RINEX) formatted GPS-TEC data using the GOPI Software developed by Seemala Gopi. The GOPI software is a GNSS-TEC analysis program which uses ephemeris data and differential code biases (DCBs) in estimating slant TEC (STEC) prior to its conversion to VTEC. From the results, the responses of the high latitude before the storm days were more positive than on the storm days. Also the overall response of the high latitude to the full halo geomagnetic storm was more positive with more impact than that of the partial halo geomagnetic storm.

The ionospheric equivalent slab thickness (τ) is defined as the ratio of the total electron content (TEC) to the F2-layer peak electron density (NmF2), and it is a significant parameter representative of the ionosphere. In this paper, a comprehensive statistical analysis of the diurnal, seasonal, solar, and magnetic activity variations in the τ at Guam (144.86°E, 13.62°N, 5.54°N dip lat), which is located near the magnetic equator, is presented using the GPS-TEC and ionosonde NmF2 data during the years 2012–2017. It is found that, for geomagnetically quiet days, the τ reaches its maximum value in the noontime, and the peak value in winter and at the equinox are larger than that in summer. Moreover, there is a post-sunset peak observed in the winter and equinox, and the τ during the post-midnight period is smallest in equinox. The mainly diurnal and seasonal variation of τ can be explained within the framework of relative variation of TEC and NmF2 during different seasonal local time. The dependence of τ on the solar activity shows positive correlation during the daytime, and the opposite situation applies for the nighttime. Specifically, the disturbance index (DI), which can visually assess the relationship between instantaneous τ values and the median, is introduced in the paper to quantitatively describe the overall pattern of the geomagnetic storm effect on the τ variation. The results show that the geomagnetic storm seems to have positive effect on the τ during most of the storm-time period at Guam. An example, on the 1 June 2013, is also presented to analyze the physical mechanism. During the positive storms, the penetration electric field, along with storm time equator-ward neutral wind, tends to increase upward drift and uplift F region, causing the large increase in TEC, accompanied by a relatively small increase in NmF2. On the other hand, an enhanced equatorward wind tends to push more plasma, at low latitudes, into the topside ionosphere in the equatorial region, resulting in the TEC not undergoing severe depletion, as with NmF2, during the negative storms. The results would complement the analysis of τ behavior during quiet and disturbed conditions at equatorial latitudes in East Asia.

The article is focused on the approach based on the discrete mathematical analysis conception and continues a series of studies related to the application of the previously developed methodology to geophysical data analysis. The main idea of the study is the modification of earlier conceptions regarding the interpreter’s logic that allows introducing a multiscale approach and performing the time series analysis using the activity measure plots, implying the vertical scale. This approach was used to study the morphology of several intense geomagnetic storms at the final stages of the 23rd and 24th solar activity cycles. Geomagnetic observatory data and interplanetary magnetic field parameters as well as the solar wind flux speed and proton density were analyzed for each of the studied storms using the activity measures. The developed methods, applied to geomagnetic storm morphological analysis, displayed good results in revealing the decreases and increases in various durations and intensities during storms, detecting low-amplitude disturbances, and storm sudden commencement recognition. The results provide an opportunity to analyze any physical data using a unified scale and, in particular, to implement this approach to geomagnetic activity studies.

The term deviation frequency (fd) denotes the boundary between the variable part of the amplitude and phase scintillation spectrum and the part of uninformative noises. We suggested the concept of the “characteristic deviation frequency” during the observation period. The characteristic deviation frequency is defined as the most probable value of the deviation frequency under current local conditions. Our case study involved GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and SBAS data under quiet and weakly disturbed geomagnetic conditions (geomagnetic storm on 16 April 2021, Kpmax = 5, SYM-Hmin = −57 nT) at the mid-latitude GNSS station. Our results demonstrated that the deviation frequency for all signal components of GPS, GLONASS and Galileo varies within 15–22 Hz. The characteristic deviation frequency was 20 Hz for the mentioned GNSS signals. The SBAS differs from other systems: deviation frequency varies within 13–20 Hz. The characteristic deviation frequency is lower and equal to 18 Hz. We suggest the characteristic deviation frequency to determine the optimal sampling rate of the GNSS carrier phase data for the ionospheric studies. In turn, the deviation frequency can be considered as a promising index to estimate the boundary of non-variability of the ionosphere.
