A series of novel lightweight TaNbVTi-based refractory high entropy alloys (RHEA) were fabricated through ball-milling and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The reinforced phase of TiO precipitates were in-situ formed due to the introduction of Al2O3 ceramic particles. The RHEA with 15% Al2O3 exhibits a high compressive yield strength (1837 MPa) and a low density (7.75 g/cm3) with an adequate ductility retention. The yield strength and density are 32% higher and 15% lower, respectively, compared to the RHEA without Al2O3 addition. The specific yield strength (237 MPa cm3/g) of the RHEAs is much higher than that of other reported RHEAs, and is mainly ascribed to the introduction of high volume fraction of Al2O3 additives, resulting in solid solution strengthening and precipitation strengthening. Meanwhile, the ductile matrix is responsible for the good compressive plasticity.

In the present study, the addition of tin (Sn) to the pure Al system was done, and its effects on the morphology, density, and compressive yield strength of pure Al were analyzed systematically. In this context, the morphology of sintered Al revealed enhanced wettability and sintering response between Al particles with increased Sn content. Moreover, physical characteristics of sintered Al alloys demonstrated oxidation phenomenon (black color specimen) with the lowest Sn content of 1.5 weight percent (wt.%), in which a higher Sn content of 2 and 2.5 wt.% produced silver color specimens, implying a reduction in oxidation. Additionally, densification of sintered Al alloys was greatly promoted with increased Sn contents, suggesting effective wetting as confirmed by the previous morphological observations. Similarly, the compressive yield strength of sintered Al alloys improved with increased Sn content which might be due to the enhanced inter-particle contacts between Al particles and sufficient wetting by molten Sn. Based on the results obtained, the introduction of Sn powder at various contents improved the sintering response of pure Al powder by providing sufficient liquid-phase sintering. Therefore, the sintered Al alloys had enhanced the morphological, densification, physical characteristics, and compressive yield strength.

In the present work, Nbx-CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy films (HEAFs, 0 to 7.2 at.% Nb) were fabricated by radio frequency (RF) magnetron co-sputtering of CoCrFeMnNi alloy and Nb targets. The effects of Nb addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of HEAFs were systematically investigated. For Nb-free film (0 at.% Nb), the face-centered cubic (FCC) peaks were identified in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern. The addition of Nb resulted in a broadening of diffraction peaks, a decrease in peak intensity, and the vanishment of high-angle peaks. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images indicated the formation of nanotwins at low Nb concentrations, and a transition from a single phase FCC solid solution to an amorphous phase was observed with the increasing Nb concentration. The films were strengthened with an increase in Nb concentration. Specifically, the hardness characterized by nanoindentation increased from 6.5 to 8.1 GPa. The compressive yield strength and fracture strength measured from micropillar compression tests were improved from 1.08 GPs and 2.56 GPa to 2.70 GPa and 5.76 GPa, respectively, whereas the fracture strain decreased from >29.4% (no fracture) to 15.8%. Additionally, shear banding was observed in the presence of amorphous phase.

In this study, AZ91 magnesium-alloy-based metal matrix composites (MMCs) reinforced with 10 wt% of Al0.5CoCrFeNi2 high-entropy alloy (HEA) particles and SiC particles were prepared by a spark plasma sintering (SPS) process at 300 °C. The effects of reinforcements on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ91-based MMCs were studied. The results showed that AZ91–HEA composite consisted of α-Mg, Mg17Al12 and FCC phases. No interfacial reaction layer was observed between HEA particles and the Mg matrix. After adding HEA into AZ91, the compressive yield strength (C.Y.S) of the AZ91–HEA composite increased by 17% without degradation of failure strain. In addition, the increment in C.Y.S brought by HEA was comparable to that contributed by commonly used SiC reinforcement (15%). A relatively low porosity in the composite and enhanced interfacial bonding between the α-Mg matrix and HEA particles make HEA a potential reinforcement material in MMCs.

Niobium-alumina aggregate fractions with particle sizes up to 3150 µm were produced by crushing pre-synthesised fine-grained composites. Phase separation with niobium enrichment in the aggregate class 45–500 µm was revealed by XRD/Rietveld analysis. To reduce the amount of carbon-based impurities, no organic additives were used for the castable mixtures, which resulted in water demands of approximately 27 vol.% for the fine- and coarse-grained castables. As a consequence, open porosities of 18% and 30% were determined for the fine- and coarse-grained composites, respectively. Due to increased porosity, the modulus of rupture at room temperature decreased from 52 MPa for the fine-grained composite to 11 MPa for the coarse-grained one. However, even the compressive yield strength decreased from 49 MPa to 18 MPa at 1300 °C for the fine-grained to the coarse-grained composite, the latter showed still plasticity with a strain up to 5%. The electrical conductivity of fine-grained composite samples was in the range between 40 and 60 MMS/cm, which is fifteen magnitudes above the values of pure corundum.

This research work aims at investigating the influence of a fixed content of silicon nitride (Si3N4) and varied contents of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the physical and mechanical properties of Al-Si3N4-GNPs composites. The composites were fabricated by a microwave-assisted powder metallurgy route. The Si3N4 concentration was fixed at (5 wt.%) while the GNPs concentration was varied between (0 wt.%) to (1.5 wt.%) in the Al-Si3N4-GNPs. The structural analysis indicates the formation of phase pure materials with high crystallinity. The microstructural analysis confirmed the presence of the Si3N4 and GNPs showing enhanced agglomeration with the increasing amount of GNPs. Moreover, the surface roughness of the synthesized composites increases with an increasing amount of GNPs reaching its maximum value (RMS = 65.32 nm) at 1.5 wt.% of GNPs. The Al-Si3N4-GNPs composites exhibit improved microhardness and promising load-indentation behavior during nanoindentation when compared to pure aluminum (Al). Moreover, Al-Si3N4-GNPs composites demonstrate higher values of compressive yield strength (CYS) and ultimate compressive strength (UCS) when compared to pure Al despite showing a declining trend with an increasing amount of GNPs in the matrix. Finally, a shear mode of fracture is prevalent in Al-Si3N4-GNPs composites under compression loading.

In the present work, we investigated the possibility of introducing fine and densely distributed α-Al(MnFe)Si dispersoids into the microstructure of extruded Al-Mg-Si-Mn AA6082 alloys containing 0.5 and 1 wt % Mn through tailoring the processing route as well as their effects on room- and elevated-temperature strength and creep resistance. The results show that the fine dispersoids formed during low-temperature homogenization experienced less coarsening when subsequently extruded at 350 °C than when subjected to a more typical high-temperature extrusion at 500 °C. After aging, a significant strengthening effect was produced by β″ precipitates in all conditions studied. Fine dispersoids offered complimentary strengthening, further enhancing the room-temperature compressive yield strength by up to 72–77 MPa (≈28%) relative to the alloy with coarse dispersoids. During thermal exposure at 300 °C for 100 h, β″ precipitates transformed into undesirable β-Mg2Si, while thermally stable dispersoids provided the predominant elevated-temperature strengthening effect. Compared to the base case with coarse dispersoids, fine and densely distributed dispersoids with the new processing route more than doubled the yield strength at 300 °C. In addition, finer dispersoids obtained by extrusion at 350 °C improved the yield strength at 300 °C by 17% compared to that at 500 °C. The creep resistance at 300 °C was greatly improved by an order of magnitude from the coarse dispersoid condition to one containing fine and densely distributed dispersoids, highlighting the high efficacy of the new processing route in enhancing the elevated-temperature properties of extruded Al-Mg-Si-Mn alloys.

In this work, a new composite material with excellent dynamic impact resistance and outstanding quasi-static mechanical properties was synthesized. The composite material is composed of a polyurethane elastomer and a novel nano-polymer. The nano-polymer was composed of silane coupling agent-modified alumina microspheres and functionalized ionic liquids by double bond polymerization. The universal testing machine and split Hopkinson pressure bar were used to characterize the compression behavior, strength and energy absorption of the composite materials under static and dynamic conditions. Additionally, the comprehensive mechanical properties of polyurethane elastomer with different nano-polymer loadings (0.5–2.5 wt.%) were studied. The results show that whether it was static compression or dynamic impact, the polyurethane elastomer with 1% nano-polymer had the best performance. For the composite material with the best properties, its compressive yield strength under the static compression was about 61.13% higher than that of the pure polyurethane elastomer, and its energy absorption of dynamic impacts was also increased by about 15.53%. Moreover, the shape memory effect was very good (shape recovery is approximately 95%), and the microscopic damage degree was relatively small. This shows that the composite material with the best properties can withstand high compression loads and high-speed impacts. The developed composite material is a promising one for materials science and engineering, especially for protection against compression and impacts.

In order to improve the wear resistance of CoCrNi alloy, TiC was introduced into the alloy and wear-resistant CoCrNi/(TiC)x composites were designed. The effects of TiC contents on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear resistance of CoCrNi matrix were investigated, respectively. It was found that the TiC produced dissolution and precipitation process in CoCrNi alloy, and a large number of needled and blocky TiC particles were precipitated in the composites. The compressive yield strength of CoCrNi/(TiC)x composites increased with the increasing TiC content. Compared with the CoCrNi alloy, the yield strength of CoCrNi/(TiC)x composites increased from 108 to 1371 MPa, and the corresponding strengthening mechanism contributed to the second phase strengthening. The wear resistance of CoCrNi/(TiC)x composites was also greatly improved due to the strengthening of TiC. Compared with the CoCrNi alloy, the specific wear rate of CoCrNi/(TiC)1.0 alloy was reduced by about 77%. The wear resistance of CoCrNi/(TiC)x composites was enhanced with the increasing content of TiC addition.

Titanium (Ti) alloys are materials of interest in structural and chemical applications due to their low density, outstanding mechanical and chemical resistance properties. However, the mechanical properties still need to be enhanced to make them suitable as a replacement for Ni-based superalloys. There have been significant breakthroughs in the reinforcement of Ti alloy with a small weight percentage (wt.%) of ceramics. This work investigates the effect of TiN nanoparticles’ addition on the densification, phase transformation, microstructure, hardness, and compressive properties of Ti-7Al-1Mo ternary alloy. 3 wt.% of TiN nanoparticles was blended with Ti-7Al-1Mo powder, and the resulting admixed powder was consolidated via spark plasma sintering technique at 50 MPa pressure, 10 min holding time, and 1000 °C temperature. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry were used to characterise the microstructure and phase composition respectively. The microstructure of Ti-7Al-1Mo revealed a lamellar structure with alpha (α) phase and minor beta (β) phase with visible grain boundaries, while TiN reinforced Ti-7Al-1Mo composite microstructure shows a bimodal structure with reduction in the lamellar structure. Ti-7Al-1Mo ternary alloy has a hardness value of 352±17 HV0.1 and a compressive yield strength of 985±31 MPa. The composite shows an increment of 74 HV and 323 MPa in its hardness and compressive yield strength respectively in comparison to the ternary alloy.
