Construction and Deconstruction of Hegemonic Masculinity in The Arab of the Future 1: Youth in the Middle East (1978-1984) by Riad Sattouf

Through the analysis of the graphic novel L’Arabe du future 1. Une jeunesse au Moyen-Orient (1978-1985) by the Franco-Syrian cartoonist Riad Sattouf, this contribution aims to investigate the construction of hegemonic masculinity in Gaddafi’s post-colonial Libya and Hafez al Assad’s Syria. First, this study intends to track the stages of Riad’s journey towards the achievement of hegemonic masculinity. In this context, a special focus will be laid on the construction of the mother’s character through that of the father, thereby showing how the female character takes shape from the male perspective. Second and finally, it attempts to analyse how the author implements a deconstruction path of hegemonic masculinity by using certain rhetorical devices, namely irony, stereotype repetition and the adoption of his own perspective as a child.

Translation as a Paradigm of Intercultural Communication The Case of La Locandiera by Carlo Goldoni in Quebec

Marco Micone is among the most important French-speaking writers in Quebec. Through his works, he gave an important reflection on literature as a means of mediation and expression of intercultural communication. He also translated some classics of Italian literature. In our work, we intend to investigate how much the translation of Carlo Goldoni’s La Locandiera can become a paradigm through which to investigate the characteristics of intercultural communication. His Locandiera can be defined as a migrant translation, in the sense that, through it, its author expresses the complex approach to diversity and inclusion.

Imaginations and Speculative Writings: Reinvesting Post-Colonial Possibilities and Subjectivities in Kaie Kellough’s Dominoes at the Crossroads

Recent studies on speculative literature emphasise the narrative presence of postcolonial thinking that proliferates within the genre. It is the case in the collection Dominoes at the Crossroads (2020) by the African Canadian writer Kaie Kellough, which attempts to re-imagine and tell the story of the black diaspora in Montreal, other than under a colonial spectrum. The short stories use a variety of speculative strategies: whether it is reinvesting a marginalised figure of a classic Quebecois novel or imagining the setting of Montreal’s future in which marginalised populations own a majority of the properties. The analysis of these stories will allow us to show how speculative literature is fertile ground for postcolonial potentialities, by allowing us to project elsewhere. Since speculative literature is a broad genre whose definition is not circumscribed, we will see how reflecting on the alternative postcolonial imaginings through such narrative allows for a rewriting that makes it possible to go beyond the colonial paradigms.
