AbstractThe NASA Star and Exoplanet Database (NStED) is a general purpose stellar archive with the aim of providing support for NASA's planet finding and characterization goals, stellar astrophysics, and the planning of NASA and other space missions. There are two principal components of NStED: a database of (currently) 140,000 nearby stars and exoplanet-hosting stars, and an archive dedicated to high precision photometric surveys for transiting exoplanets. We present a summary of the NStED stellar database, functionality, tools, and user interface. NStED currently serves the following kinds of data for 140,000 stars (where available): coordinates, multiplicity, proper motion, parallax, spectral type, multiband photometry, radial velocity, metallicity, chromospheric and coronal activity index, and rotation velocity/period. Furthermore, the following derived quantities are given wherever possible: distance, effective temperature, mass, radius, luminosity, space motions, and physical/angular dimensions of habitable zone. Queries to NStED can be made using constraints on any combination of the above parameters. In addition, NStED provides tools to derive specific inferred quantities for the stars in the database, cross-referenced with available extra-solar planetary data for those host stars. AbstractThe concept of a Galactic Habitable Zone (GHZ) was introduced for the Milky Way galaxy a decade ago as an extension of the earlier concept of the Circumstellar Habitable Zone. In this work, we consider the extension of the concept of a GHZ to other types of galaxies by considering two elliptical galaxies as examples, M87 and M32. We argue that the defining feature of the GHZ is the probability of planet formation which has been assumed to depend on the metallicity. We have compared the metallicity distribution of nearby stars with the metallicity of stars with planets to document the correlation between metallicity and planet formation and to provide a comparison to other galaxies. Metallicity distribution, based on the [Fe/H] ratio to solar, of nearby stars peaks at [Fe/H]≈−0.2 dex, whereas the metallicity distribution of extrasolar planet host stars peaks at [Fe/H]≈+0.4 dex. We compare the metallicity distribution of extrasolar planet host stars with the metallicity distribution of the outer star clusters of M87 and M32. The metallicity distribution of stars in the outer regions of M87 peaks at [Fe/H]≈−0.2 dex and extends to [Fe/H]≈+0.4 dex, which seems favourable for planet formation. The metallicity distribution of stars in the outer regions of M32 peaks at [Fe/H]≈−0.2 dex and extends to a much lower [Fe/H]. Both elliptical galaxies met the criteria of a GHZ. In general, many galaxies should support habitable zones.

CARMENES is a spectrograph for radial velocity surveys of M dwarfs with the aim of detecting Earth-mass planets orbiting in the habitable zones of their host stars. To ensure an optimal use of the CARMENES guaranteed time observations, in this paper we investigate the correlation of activity and rotation for approximately 2200 M dwarfs, ranging in spectral type from M0.0 V to M9.0 V. We present new high-resolution spectroscopic observations with FEROS, CAFE, and HRS of approximately 500 M dwarfs. For each new observation, we determined its radial velocity and measured its Hα activity index and its rotation velocity. Additionally, we have multiple observations of many stars to investigate if there are any radial velocity variations due to multiplicity. The results of our survey confirm that early-M dwarfs are Hα inactive with low rotational velocities and that late-M dwarfs are Hα active with very high rotational velocities. The results of this high-resolution analysis comprise the most extensive catalogue of rotation and activity in M dwarfs currently available.

There are two principal components of NStED: a database of (currently) 140,000 nearby stars and exoplanet-hosting stars, and an archive dedicated to high-precision photometric surveys for transiting exoplanets. We present a summary of the latter component: the NStED Exoplanet Transit Survey Service (NStED-ETSS), along with its content, functionality, tools, and user interface. NStED-ETSS currently serves data from the TrES Survey of the Kepler Field as well as dedicated photometric surveys of four stellar clusters. NStED-ETSS aims to serve both the surveys and the broader astronomical community by archiving these data and making them available in a homogeneous format. Examples of usability of ETSS include investigation of any time-variable phenomena in data sets not studied by the original survey team, application of different techniques or algorithms for planet transit detections, combination of data from different surveys for given objects, statistical studies, etc. NStED-ETSS can be accessed at http://nsted.ipac.caltech.edu.

ABSTRACT The spectral energy distributions of some nearby stars show mid-infrared (IR) excesses from warm habitable zone dust, known as exozodiacal dust. This dust may originate in collisions in a planetesimal belt before being dragged inwards. This paper presents an analytical model for the size distribution of particles at different radial locations in such a scenario, considering evolution due to destructive collisions and Poynting–Robertson (P–R) drag. Results from more accurate but computationally expensive numerical simulations of this process are used to validate the model and fit its free parameters. The model predicts 11 μm excesses (R11) for discs with a range of dust masses and planetesimal belt radii using realistic grain properties. We show that P–R drag should produce exozodiacal dust levels detectable with the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer (LBTI) ($R_{11} \gt 0.1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) in systems with known outer belts; non-detection may indicate dust depletion, e.g. by an intervening planet. We also find that LBTI could detect exozodiacal dust dragged in from a belt too faint to detect at far-IR wavelengths, with fractional luminosity f ∼ 10−7 and radius ∼10–80 au. Application to systems observed with LBTI shows that P–R drag can likely explain most (5/9) of the exozodiacal dust detections in systems with known outer belts; two systems (β Uma and η Corvi) with bright exozodi may be due to exocomets. We suggest that the three systems with exozodiacal dust detections but no known belt may have cold planetesimal belts too faint to be detectable in the far-IR. Even systems without outer belt detections could have exozodiacal dust levels $R_{11} \gt 0.04{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ which are problematic for exo-Earth imaging.

Analysis of contact points between wheel and rail during the wheel climb is of interest to railroad application engineers. In this study the climb maneuver of a wheelset is modeled in a general purpose multi-body system computer program. This model then is used to generate the contact data for a climbing wheelset. A graphical user interface is developed which uses this contact data and generates several contact points charts. In developing the graphical user interface, mouse and keyboard events as well as other controls are used to make the interface interactive and intuitive.

The design and implementation of a programming environment including an editor, a debugger and an interpreter engine for Lograph, a general-purpose visual logic programming language, is discussed. The rationale for user-interface design decisions is presented, the goal of which is to increase cognitive support for the creation, exploration and debugging of Lograph programs. The design of the interpreter engine allows for animation of execution in the debugger. The engine takes full advantage of an efficient implementation of Prolog, and operates on a Prolog translation of Lograph programs and queries. The translated Lograph programs are probed with instrumentation code at appropriate places so that applications of Lograph rules are reported to the visual interface of the Lograph debugger as a side effect of the execution of a program.

Against for a series of problems with the currently existing of bad modifiability and reusability for the traditional user interface development method, first propose a general-purpose interface automatically generated model--GIAGM, including interface configuration, interface customization, interface generating, the interface control and interface management mechanism, further put forward a interface interaction method based on message control. Research work to achieve an XML-based general-purpose interface automatically generated system. The application of the system not only allows the software development easier and faster, but also easy to maintain. Finally, the instance is introduced for the interface automatically generated system has good scalability and customization capabilities, can reduce the complexity of the interface development, improve the efficiency of the development.

This paper centers on the software reuses of Automatic Test Systems (ATS) and the integration of test and diagnosis to reduce maintenance costs. Based on the research into the basic framework, data services, packages and definition of interfaces, we present an integrated software platform for test and diagnosis system. The platform achieves the separation between the user interface and test logic, the combination of fault modeling and diagnostic reasoning, and the integration of test and diagnosis.
