The state of the issue of the relevance and efficiency of the technology of using liquefied natural gas as a partial replacement of diesel fuel in mining vehicles is considered. It is argued that this technology does not require complex and time-consuming re-engineering of internal com- bustion engines, which makes it economically feasible. It is noted that liq- uefied natural gas seems to be the most promising alternative to petroleum motor fuels in heavy-duty mining dump trucks. The use of liquefied natu- ral gas as a motor fuel reduces the environmental burden; increases the energy efficiency of the rock mass hauling process and reduces fuel costs. It is said that developments aimed at substantiating and choosing design and layout solutions for the placement and arrangement of cryogenic equipment on mining vehicles are relevant. The new method for installing cryogenic fuel tanks on the deck of the BelAZ 7513 series mining dump truck with a payload capacity of 130 tons is described in detail. Layout so- lutions for the modernization of the deck of the BelAZ 7513 series dump truck allowing placing additional cryogenic equipment on its board are presented. The data presented indicate that the successful implementation of the proposed method is confirmed by the project on equipping the BelAZ 75131 mining dump truck with cryogenic onboard fuel systems, implemented in practice.

Research aim is to analyze the prospects for increasing the efficiency of heavy-duty mining dump trucks operation through the use of natural gas as the main energy carrier. Research methodology included bench tests of a gas piston engine (GPE) KAMAZ mod. 820.60-260 with a capacity of 191 kW and the construction of forecast values of GPE parameters for the BELAZ-75319 mining dump truck with a load capacity of 240 tons. Results. A mathematical model and technique have been developed that allows predicting the main parameters of a gas piston engine and optimizing its economic and environmental characteristics. The use of natural gas as a motor fuel, with an unchanged engine design, leads to a decrease in its power. Currently, gas modifications are being created on the basis of existing diesel engines, and it is not always possible to implement any design measures at this stage. To realize all the capabilities of a gas engine, it should initially be designed for gas motor fuel. This technique is based on the experimental data of low-power gas piston engines and can be used for high-power gas engines studies intended for installation on mining dump trucks. Conclusions. Increasing the efficiency of mining dump trucks in the near future is possible through the use of natural gas as the main energy carrier. The use of natural gas as a motor fuel allows to increase the life of the engine, reduce the noise level and toxicity of exhaust gases, and reduce fuel costs.

The state-of-the-art of the issue of the efficiency and relevance of the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a motor fuel in the operation of dump trucks is considered. An analysis of the benefits of using LNG as a motor fuel is given. It is noted that, LNG seems to be the most promising alternative to oil types of motor fuel in the segment of open-pit truck haulage. It is affirmed that in Russia, in Kuzbass, the group of companies successfully implemented for the first time an integrated project for the production of LNG and its consumption in relation to BelAZ dump trucks. Data on the relevance and the need to develop technical requirements for on-board cryogenic fuel systems of mine dump trucks are given. Data on the developed groups of technical requirements for on-board cryogenic fuel systems of BelAZ dump trucks are given. It is said that the developed technical requirements made it possible to solve a number of tasks related to the development of circuit and design solutions for equipping BelAZ dump trucks with cryogenic systems. It is argued that the developed technical requirements will contribute to the further development of domestic projects for the production and consumption of liquefied natural gas.

The state-of-the-art of efficiency and relevance of the use of liquefied natural gas as a motor fuel for truck operation is considered. A brief analysis of economic and environmental benefits of using liquefied natural gas as a motor fuel is conducted. It is noted that liquefied natural gas seems to be the most promising alternative to oil fuels for high-payload-capacity haul trucks. It is affirmed that for the first time in Russia, in Kuzbass, OOO “Siber-Energo” successfully implemented an integrated project for the production of liquefied natural gas and its consumption in relation to high-payload-capacity BelAZ haul trucks. The data on the assessment of the energy intensity of the process of rock mass hauling by high-payload-capacity BelAZ 75131 haul trucks equipped with on-board cryogenic fuel system are presented. The data show that the energy intensity of the process of rock mass hauling by dual-fuel (gas-diesel) haul trucks is much less than that of diesel-powered haul trucks. It is said that, according to the energy criterion for evaluating the operation, it is more efficient to use haul trucks running on gas-diesel mixture.

The prospects for the use of natural gas as a motor fuel are considered. The state-run program for the development of natural-gas-fuelled vehicles will entail an increase in the share of transport operating on natural gas. The data on the thermal performance of natural gas from various fields, the volumetric heat values of the stoichiometric mixture of which is almost the same, are given. The analysis of the operation of gas-diesel-fuelled BelAZ dump truck, which burns liquefied natural gas, is conducted. The schematic diagram for engine power supply with liquefied natural gas is given. The calculation of the liquefied natural gas supply system with the replacement of diesel fuel by 33% was made. As a result of the calculation, the diameter of a fuel manifold after injectors, which provides the recommended gas velocity through a manifold, was determined. The instrumentation system for controlling the amount of supplied natural gas is proposed. The complex allows obtaining data on the instantaneous gas flow rate and the total flow rate over a period of time. A pulsation damper used as part of the system allowed reducing gas pulsation in fuel manifolds after injectors, to create conditions for the use of orifice plate flow meters, and ensured the uniform supply of natural gas to both banks of cylinders, which favourably affected the engine.

Natural gas (NG) is one of the most promising alternative fuels of diesel and petrol because of its economics and environmental protection. Generally the NG engine share the similar structure profile with diesel or petrol engine but the combustion characteristics of NG is varied from the fuels, so the investigation of NG engine combustion process receive more attentions from the researchers. In this paper, a zero-dimensional model on the basis of Vibe function is built in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. The model provides the prediction of combustion process in natural gas engines, which has been verified by the experimental data in the NG test bed. Furthermore, the influence of NG composition on engine performance is investigated, in which the in-cylinder maximum pressure and temperature and mean indicated pressure are compared using different type NG. It is shown in the results that NG with higher composition of methane results in lower maximum temperature and mean indicated pressure as well as higher maximum pressure.

AbstractThe successful implementation of smart metering in the European Union (hereinafter – EU) depends on criteria that are mostly determined by the Member States themselves. These criteria cover the regulatory framework and legislation necessary for the establishment and functioning of the smart metering system, the fulfilment of technical and commercial conditions, as well as the security of data collection, archiving and use. The introduction of the smart metering in different Member States has started at different times. In Latvia, its reference point was 2004, when the goal was set to maximise the use of telemetry in the natural gas metering. Currently, in the Latvian natural gas distribution system about 85 % of all consumption data are automatically processed. One of the most important components of the smart natural gas metering is natural gas commercial metering devices (hereinafter – smart meters). They differ in both the principle and type of operation. Depending on the technology used, the metering range changes, and thus the accuracy of the measurements. The article addresses some issues of further successful implementation of smart metering in the Latvian natural gas sector, as well as the measurement accuracy for smart natural gas meters.
