The present study was conducted to examine the developmental patterning of food preferences in a large sample of British schoolchildren and to investigate possible gender differences. Using a cross-sectional survey design, the study was carried out in three primary and three secondary schools in West London, UK. A total of 1291 children aged from 4 to 16 years completed a 115-item food preference questionnaire in class time, supervised by class teachers and assistants. Children indicated whether they had ever tried each item and, if so, how much they liked it. We observed age-related increases in the number of foods tried (P<0·001), liked (P<0·005) and disliked (P<0·05). Controlling for the number of foods tried rendered the increase in dislikes non-significant and reversed the age effect on the number liked. Girls liked fruit (P<0·05) and vegetables (P<0·001) more than boys did; boys liked fatty and sugary foods (P<0·005), meat (P<0·001), processed meat products (P<0·001) and eggs (P<0·05) more than girls did. Some age differences were apparent in liking for categories of food, although the effects were not linear. Across ages and genders, children rated fatty and sugary foods most highly, although ratings for fruit were also high. Children's food preferences overall are not consistent with a healthy diet. Interventions should focus on increasing the familiarity, availability and accessibility of healthy foods and should be mindful of the need to target messages appropriately for boys who have less healthful food preferences than girls at all ages.

The study assessed how organizational culture affects employee work engagement in the insurance industries in Ghana. A cross sectional survey design was used to purposively sample one hundred and sixty-one (161) employees from two leading insurance companies ambidextrously. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Independent t-test were the statistical tools used to test the three hypotheses of the study. The results of the study revealed that, there is a positive significant relationship between organizational culture and employee work engagement. Again it was established that managers are more likely to be engaged on their job than non-managers and gender has no significant influence on engagement levels. The study therefore concluded that, to increase employee work engagement, organizations must adopt a favorable culture. Therefore we recommend that organizations should maintain and sustain favorable culture in order to increase the level of employees work engagement.

Abstract Background - Two recent studies looked at the career choice of residents in obstetrics & gynecology. It seemed useful to us to broaden this questioning to other specialties, by proposing a study to all residents in the same Faculty. The objective of our study was to describe residents career aspirations and possible barriers according to gender.Methods – Declarative cross-sectional survey, using questionnaires sent by email to the specialty residents of the Faculty of Medicine of Lille (France). An analysis by specialty group (i.e. medicine, surgery, obstetrics & gynecology and anesthesia & resuscitation) and a comparison of the results according to gender were performed. Results – Of the 1,384 specialty residents currently in training, 462 answered the questionnaires (33.38%), among whom 289 women and 173 men (average age = 27.08 years +/- 0.091). 17 women (5.9%) were currently considering a university hospital career versus 37 men (21.4%) (p = 0.001). Gender analysis made it possible to identify obstacles to engaging in a university career: lacking female model, more frequent doubting in the ability to lead this type of career among women (61.6%) than men (35.3%) (p <0.001), and gender discrimination felt in the workplace for 51.6% of women (versus 7.5% of men, p <0.001). Subgroup analysis showed specificities related to each specialty. Conclusions – Few residents plan to embark upon a university hospital career, let alone female residents. There are specificities specific to each specialty and marked gender differences regarding career aspirations. Many obstacles have been identified as obstacles to access to university hospital positions for women. It is important to develop strategies to remove these barriers and enable women to pursue such university careers. Trial registration – Not applicable (no intervention)

In this cross-sectional survey study, we investigated gambling characteristics (“quick” money syndrome, frequency of gambling, preferred gambling products and platforms) and demographic (age and gender) differences as determinants of attitudes towards gambling among youths in Lagos. We used a purposive snowball technique to recruit 179 respondents in Lagos (men: n = 165 [83.8% of participants]; women: n = 32) with a history of gambling activities. Gambling characteristics, demographics, and attitudes towards gambling were measured by using a gambling characteristics profile, the bio-data of the respondents, and the short form of the Attitudes Towards Gambling Scale (ATGS-8), respectively. The results showed that respondents believed that to make quick money, one needed to gamble once a week or more (67%), wager on sports betting (37.1%), and bet online (65.5%). The mean ATGS-8 composite score (28.2 ± 4.75) indicated overall positive attitudes among respondents. Independent sample t tests showed a significant difference between older (24–34 years) and younger (18–23 years) youths in their attitudes towards gambling (t = -2.30, p < .05) but no significant gender differences (t = 0.06, p > .05). One-way analysis of variance revealed a significant difference in attitudes towards gambling based on gambling frequency, F(3, 196) = 6.86, p < .05, with those who gamble monthly having the highest score. Participants displayed the belief that the easiest way to quick money is to gamble at least once weekly and to bet online. Younger participants and those who gamble at least once a month reported more positive attitudes towards gambling. Youths need to be made aware that gambling is not a viable source of income.RésuméCette étude s’est penchée sur les caractéristiques de la pratique des jeux de hasard (syndrome de l’argent « facile », fréquence du jeu, produits et plateformes des jeux de choix) et les différences démographiques (âge et genre) en tant que déterminants des attitudes envers le jeu chez les jeunes au Lagos. Un échantillon de 197 joueurs (hommes; n = 165 [83,8% des participants], femmes ; n = 32) a été choisi à dessein à l’aide d’un sondage en boule de neige aux endroits suivants :  guichets de paris sportifs, kiosques de loterie, centres de visualisation de matches de football, centres commerciaux, centres de détente et parcs de sport automobile à Lagos, au Nigeria. Les attitudes ont été mesurées à l’aide de l’échelle des attitudes envers les jeux de hasard (ATGS-8). Les résultats montraient que les répondants croyaient que pour gagner de l’argent facilement aux jeux de hasard, il fallait jouer au moins une fois par semaine (67 %), faire des paris sportifs (37,1%), et parier en ligne (65,5 %). Le pointage combiné moyen de l’ATGS-8 (2,2 ± 4,75) indiquait dans l’ensemble des attitudes positives chez les répondants; un test t sur échantillon indépendant a révélé une différence importante dans l’attitude envers les jeux de hasard entre les joueurs jeunes plus âgés et plus jeunes (t =-2.30, p < 0.05), mais aucune différence significative entre les genres (t = 0.06, p > 0.05). L’analyse de variance à un critère de classification révèle des différences importantes dans les attitudes envers les jeux de hasard en fonction de la fréquence de la pratique de ces jeux (F (3 196) =6.86, p < 0.05); et ceux qui jouent tous les mois obtenaient le pointage le plus élevé. Les participants démontraient irréfutablement la conviction selon laquelle le moyen le plus facile de faire de l’argent facile est de jouer à des jeux de hasard au moins une fois par semaine et de parier en ligne. Les participants plus jeunes et ceux qui s’adonnent aux jeux de hasard au moins une fois par mois faisaient preuve d’attitudes plus positives à l’égard des jeux de hasard. Il faut faire comprendre aux jeunes que la pratique des jeux de hasard ne représente pas une source de revenu viable.

Gamification, which is defined as the use of game design elements in non-game contexts, is put forward as a solution to low motivation and is suggested for the creation of a sustainable learning ecology in open and distance learning (ODL). The overall purpose of the present study was to examine the distribution of the Hexad gamification user types and the correlations of gamification experience, game mode, and gender with the user types’ scores within the context of an ODL system. The researchers adapted quantitative cross-sectional survey design to seek answers in this study. The Hexad user types of distance learners were determined based on the online “Gamification User Types Hexad Scale.” Findings revealed that the most common user types in the ODL environment were Philanthropists, Achievers, and Free Spirits, followed by Socializers and Players with a lower mean, while the least common user type was Disruptors. Women tended to score higher than men on the Disruptor user type. Achievers, Socializers, Philanthropists, and Players preferred multiplayer game modes, while the game mode had little influence on Free Spirits and Disruptors. Regarding the gamification experience, Players and Free Spirits seemed to have more experience of gamified applications. This study provides insights to learning designers in developing gamified ODL systems to engage the different Hexad user types.

Elders in rural areas of developing countries are particularly vulnerable to cognitive impairment and gender disparities are notable. Yet, evidence related to gender differences in cognitive impairment in these settings is scarce. This study examined gender differences in cognitive impairment among elderly people aged 65 and above in rural China. A multi-site cross-sectional survey was conducted. In total, 550 males and 700 females were recruited. The Chinese version of the Mini-Mental Status Examination was applied for cognitive impairment screening. Demographic information, lifestyle factors, psychosocial factors, and health-related information were assessed. The prevalence of cognitive impairment was 40.0%in males and 45.1% in females, respectively. Females showed significant higher prevalence after age 75 (62.7% vs. 45.4%, p < 0.005). Older age, hearing impairment, and activities of daily living dependence were common factors associated with cognitive impairment in both females and males. For males, living in a neighborhood with poor social interactions and diabetes were risk factors, while tea consumption was a protective factor. For females, vision impairment and illiteracy were additional risk factors. Individualized interventions and standardized measurements of cognitive function should be developed to suit older populations living in rural and less-developed areas, through collective efforts involving all stakeholders and multidisciplinary teamwork.

This study examined the role of computer self-efficacy and gender in computer-based test (CBT) anxiety among a sample of Nigerian undergraduates. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted. Using a purposive sampling technique, 241 undergraduates (110 males and 131 females) were selected from a public university in Ondo State, Nigeria. Their ages ranged from 17 to 29 years with a Mean of 23.10 (SD = 5.10). Standardized questionnaires were used for data collection. Two hypotheses were tested using simple linear regression and independent t-test. The results showed that undergraduates who had higher level of computer self-efficacy were less likely to experience CBT anxiety (β = -.41; p < .01). Female undergraduates (M = 65.74) reported higher level of CBT anxiety than their male counterparts (M = 52.43). Therefore, to reduce computer-based test anxiety among undergraduates, we suggest that university managements should organize psychological training that would help enhance undergraduates (especially female undergraduates) computer self-efficacy.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to test the cognitive construct of optimism (positive future outcome expectancies) and the age-gender differences in Indian sample. Design/methodology/approach The sample consists of 363 older, middle-aged and younger male and female employees. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey based research design. Findings Results revealed that middle-aged employees have high levels of optimism as compared to the old age and younger employees. Further, the males reflected high optimism levels in comparison to female employees in middle and old aged adult employees, whereas females have higher optimism level in younger age in Indian select organisations. Research limitations/implications The study suggests that the continuous changes in the lifespan lead to changes in one’s attitude and hence results in behavioural changes. The research indicates that optimism should be cultivated in the individuals by providing training and development to promote the competence and skill-building events which would help in enhancing the productivity resulting in better understanding of the scenario at workplace. Originality/value The work supplements the existing literature on positive attitude or outcome expectancies by adding to the lifespan development theory.

Usada Taru Pramana is a record of hundreds medicinal plants. Researcher is interested to know the knowledge level of Pemogan Villager about Usada Taru Pramana and its influence on the utilization behavior and conservation of herbal medicine. Data were collected using a valid and reliable structured questionnaire with a cross-sectional survey design. According to Spearman's test result from total 150 samples, Pemogan Villager knowledge about Usada Taru Pramana is not correlated with the utilization behavior and conservation of herbal medicine (P value=0,280 and r=0,089). There were no significant differences between the both variables with respondents' education level, age and gender. The results showed that the factor which influenced the studied variables is very complex. There were "aja wera" belief in Balinese society, which means that the general public is prohibited from learning directly from the Lontar. Pemogan Villager also hampered by the scarcity of land and medicinal plants around them.

Background: The hawking of wares by children has been a serious issue confronting the Nigerian society. Children hawk in some of the most horrible conditions conceivable, where they face a serious risk of injury, chronic illness, kidnapping, rape or death. Objective: The focus of this study was to assess the perceived effects of street hawking on the well-being of children in Anyigba, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State. Methods: The population of this study consists of parents of the street hawkers in Anyigba while cross-sectional survey design was used through the purposive sampling technique to choose the sample size of one hundred and sixty-two (162) respondents. The validated structured questionnaire and In-Depth Interviews (IDIs) served as the instruments for the data collection respectively. The hypotheses were tested using Chi-Square at a predetermined 0.05 level of significance. The quantitative data were analysed with the aid of the SPSS (version 20). Results: The results indicated among others that street hawking had significant social implications and physical consequences on children's moral behaviour as well as health status in the study area. Conclusion: The study, therefore, concluded that the government of Kogi State should carry out an enlightenment campaign through the media and religious institutions on the negative consequences of street hawking are recommended as panacea. Also, the child right act instrument and its implementation should be strengthened in order to curb street hawking in the study area.
