Fragmentary organism VS. oRGANIC FRAGMENT: Reconceptualizing aesthetic principles in kleist’s der zerbrochne krug and penthesilea

Abstract Starting from the undeniable inadequacy of (poetic) language, which, as Kleist pointed out, can only provide ‘torn fragments’ without allowing fully accomplished communication, this article examines how such fragmentariness creates distinct units of meaning as part of the author’s intentionality. Kleist programmatically called his drama Penthesilea, which was published in his journal Phöbus in 1808, an ‘organic fragment’. This paradoxical term highlights an inherent contradiction: namely the unity between the fragmentary and the organic, the latter presupposing, after all, an existing whole. Whilst the author termed his drama in this case a fragment, which pretends to be organic, the opposite occurs with his comedy Der zerbrochne Krug. Here, Kleist generates a complete whole from linguistic fragmentations or, to put it provocatively, a fragmentary organism. This intricate relationship is the subject of the following philological and thematic analysis.

Levantine immigration to Chile started during the last quarter of the 19th century. This immigration, almost exclusively male at the outset, changed at the beginning of the 20th century when women started following their fathers, brothers, and husbands to the New World. Defining the role and status of the Arab woman within her community in Chile has never before been tackled in a detailed study. This article attempts to broach the subject by looking at Arabic newspapers published in Chile between 1912 and the end of the 1920s. A thematic analysis of articles dealing with the question of women or written by women, appearing in publications such as Al-Murshid, Asch-Schabibat, Al-Watan, and Oriente, will be discussed.

Squirting, or female ejaculation, is the expulsion of fluid during sexual stimulation. The limited scientific literature has focused primarily on clarifying what this fluid contains, while women’s own voices on the experience have received scant attention. This study explores 28 women’s experiences and applies a thematic analysis. The sensation of squirting is individual and sometimes conflicting. Descriptions range from considering it amazing, a superpower and feminist statement to an unpleasant and/or shameful event. Across the board, there is a wish for nuanced information and for the current taboo and mystification surrounding the subject to be broken.

The paper can be seen as a response to the 1994 challenge formulated by A.I. Abramov in his work Kant in Russian Spiritual-Academic Philosophy, where he emphasizes the need to examine reflections on Immanuel Kant’s legacy in various Russian academic and intellectual environments. This study thus joins the existing ones that have covered the dominant tendencies of Russian Kantian studies in such important environments as, for example, academies or journals as Kant Studien, Problems of Philosophy and Psychology and their editorial boards. The paper focuses on one of the journal environments – Problems of Philosophy – and it responds to the status quo, i.e., to the fact that this important and still living creative environment has not been the subject of a systematic review in the context of the study of Kant’s creative legacy. The paper is not an overview or chronological summary of works but it uses the approach of subject-thematic analysis to reveal the main pillars of the interest in Kant. The author identifies thematic units, areas, and contexts that become the subject matter of critical and creative interest of the authors in this philosophical journal and within them he tries to bring a closer look at particular works that deserve further evaluation.

Armah’s The Beautyful Ones are not yet Born is a novel known for its extensive portrayal of the ills and anomalies in the Ghanaian society right after independence. The majority of studies on the novel have overwhelmingly concluded that corruption is the preoccupation of the text. This view appears skewed in many respects. This paper argues that the corpus assisted approach can contribute methodologies to support objective investigation of the subject matters of the text. This study, adopting the corpus-assisted approach in a mix of numerical data and qualitative description of Armah’s The Beautyful Ones are not yet Born, used frequencies of the occurrence of pejorative terms in the text to determine the dominant subject matters in the novel. The approach reveals that “rot” and “decay” are the most dominant motifs used, followed by “filth”, “corruption”, and “bribery”. It suggests that clusters, i.e., recurrence of words, characters’ association with the words, and context of use serve as textual cues in thematic exploration. The approach aids in revealing that the real intent of The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born is that the total breakdown of the society rests on seemingly insignificant characters. The paper has implications for methodological approaches to thematic analysis of literary texts, particularly, the novel.

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted traditional resident recruitment practices, requiring virtual interviews and new forms of outreach. Social media, such as Twitter, is one tool programs can use to connect with applicants. This study sought to assess changes in Twitter use during the COVID-19 pandemic among general surgery programs. Methods Twitter and residency program websites were queried for public Twitter accounts related to general surgery residency programs. Publicly available tweets for available accounts were reviewed for all posts for the period March 15, 2019-November 25, 2020. Thematic analysis of each tweet was performed, and engagement was determined by likes and retweets on each tweet. Results The number of programs with active Twitter accounts increased after the onset of COVID-19 pandemic, as did the number of tweets, likes-, and retweets-per-tweet. There was a significant increase in the number of tweets regarding resident promotion, program promotion, and virtual event promotion. Tweets received more likes-per-tweet if the subject was program promotion and resident promotion than tweets regarding virtual events. All results were statistically significant ( P < .05). Discussion Twitter use and engagement with residency programs have increased significantly since pandemic onset. Engagement is highest for tweets regarding program and resident promotion as measured by likes-per-tweet and highest for program promotion and virtual events as measured by retweets-per-tweet. Given the nearly nationwide increase in Twitter engagement after pandemic onset, programs should consider the impact of Twitter as a means of communication with applicants and program branding.

The current trends in the development of the Ukrainian and world society indicate the need to develop a unified strategy of national information borders protection. The work of the Soviet and German propaganda schools is the basis for the formation of the concept of information protection at different levels of society: from media policy to the development of information coverage and development the main vector in public policy. Today Ukraine is in a state of hybrid warfare and should not only protect its own information space, so the study of the peculiarities of agenda-setting by Pro-German periodical editions on the territory of Ukraine in 1943, when Ukraine was in a state of war, is relevant today. The subject of the study is the features of the agenda by pro-German printed periodical editions in the territory of Ukraine during 1943 (“Bulletin of Azov”, “Bobrynetsky Voice”, “Bug” and “Renaissance”). The purpose of the study was to analyze the peculiarities of the agenda formation in the 1943 by Pro-German printed periodical editions. The research methods are thematic analysis and content analysis. Results. To form a system of the audience’s necessary reactions to certain facts, events, phenomena, analyzed pro-German publications published in Ukraine in 1943, formulated a clear agenda, where the most important (central) role was of reports about the achievements of German troops, and about the economic and cultural development of Germany. The overall narrative was created on the basis of contrast, which allowed not just to actively show the advantages of Germany, but to emphasize on the shortcomings of the administrative activities of the USSR as much as possible. In addition to criticizing the actions of the Soviet authorities, German propaganda used the technique of approaching information in time and space, explaining to the audience that working in Germany is a way to gain new experience, to support the development of Ukrainian culture – a priority for the German leadership, etc. The agenda catered to negativization of the image of the Jews as an ethnicity.

Learning English is very closely related to learning western culture, which might contrast with Islamic values, the dominant religion in Indonesia. This study finds merit in finding out the implementation of Islamic values in teaching English at an Integrated Islamic school in Indonesia, where the school chosen curriculum mandated that the subject be integrated with Islamic values since all the students are Muslim. This case study took place at an Integrated Islamic School, and the data were collected through interviewing seven English teachers and conducting a thematic analysis on their lesson plans. All the teachers admitted that integrating Islamic values in the English lesson was essential. Still, the thematic analysis showed that their perceptions about the importance of integrating Islamic values in English learning were not firmly in line with the implementation in the teaching and learning process. The teachers' lesson plans (RPP) did not depict substantial integration of Islamic values. This study recommends the practical ways of integrating Islamic that could improve teachers' understanding of Islamic values in English learning, additionally pointing out a need to develop the curriculum and teaching materials that incorporate Islamic values.

The relationship between artwork and mental health has been the subject of various research endeavours. Whilst artwork has been long used as a means of emotional expression, it is also a method of raising mental health awareness. In this study, an art collection was presented to depict the challenges faced by many individuals living with a mental illness. Through a series of open-ended questions, twenty-nine participants were requested to give a title to each piece and to describe the perceived message and emotions related to each painting. The thematic analysis process of the participants’ descriptions led to the identification of three themes, namely those of Darkness, Solitude and Recovery. Whilst congruence was often observed between the participants themselves and between the viewers and the artist, discrepancies were also noted. Artwork can be an important medium in addressing stigma and in guiding reflections on mental health topics.

Resilience was a dynamic process that adapts positively to the difficulties it has. This term was often used by researchers in cancer patients. Controversy often occurs in its conception and little is known by patients in the use of the term resilience in their lives. The subject of this paper was cancer patients. The literature review was conducted by examining qualitative studies that discuss the use of terms in cancer patients and the use of themes used in terms of resilience. A systematic review of reviews through SCOPUS, MEDLINE, Psyc INFO and CINAHL reviewed from 2000 to 2017. Thematic analysis was used to encode themes in the studio and produce analytical themes, and resolution resolutions in the studio. After being invited to 573 citations, there were only 32 suitable studies. Four categories emerged, including coping strategies, social support, spirituality, and growth. The conclusion is no use of the term resilience in cancer patients, but cancer patients more often use other terms with the same meaning as resilience. Cancer patients rarely use the term direct resilience, but more often use terms such as coping strategies, social support, growth, and spiritual as terms related to resilience. Keywords: resilience; cancer patients
