We compute the image of any choice of complex conjugation on the Galois representations associated to regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations and to torsion classes in the cohomology of locally symmetric spaces for $\text{GL}_{n}$ over a totally real field $F$.

Let $F$ be a totally real field, and $v$ a place of $F$ dividing an odd prime $p$. We study the weight part of Serre’s conjecture for continuous totally odd representations $\overline{{\it\rho}}:G_{F}\rightarrow \text{GL}_{2}(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_{p})$ that are reducible locally at $v$. Let $W$ be the set of predicted Serre weights for the semisimplification of $\overline{{\it\rho}}|_{G_{F_{v}}}$. We prove that, when $\overline{{\it\rho}}|_{G_{F_{v}}}$ is generic, the Serre weights in $W$ for which $\overline{{\it\rho}}$ is modular are exactly the ones that are predicted (assuming that $\overline{{\it\rho}}$ is modular). We also determine precisely which subsets of $W$ arise as predicted weights when $\overline{{\it\rho}}|_{G_{F_{v}}}$ varies with fixed generic semisimplification.

AbstractLet K be a CM number field and GK its absolute Galois group. A representation of GK is said to be polarized if it is isomorphic to the contragredient of its outer complex conjugate, up to a twist by a power of the cyclotomic character. Absolutely irreducible polarized representations of GK have a sign ±1, generalizing the fact that a self-dual absolutely irreducible representation is either symplectic or orthogonal. If Π is a regular algebraic, polarized, cuspidal automorphic representation of GLn(𝔸K), and if ρ is a p-adic Galois representation attached to Π, then ρ is polarized and we show that all of its polarized irreducible constituents have sign +1 . In particular, we determine the orthogonal/symplectic alternative for the Galois representations associated to the regular algebraic, essentially self-dual, cuspidal automorphic representations of GLn (𝔸F) when F is a totally real number field.

The principal aim of this article is to attach and study $p$ -adic $L$ -functions to cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations $\Pi$ of $\operatorname {GL}_{2n}$ over a totally real field $F$ admitting a Shalika model. We use a modular symbol approach, along the global lines of the work of Ash and Ginzburg, but our results are more definitive because we draw heavily upon the methods used in the recent and separate works of all three authors. By construction, our $p$ -adic $L$ -functions are distributions on the Galois group of the maximal abelian extension of $F$ unramified outside $p\infty$ . Moreover, we work under a weaker Panchishkine-type condition on $\Pi _p$ rather than the full ordinariness condition. Finally, we prove the so-called Manin relations between the $p$ -adic $L$ -functions at all critical points. This has the striking consequence that, given a unitary $\Pi$ whose standard $L$ -function admits at least two critical points, and given a prime $p$ such that $\Pi _p$ is ordinary, the central critical value $L(\frac {1}{2}, \Pi \otimes \chi )$ is non-zero for all except finitely many Dirichlet characters $\chi$ of $p$ -power conductor.

AbstractWe prove modularity of some two-dimensional,$\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}2$-adic Galois representations over a totally real field that are nearly ordinary at all places above$2$and that are residually dihedral. We do this by employing the strategy of Skinner and Wiles, using Hida families, together with the$2$-adic patching method of Khare and Wintenberger. As an application we deduce modularity of some elliptic curves over totally real fields that have good ordinary or multiplicative reduction at places above $2$.

Let $F$ be a totally real field in which a prime $p$ is unramified. We define the Goren–Oort stratification of the characteristic-$p$ fiber of a quaternionic Shimura variety of maximal level at $p$. We show that each stratum is a $(\mathbb{P}^{1})^{r}$-bundle over other quaternionic Shimura varieties (for an appropriate integer $r$). As an application, we give a necessary condition for the ampleness of a modular line bundle on a quaternionic Shimura variety in characteristic $p$.

We consider mod $p$ Hilbert modular forms associated to a totally real field of degree $d$ in which $p$ is unramified. We prove that every such form arises by multiplication by partial Hasse invariants from one whose weight (a $d$-tuple of integers) lies in a certain cone contained in the set of non-negative weights, answering a question of Andreatta and Goren. The proof is based on properties of the Goren–Oort stratification on mod $p$ Hilbert modular varieties established by Goren and Oort, and Tian and Xiao.

AbstractIn this paper we generalize the work of Harris–Soudry–Taylor and construct the compatible systems of two-dimensional Galois representations attached to cuspidal automorphic representations of cohomological type on ${\rm GL}_2$ over a CM field with a suitable condition on their central characters. We also prove a local-global compatibility statement, up to semi-simplification.

Under an assumption on the existence of $p$ -adic Galois representations, we carry out Taylor–Wiles patching (in the derived category) for the completed homology of the locally symmetric spaces associated with $\operatorname{GL}_{n}$ over a number field. We use our construction, and some new results in non-commutative algebra, to show that standard conjectures on completed homology imply ‘big $R=\text{big}~\mathbb{T}$ ’ theorems in situations where one cannot hope to appeal to the Zariski density of classical points (in contrast to all previous results of this kind). In the case where $n=2$ and  $p$ splits completely in the number field, we relate our construction to the $p$ -adic local Langlands correspondence for  $\operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ .

AbstractTwo constructions of cohomology classes for congruence subgroups of unit groups of quadratic forms over totally real number fields are given and shown to coincide. One is geometric, using cycles, and the other is analytic, using the oscillator (Weil) representation. Considerable background material on this representation is given.
