Effects of Annealing on the Corrosion Property of CZ1 Alloy

CZ alloys were developed by China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) for pressurized water reactor. To improve the corrosion resistance, the impacts of annealing on corrosion of CZ1 alloy were studied. The fuel cladding tubes of CZ1 alloy was fabricated by different annealing processes, with intermediate annealing in the range of 560 °C to 700 °C. Then the corrosion properties of CZ1 alloy and low Tin Zr-4 specimens were investigated by autoclave tests. The matrix and second phase particles along with the oxide characteristics were analyzed. The experimental results showed that the corrosion resistance of CZ1 alloy is superior to that of low Tin Zr-4,. Besides, Lower corrosion weight gain is obtained in the cladding tubes with decreasing annealing temperature, which correlates well with the smaller size of second phase particles. The underlying mechanism was discussed. The results in this study will be used as a guide for the material processing design of CZ1 alloy.

The effects of aluminum on the mechanical properties and corrosion behavior in artificial seawater of Cu-Ni-Fe-Mn alloys were investigated. Cu-7Ni-xAl-1Fe-1Mn samples, consisting of 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt % aluminum along with the same contents of other alloying elements (Ni, Fe, and Mn), were prepared. The microstructure of Cu-7Ni-xAl-1Fe-1Mn alloy was analyzed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and its corrosion property was tested by an electrochemical system. The results show that the mechanical and corrosion properties of Cu-7Ni-xAl-1Fe-1Mn alloy have an obvious change with the aluminum content. The tensile strength has a peak value of 395 MPa by adding 3 wt % aluminum in the alloy. Moreover, the corrosion rate in artificial seawater of Cu-7Ni-3Al-1Fe-1Mn alloy is 0.0215 mm/a which exhibits a better corrosion resistance than the commercially used UNS C70600. It is confirmed that the second-phase transformation of Cu-7Ni-xAl-1Fe-1Mn alloy follows the sequence of α solid solution → Ni3Al → Ni3Al + NiAl → Ni3Al + NiAl3. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) shows that the adding element aluminum in the Cupronickel can improve the corrosion resistance of Cu-7Ni-xAl-1Fe-1Mn alloy.

Zinc is widely used in battery negative electrodes and steel coatings for automotive industries. The anti-corrosion property of zinc is the most important factor determining the performance and lifetime of the products. In this paper, both size-controlled poly N-(vinyl)pyrrole (PNVPY) nanoparticles and carbon black (CB) nanoparticles were compounded with poly (vinyl butyral) (PVB) binder developing a series of composite coatings covered on the zinc substrates using a spin-coating technique. The morphologies of the surface and cross section of the PNVPY/CB/PVB coatings indicate that the PNVPY and CB nanoparticles are uniformly distributed in the matrix. The corrosion resistance of the composite coatings was tested by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization in a 3.5% NaCl solution. It is found that the coating with 1.9 wt.% PNVPY and 2.3 wt.% CB nanoparticles shows a remarkably high resistance value (Rc) and corrosion protection efficiency (99.99%). Meanwhile, the immersion results also reveal its superior corrosion resistance. It is considered that the nanoscale dispersion of PNVPY and carbon in PVB matrix and the strong interface action between the nanoparticles and PVB result in the uniform microstructure of the composites which endues the superior corrosion properties of the coatings.

In this paper, JMatPro thermodynamic software, OM, SEM, TEM, and EPMA were used to study the microstructure and mechanical properties of SA738 Gr.B nuclear power steel after tempering at 630–710 °C. When tempered within the range of 630–670 °C, a huge amount of M3C and MC carbides were dispersed and precipitated in the ferrite matrix, and the strength and toughness matched well; when the tempering temperature rose above 670 °C, hard and brittle plate-martensites formed at the grain boundary, leading to the tensile strength of the experimental steel increased, while the low-temperature impact toughness significantly decreased and the yield strength also declined due to the disappearance of the finely dispersed second phase particles in the matrix.

One important problem in determination of precipitate particle size is the effect of preferential thinning during TEM specimen preparation. Figure 1a schematically represents the original polydispersed Ni3Al precipitates in the Ni rich matrix. The three possible type surface profiles of TEM specimens, which result after electrolytic thinning process are illustrated in Figure 1b. c. & d. These various surface profiles could be produced by using different polishing electrolytes and conditions (i.e. temperature and electric current). The matrix-preferential-etching process causes the matrix material to be attacked much more rapidly than the second phase particles. Figure 1b indicated the result. The nonpreferential and precipitate-preferential-etching results are shown in Figures 1c and 1d respectively.

The Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant phase 1 unit (QNPP-1) has a power rating of 320 MWe generated by a pressurized water reactor that was designed and constructed by China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC). The TELEPERM XS I&C system (TXS) is to be implemented to transform analog reactor protection system (RPS) in QNPP-1. The paper mainly describes the function, structure and characteristic of RPS in QNPP-1. It focuses on the outstanding features of digital I&C, such as strong online self-test capability, the degradation of the voting logic processing, interface improvements and CPU security. There are some typical failures during the operation of reactor protection system in QNPP-1. The way to analyze and process the failures is different from analog I&C. The paper summarizes typical failures of the digital RPS in the following types: CPU failure, communication failure, power failure, Input and output (IO) failure. It discusses the cause, risk and mainly processing points of typical failure, especially CPU and communication failures of the digital RPS. It is helpful for the maintenance of the system. The paper covers measures to improve the reliability of related components which has been put forward effective in Digital reactor protection system in QNPP-1. It will be valuable in nuclear community to improve the reliability of important components of nuclear power plants.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of deformation mode on recrystallization behavior of severely deformed material. Commercial purity AA3104 aluminum alloy was deformed via high pressure torsion and equal channel angular pressing to different strains and then annealed to obtain the state of partial recrystallization. The microstructure and the crystallographic texture were analysed using scanning and transmission electron microscopes equipped with orientation measurement facilities. The nucleation of new grains was observed in bulk recrystallized samples and during in-situ recrystallization in the transmission microscope. Irrespective of the applied deformation mode, a large non-deformable second phase particles strongly influenced strengthening of the matrix through deformation zones around them. It is known that relatively high stored energy stimulates the nucleation of new grains during the recrystalization. In most of the observed cases, the growth of recrystallized grains occurred by the coalescence of neighboring subcells. This process usually led to nearly homogeneous equiaxed grains of similar size. The diameter of grains in the vicinity of large second phase particles was only occasionally significantly larger than the average grain size. Large grains were most often observed in places far from the particles. TEM orientation mapping from highly deformed zones around particles showed that orientations of new grains were not random and only strictly defined groups of orientations were observed.

In order to investigate systematically the effect of Bi addition on the corrosion resistance of zirconium alloys, different zirconium-based alloys, including Zr-4 (Zr-1.5Sn-0.2Fe-0.1Cr), S5 (Zr-0.8Sn-0.35Nb-0.4Fe-0.1Cr), T5 (Zr-0.7Sn-1.0Nb-0.3Fe-0.1Cr) and Zr-1Nb, were adopted to prepare the zirconium alloys containing Bi of 0∼0.5% in mass fraction. These alloys were denoted as Zr-4+xBi, S5+xBi, T5+xBi and Zr-1Nb+xBi, respectively. The corrosion behavior of these specimens was investigated by autoclave testing in lithiated water with 0.01 M LiOH or deionized water at 360°C/18.6 MPa and in superheated steam at 400 °C/10.3 MPa. The micro structure of the alloys was examined by TEM and the second phase particles (SPPs) were analyzed by EDS. Micro structure observation shows that the addition of Bi promotes the precipitation of Sn as second phase particles (SPPs) because Sn is in solid solution in α-Zr matrix in Zr-4, S5 and T5 alloys. The concentration of Bi dissolved in α-Zr matrix increase with the increase of Nb in the alloys, and the excess Bi precipitates as Bi-containing SPPs. The corrosion results show that the effect of Bi addition on the corrosion behavior of different zirconium-based alloys is very complicated, depending on their compositions and corrosion conditions. In the case of higher Bi concentration in α-Zr, the zirconium alloys exhibit better corrosion resistance. However, in the case of precipitation of Bi-containing SPPs, the corrosion resistance gets worse. This indicates that the solid solution of Bi in α-Zr matrix can improve the corrosion resistance, while the precipitation of the Bi-containing SPPs is harmful to the corrosion resistance.

Friction stir processing (FSP) is the effective method of the grain refinement for light metals. The aim of this study is to acquire the fine grained bulk Mg-Y-Zn alloy by ingot metallurgy route much lower in cost. Such bulk alloy can be formed by the superplastic forging. The microstructure of as-cast Mg-Y-Zn alloy was dendrite. The dendrite arm spacing was 72.5 [(m], and there are the lamellar structures in it. FSP was conducted on allover the plate of Mg-Y-Zn alloy for both surfaces by the rotational tool with FSW machine. The stirring passes were shifted half of the probe diameter every execution. The dendrite structures disappeared after FSP, but the lamellar structure could be observed by TEM. The matrix became recrystallized fine grain, and interdendritic second phase particles were dispersed in the grain boundaries. By using FSP, cast Mg-Y-Zn alloy could have fine-grained. This result compared to this material produced by equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) or rapid-solidified powder metallurgy (RS P/M). As the result, as-FSPed material has the higher hardness than materials produced by the other processes at the similar grain size.

The corrosion resistance of carbon-carbon composite materials (C–C composites) was studied in a corrosive media of coolant NaF+ZrF4 salt (a model heat-transfer) at 700 °С in the air flow. It has been shown that C–C composite material is resistant to the model heat-transfer even under conditions of critical temperature accident. The main mechanism that leads to the C–C composite corrosion is a mechanism of composite material oxidation due to the contact with the air. The study has evidenced that the C–C composite burn-up rate well correlates with the pyrocarbon matrix content in the composite, the matrix content increase by 2530% results in the composite corrosion resistance increase by a factor of 2–4. So, by developing corrosion-resistant carbon-carbon composites one has a problem of finding an optimum fiber-matrix ratio in the composite. It has been confirmed experimentally that by silication of C–C composites with the use of the methods which were developed in NSC KIPT it is possible to increase the service life of products under simulated accident conditions by a factor of 7–7.5.
