Two new species of Kalyptorhynchia (Rhabdocoela), namely Itaipusa sinensis n. sp. (Koinocystididae) and Prognathorhynchus sinensis n. sp. (Gnathorhynchidae) were described from brackish water near Shenzhen Bay, representing the first records of Koinocystididae and Gnathorhynchidae in China. For I. sinensis n. sp., the U-shaped cirrus contains 50 triangular lamellar spines, with two cuticular (pseudocuticular) hooks situated at both sides of its anterior part. The hook I (right side) is funnel-shaped, while the hook II (left side) is triangular lamellar in shape. For P. sinensis n. sp., the proboscis hook has two hooks situated in an anterior to posterior sequence. The semicircular tubular stylet has a hollow spherical dead end posteriorly to the distal opening. Both the morphological and phylogenetic (18S rDNA and 28S rDNA) analyses support the establishment of these two new species.

Two new species of the genus Pogaina Marcus, 1954 (Provorticidae), namely Pogaina sinensis n. sp. and Pogaina shenzhenensis n. sp. are described from brackish water in the intertidal zone of Shenzhen Bay. For P. sinensis n. sp., the tubular stylet is slightly curved at the distal end and a fusiform structure with a flange is present at 66% of the stylet. The flange encircles the stylet, with its ends attached to the midpoint and the distal end of the stylet. For P. shenzhenensis n. sp., the stylet has a N-shaped overall morphology. A band provided with dense needle-like structures is present at the distal end of the stylet. Both the morphological (stylet) and phylogenetic (18S rDNA and 28S rDNA) analyses support the establishment of these two new species.

Two new species of Rhabdocoela, namely Alcha sinensis n. sp. (Polycystididae) and Trigonostomum sinensis n. sp. (Trigonostomidae), were discovered from the intertidal zone of eastern Shenzhen City, China. For A. sinensis n. sp., the stylet consists of two symmetrical triangular plates and one lamellar plate. All three plates are jagged at their posterior ends. The anterior end of the stylet connects to a thick muscular layer, which causes its movement. For T. sinensis n. sp., the copulatory organ consists of a long-tubular stylet and two "T"-shaped plates (plate I and plate II). The stylet bends 120° at 25% of its length from the base and extends straight distally. Two "T" plates are connected to each other and surround the stylet. Plate I is hook-shaped at its distal end, and plate II has a similar length but only half the width of plate I. The phylogenetic (18S rDNA and 28S rDNA) results also support the establishment of these two new species. On the basis of the molecular phylogeny and morphology of the copulatory organ and bursa appendage, we propose a new categorization of the species of Trigonostomum.

Two new species of the genus Hisonotus are described from the upper Rio Tapajós basin, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. They are small species, growing up to about 30.0 mm SL, having the scapular bridge wide and totally exposed or having a small median pair of arrector fossae, and the abdomen completely covered with large plates in adult specimens (about 23.0 mm SL). They are distinguished from their congeners by the following combination of characters: Hisonotus chromodontus has 20-40 reddish-brown tipped premaxillary teeth, and 15-38 on the dentary bones; 2324 plates on the longitudinal series; a prominent large dark brown lateral stripe extending from the tip of the snout to the caudal blotch; transversal dark brown bars very inconspicuous or absent. Hisonotus luteofrenatus has a moderate number (12-28) of hyaline or slightly yellow-tipped premaxillary teeth, and 9-26 on the dentary bones; 25-26 plates on the longitudinal series; a characteristic yellow line extending from the anterior part of each orbit, over the inferior nostril, both converging to the tip of the snout.

AbstractParactinolaimus sahandi n. sp., found in wet soil samples collected from the rhizosphere of grasses of Sahand Mountains, Iran, is described. This new species is characterized by its long body (3.5–4.7 mm), high a value (74.5–88.5), anterior location of posterior subventral nuclei, occupying 62.5–68.0% of glandularium distance, the presence of 1–4 pre- and 1–3 post-vulval papillae and numerous tiny, not innervated papillae in front and behind the vulva in the outer layer of cuticle; common functional males in the population, with 62.5–81.3 μm long spicules and 15–17 ventromedian supplements. The new species, which is the only one in the genus showing the advulval cuticular tiny papillae and is unusually slender, is compared to four species of Paractinolaimus, namely P. macrolaimus, P. longidrilus, P. spanithelus and P. rafiqi. The ribosomal 18S rDNA (1246 bp sequenced) and 28S rDNA D2/D3 region (844 bp sequenced) of P. sahandi n. sp. were sequenced for molecular characterization. Sequences of the 18S and 28S D2/D3 of P. sahandi n. sp. have distinct differences from those of the only sequenced P. macrolaimus, with 6 bp differences in 18S and 38 bp differences and five gaps in 28S. This is the first report of the occurrence of members of Actinolaimidae in Iran.

Based initially on microfossils, Nostolepis is one of the first known ‘acanthodians’, which constitute a paraphyletic assemblage of plesiomorphic members of the total group Chondrichthyes. Its wide distribution has potential implications for stratigraphic comparisons worldwide. Six species of Nostolepis have been reported in China, including one species from the Xitun Formation (Lochkovian, Lower Devonian) of Qujing, eastern Yunnan. Acid preparation of rock samples from the Xitun Formation has yielded abundant acanthodian remains. Based on both morphological and histological examinations, here we identify five species of Nostolepis, including two new species. N. qujingensis sp. nov. is characterized by thin scales devoid of the neck anteriorly and the dentine tubules rarely present in the anterior part of the crown. N. digitus sp. nov. is characterized by parallel ridges on anterior and lateral margins of the crown, and the neck constricted and ornamented with pore openings. We extend the duration of N. striata in China from the Pridoli of Silurian (Yulungssu Formation) to the Lower Devonian in Qujing and report the first occurrences of N. amplifica and N. consueta in this region. This study increases the diversity of the Lower Devonian Xitun Fauna and provides a better understanding of the paleogeographic distribution of Nostolepis.

The validity of Genolopa Linton, 1910 has been controversial because the observation of presently recognized critical diagnostic morphological features (spines in the genital atrium and a bipartite, anteriorly spined terminal organ) were omitted from the original diagnosis, and these features were not universally appreciated as important diagnostic features until 2008. Modern taxonomists have been further challenged by inappropriate fixation techniques that have resulted in various interpretations of morphological features. Consequently, named species in the genus have fluctuated among other monorchiid genera depending on various interpretations by taxonomists, and a modern consensus on classifying these species is lacking. This study combines a molecular approach with modern conventional morphological techniques to investigate the validity of Genolopa as a lineage within the Monorchiidae. New morphology and molecular sequence data from the type-species of Genolopa were studied, and two new species in the genus were described, Genolopa vesca n. sp. and Genolopa minuscula n. sp. Interrelationships among the Monorchiidae were explored using Bayesian inference analysis of the partial 28S rDNA fragment, incorporating three species of Genolopa for the first time. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the genus represents a natural lineage, supporting the presence of spines in the genital atrium in conjunction with a bipartite and anteriorly spined terminal organ as key features of the generic diagnosis. This study also provides for the first time partial 28S rDNA data for Postmonorchis orthopristis, Lasiotocus trachinoti, Lasiotocus glebulentus, and an unidentified species of Lasiotocus.

The aim of this study is to solve taxonomic problems pertaining to Spio filicornis (O.F. Müller, 1776). The original description by O. F. Müller was very brief and type material was not deposited. Based on the literature the confusion about the identity of the species has been tremendous; e.g., it was only recently realized that at least two different species from the North and Baltic Seas could be identified as S. filicornis (Bick et al. 2010). The present study is based on material collected by the authors in 2009 at the type locality in Iluilârssuk, near Paamiut, SW Greenland. Spio filicornis is redescribed in detail and illustrated comprehensively. A neotype has been designated and deposited in the collection of Rostock University. Species formerly referred to as S. cf. filicornis from the North and Baltic Seas (Bick et al. 2010) are formally described as two new species, Spio arndti sp. nov., and S. symphyta sp. nov. The morphological diagnostic characters within Spio are discussed. Information on three molecular markers (16S rDNA, 18S rDNA, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) is also provided. The genetic divergence between the three Spio species corroborates the taxonomic discrimination.

This study was conducted to describe and illustrate two new species of groundwater amphipods from the northern parts of the Zagros Mountains in West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. Mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear (28S rDNA) fragments as well as several morphological traits were used to characterize Niphargus urmiensis sp. nov. and Niphargus fiseri sp. nov. The phylogenetic analyses showed that the nucleotide differences between the recently described species and their close allies are attributed to their distinctiveness. The molecular analysis also introduced that the new species are placed within the clade comprising Iranian species as a sister taxon. The genetic distances between N. urmiensis sp. nov. and N. fiseri sp. nov. are 7.6% and 1.6%, respectively based on the COI and 28S rDNA gene fragments.
