Studies often portray elite students as self-interested adolescents who justify educational selection systems that favor them. However, this perspective neglects critiques of the college admissions system on the part of the elite, who often have no other option than to support it as fulfilling the ideals of fairness. This study examines academic elite students’ perceptions of college admissions systems when they are given choices as to which system to use. Data for this study come from surveys, interviews, and participant observation in Taiwan, where students are selected through two systems: exam-based selections and application-based selections. The findings show that students in elite high schools perceive whichever system that benefits them to be the fairest. By narrowly defining fairness as family influence on admission outcomes, these students downplay the institutional advantages they enjoy and present themselves as deserving candidates. Using the example of elite Taiwanese students, this study highlights that elites justify privilege based on self-interest and strategically navigate admissions systems to accrue advantages.

The success of a school, of course, cannot be separated from the roles of teachers and employees. With the presence of teachers who meet predetermined quality standards, the school's productivity will increase and its quality can be maintained. Therefore, the school is required to be able to select a more objective recruitment of prospective employees. A process that is not objective will lead to inaccuracy in selecting prospective employees. To overcome this problem, a candidate recruitment application system is needed that can select prospective employees as needed. This research took place in private high schools in Jakarta. The system development method used in this research is the waterfall. The application developed in this study consisted of three users, namely the principal, assessors and prospective employees. This study produces an application that can be used by the private high school in selecting prospective employees according to their needs.

Abstract Factors affecting business students’ choice of career in accounting and factors affecting business students’ inability to choose a career in accounting remains unclear. We used SPSS to analyze data collected from four randomly selected senior high schools in the central region of Ghana through questionnaires. This paper investigated the influences of job opportunities, personal interest, family influence, social status, peer influence, salary expectation, weakness in mathematics, time it takes to become an accountant, and stress involved in the accounting career. The paper then revealed the effects of these influencing factors. Though other factors were found to have substantial effects, the results clearly shows that high salary expectation and job opportunities are the most influential factors that influences a business student’s choice to choose or not to choose a career in accounting. These results could be used as a reference for educational reforms and career counselling.

In the sociological analysis of the cultures of aikido and judo coaches, we intend to demonstrate the social profile, defined by the socio-professional category and the socio-cultural status of individuals, determined as choices and the intensity of professional aikido and judo practice. To deepen the object of study, we define three hypotheses and create an analysis model for its operationalization. Several social techniques were used: direct observation, participant observation, semi-direct interview and survey research. The universe consisted of 60 coaches, at a national level, having been executed in order to complete 6 interviews with privileged interlocutors. The results reveal that there is a homogeneity between the social groups that practice the two combat sports, although they find differences in habits and values, according to sex, age and level of education. The analysis of the information mobilized points to a differentiation in the social level, in the visibility, in the career opportunities, in the profile and in the sports under study. The data point to a differentiation in the level of involvement, especially the type of practice/conception, the conditions of access, the family influence, the intensity of the practice and the associative participation according to the social profile and the sports under analysis.

AbstractThis research aims to investigate the interaction network formed through Couchsurfing.org web site in Rio de Janeiro, in a way to understand, through participant observation and based on the results of a survey applied to members of the community of couchsurfers of Rio de Janeiro, some ways of building relationships of trust, reputation and reciprocity in collaborative network. Thus, we seek to contribute to understand the importance of logical P2P for new social behaviors that have affected contemporary moral. We have gone from a culture where individualism and consumerism are revered to one in which the community and share count more. The present study examines predictors of support for ethnicity-based AA in college admissions. There is considerable work focused on predicting support for AA policies in employment but there is comparative dearth of knowledge about reactions to AA in education. This work applies existing models of support for AA that include beliefs about AA policies (fairness, merit, diversity valuation, and prevalence of discrimination) and individual characteristics (sex, liberality, and self-interest). White (n = 413) and Hispanic (n = 343) college students completed measures of the model predictors and reactions to a general AA policy and several specific policies (e.g., recruitment of minority applicants, different standards for admission). Regarding the general policy, those who more strongly valued diversity in educational settings and believed discrimination still existed indicated stronger supported for AA. Surprisingly fairness, merit, sex, and liberality did not uniquely predict support in either sample. Self-interest related to greater support for Hispanic participants only. Across specific policy applications, diversity valuation and recognition of ongoing issues with discrimination were the also most consistent predictors. Findings highlight that models of support for AA in hiring may not be wholly applicable in predicting support for AA in educational admissions.

Using the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002, we examined the probability of students attending college by taking into account their 10th- and 12th-grade exposure to college expectations from and college-related interactions with school staff. Our results suggest that college expectations and college-related interactions with their school counselors, teachers, and coaches had a modest impact on students' odds of enrolling in college, considering the large impact of taking advanced courses and completing college admissions tests.

This study aims to analyze the role of professionals involved in nature-based activities in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil and surrounding regions, namely: rock climbing and birdwatching. The research was based on two key questions: “How does the role of these professionals vary with different kinds of leisure experiences in nature?” and “What are the issues addressed in the discourse and practices of these professionals regarding environmental awareness and environmental degradation aspects?” The methodology applied herein was based on a qualitative approach to data collection. Data was collected through participant observation and semi-structured interviews, which included 15 participants who worked as guides in this region. Participant observation took place during trips organized by such professionals, focused on observing the relationship between guides and participants, their behavior towards nature, and the contact established with the villages in which they developed leisure activities. The results indicated that the professionals who work in nature-based activities first came into contact with these experiences through family influence, during childhood. From such initial contact, they started to seek technical development in undergraduate courses, extension courses, and organizations that aim to further professionalize the field. Issues that involve environmental awareness and environmental degradation seem to have little relevance in the discourses and practices of rock climbing professionals. Otherwise, professionals engaged in wildlife viewing demonstrated greater sensibility to environmental issues. A less dichotomous view, in which barriers between human beings and nature are narrowed, can be achieved through these experiences of nature-based activities and, in this aspect, the professionals involved must be considered as extremely relevant.

This study considers the issue of absenteeism in Norwegian high schools with a particular focus on the new controversial 10% ceiling, which began in August 2016. Data was obtained through documentary sources and participant observation in one high school with one of the highest absenteeism rates in the capital, Oslo. Employing Foucault’s ‘panoptic gaze’, the study also interrogates schools’ growing dependence on technology in self-reporting absence and enacting more effective forms of ‘disciplinary power’. The study argues that each school and each individual case warrant careful attention before macro-policies on a national level are enacted by politicians, who at best have a superficial familiarity with the challenges and uncertainties that constrain these students’ academic progress.
