This research reveals the perception of teachers in General Basic Education Pedagogy regarding the disciplinary competencies in the subject of mathematics achieved during their initial training process. The results of the interviews applied to these professionals show a dissatisfaction with the mathematical knowledge received, considering that this has generated difficulties in their professional development since, from the perspective of the interviewees, higher education institutions did not fulfill their training role in this subject area.

AbstractRe-curriculation is currently the most talked about topic in Higher Education in South Africa because of the new Higher Education Qualification Sub-Framework alignment process required by all Higher Education Institutions. However, the lecturer in the classroom, especially new lecturers, are also faced with the task of designing the actual curricula of a subject once the new qualification is to be implemented, in terms of achieving the aims and objectives of the subject area. In other words, ensuring that the outcomes of the subject are achieved by the student. Ideally all lecturers at institutions of higher learning should develop strategies for their “own” curricula. Developing the aforementioned strategies might be challenging to first time lecturers. The methodologies of developing a new qualification and strategies for building curricula is discussed in this paper are different curriculum planning methods and strategies. The aforementioned strategies are focusing on students, mentoring, supportive tools such as software programmes, feedback and assessments. The findings of this paper are proper curricula development to enhance the ability to understand, recall and apply information. The main objective is to use proper curricula development to empower students with a diversity of cultures to understand the material presented by the lecturer. This paper concludes that curricula planning should allow students to be given space to grow and interact and ultimately attain deep life-long learning.

The current study reports on the results of research into introductory accounting students’ conceptions of accounting and expectations of learning the subject of accounting within Portuguese higher education. The results validate the use of the ELAcc inventory in Portuguese higher education and are in line with the literature that argues that subject area has an influence on aspects of learning. In particular, they point out the differences between specialist and non-specialist students’ conceptions of accounting and their expectations of learning accounting. This circumstance highlights the need to consider the different programmes in which introductory accounting is taught.

The present article discusses the problem of development of students’ professional orientation. The article presents an author’s complex of pedagogical conditions that facilitate students’ professional development in institution of higher learning. The complex embraces the following: revelation and formation of students’ values; creation of an educational environment in an institute of higher education that promotes self-realization of an individual; consideration of the subject experience of students; development of pedagogical abilities of future teachers; development of professional skills of university teachers as the basis for formation of professional orientation. Moreover, the article describes the results of experimental work which has confirmed the effectiveness of the developed complex of pedagogical conditions that ensure the development of students’ professional orientation in an institute of higher education based on personality orientation of academic work.

The shift in perception, from librarians as providers of information to librarians as educators in the effective use of information, requires the profession to become aware of differing approaches to the development of teaching and of the professional consciousness of educators: also of the way certain forms of teaching and CPD are privileged over others within higher education institutions, and why. This paper reports on and synthesises a range of theoretical works in this area, to explain how becoming an effective information literacy educator requires not just an awareness of practice, but developing it, through a continous interaction between theory and practice. The librarian-as-educator must engage in professional development practices which, ultimately, require the continuous questioning of the very foundations of IL, and work actively towards raising awareness of these processes throughout their institutions.

Purpose Higher education institutions (HEIs) should assume their role as leaders in the search for a sustainable future. Consequently, such institutions need to incorporate sustainability into their activities. However, this needs to be done holistically and not with isolated and independent actions. Therefore, this study aims to develop a structure of sustainability action archetypes to help HEIs holistically incorporate sustainability in their strategies. Design/methodology/approach A systematic review of the literature was conducted focusing on the subject of sustainability in HEIs. Findings A structure of sustainability action archetypes for HEIs was proposed. Further, based on scientific literature, examples of actions were presented within each archetype. Practical implications This study provides HEI administrators and other organizations with a practical structure to enable the systemic incorporation of sustainability objectives and actions into institutional activities. Originality/value This study adapts the tool “sustainable business model archetypes” for a new purpose. This tool was initially developed to classify innovations of sustainable business models.

Over the past decade or two advancements in educational technology have taken place so swiftly that it threatens to revolutionize the education system. This phenomena seem to drive higher education institutions to respond with costly roll out plans that bring state of the art computing hard- and software, together with other highly specialized educational technologies, to their campuses. The dilemma is that these investments in educational technology are often made in isolation, without consideration for imperative aspects such as professional development. To progress, educators need to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to make optimal use of the technology. This can be achieved, among other, by means of well-structured professional development programmes. In this chapter the author explores the role of educational technology in higher education and establishes the need for capacity building by means of carefully designed professional development programmes. It furthermore suggests an alternative professional development framework.

Nowadays, higher education is not only an essential condition for the spiritual and professional development of the individual, but also a decisive factor in socio-economic transformation.Taking into consideration changing nature of learning and teaching at higher education institutions, the need for professional development of teachers is increasing. The main purpose of the thesis is to highlight the problem of professional development of academic staff, its relevance and importance for improving learning and teaching. There will be presented a model of teachers’ skills improvement implemented at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University (Ukraine), as well as new approaches to the organization of training for higher school teachers that combine different training strategies for their development.
