Today our main goal is to use authentic texts, including the study of the peculiarities of intercultural communication in the environment of communicative teaching of foreign languages. Authentic text reflects the use of natural language. It should be noted that the teaching of authentic texts in teaching a foreign language should be determined by the language level of the students. The selection criteria for authentic texts in German differ depending on the language level of the students. Key words: authentic texts, intercultural communication, communicative learning

This article outlines approaches on how to support writing skills and text competence when teaching German as a foreign language. The main question is whether and how dealing in detail with one’s own mistakes and actively analysing one’s own writing process can contribute to improving writing skills in teaching German as a foreign language. Reflections which were written down during the 2013/14 winter and 2016 summer semester at the University of Graz by students studying German as a foreign language, level C1, serve as basis for this article. These reflections refer to texts gathered within one semester respectively. They address subjects relevant to the daily life of a translator in training, such as economics, law, culture, medicine and technology. During this period of reflection, students addressed the question of whether their approach to writing texts has changed in the course of one semester. In addition, they were asked to focus on which mistakes were made repeatedly and to which error category they belonged. Furthermore, they examined the areas in which they feel that they have personally improved and see their strengths. This article aims to demonstrate to what extent this teaching approach succeeded.

The article presents current issues of using song material in classes of Russian as a foreign language. The main advantages of using song material, which help to reveal the main competencies in teaching a foreign language, are highlighted. The criteria for selecting songs, presented for complex work on the use of song material in the lessons of Russian as a foreign language, are considered. Examples of using various songs in accordance with the language level of foreign students are given.

The aims of learning Croatian as a mother language and Croatian as a foreign language are defined by functional and communicational principles and they imply working on a text. At the starting levels of learning Croatian as a foreign language shorter and more simple texts are used, with more simple language structures and prototype words, in teaching of which the principle of prototype, frequency and graduality is obeyed, according to the language level of attendants of certain programmes. This work analyses the most represented prepositions as well as semantic representation of prepositions and prepositional case expressions in the textual part of a textbook at the strarting level of learning Croatian as a foreign language and it tries, through their analysis, to determine to what extent above named principles are obeyed.

Das Germanistikstudium in Polen ist seit einiger Zeit von einer merklichen Krise betroffen, was mit der stark abnehmenden Zahl der Lernenden und Studierenden im Bereich des Deutschen als Fremdsprache einhergeht. Im Beitrag wird zunächst der aktuelle Status des Deutschen als Fremdsprache in Polen umrissen. Dann geht der Autor auf die gegenwärtige Situation der polnischen Germanistik am Beispiel der Schlesischen Universität Katowice ein. Die Aufmerksamkeit richtet sich auf die Analyse der Ergebnisse eines grammatisch-lexikalischen Einstufungstests, der zum Zwecke der Sprachstandsdiagnose am Institut für Germanische Philologie zu Beginn des akademischen Jahres durchgeführt wird. Darüber hinaus verweist der Autor auf die Facetten der Lernmotivation anhand ausgewählter Sprachlernbiografien von Germanistikstudierenden.German studies at university level in Upper Silesia – students’ language level and motivation, taking the University of Silesia in Katowice as an exampleOne can notice quite a serious crisis that German studies in Poland have been facing for some time, which is connected with the fact that the number of those who learn German as a foreign language and the number of students of German are significantly dwindling. At the beginning of the article, the author describes the current status of German as a foreign language in Poland. Next, he discusses the present situation of academic German studies in Poland paying particular attention to the profile of German studies offered by the University of Silesia in Katowice. The researcher concentrates on the results of the vocabulary and grammar test that is administered at the Institute of German Studies at the beginning of the academic year in order to diagnose students’ language skills. Finally, the author shows various reasons for learning German and taking up German studies using selected language biographies of students.

The particular study focuses on the use of board games and argues that they are a useful and practical tool in order to stimulate six year old students’ motivation in learning topic vocabulary in a foreign language classroom. It explains how a number of ready-made board games can be adapted, according to the educational aims, the students’ age and language level in order to maximize positive results in foreign language learning. Through playing board games, young students not only become much more active, but they also anticipate coming to the learning classroom more eagerly since they involve the elements of joy, interaction, cooperation and competition. Moreover, games place the teacher in a background role, acting more as a facilitator; therefore they allow students to take on more responsibility for their learning.To this end, an experimental study design, employing both qualitative and quantitative data research tools, was adopted. The participants, who were eight students of six year old age, were divided into two groups. In the experimental group, only board games were applied in order to give students the opportunity to practise the disseminated topic vocabulary while the control group practised their vocabulary through the activities proposed by the coursebook and the worksheets which were constructed by the researchers. A pre-test and post-tests were administered to students before and after the action research and semi-structured interviews with the students of the experimental group were conducted in order to probe into the students’ views concerning the proposed tool and method of instruction. The analysis of the tests indicated a difference in favor of the experimental group. Finally, the findings of the students’ responses revealed the beneficial effects of using board games to stimulate vocabulary learning to students of the specific age group and language level.

This study was conducted in order to determine the job satisfaction levels of provincial referees on the basis of 9 demographic variables. The study sample consisted of 83 provincial referees working in Kahramanmaras, Adana, and Osmaniye provinces of Turkey. The Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ; Dawis, Weiss, England, & Lofquist, 1967) was used to identify job satisfaction levels. While a statistically significant difference was found between provincial referees in terms of age, foreign language level, income level, and other-than-refereeing jobs and term (p < 0.05); no statistically significant difference was found between the provincial referees in terms of marital status, education level, and sports background (p < 0.05). It is recommended that mental and psychological needs of referees be met to ensure that they can perform well. Moreover, management and senior colleagues should support younger and less experienced referees.

Russian is one of the most abundant languages of our time. Currently, more than 200 million people speak Russian. It is also among the ten working languages of the UN. The Russian language is one of the most difficult for foreign students to study, which necessitates a better approach to the educational process. This article discusses the study of the problem of increasing the effectiveness of teaching foreign students the Russian language as a foreign language. A hypothesis is put forward about the auxiliary use of video courses to solve the problem. An analysis is made of several existing video courses available online, showing their diversity in content, approach, and language level. Some typical difficult moments that may arise in students of the Russian language are considered. It is confirmed that the creation of a new video course and the linguistic and methodological foundations of its introduction into the educational process are new and relevant.

<p>Arabic scholars from the classical to the modern period paid attention to the disciplines of Arabic lexicography. A great attention was given to lexicography, which was fundamentally helpful for active users and speakers of the Arabic language since the era of Khalil bin Ahmad (786 AD) who wrote the Al-‘Ain dictionary to Ahmad Mukhtar Umar's (2003) period with his dictionary Muʻjamu al-Lughah al-‘Arabiyyah al-Muʻāshirah. Modern linguistic studies then produce language levels found in Arabic dictionaries. This level of language is certainly different in the view of Arab lexicographers. Some see it from the perspective of a language level that includes syntax, morphology and phonology, mostly referred to by classical and modern dictionaries. Some others see the language levels typically a variety of languages ammiyyah (al-‘āmmī/colloquial Arabic) and various foreign languages (al-aʻjamī/foreign language). Both of these varieties have seized the attention of Arabic dictionaries through a number of explanations either explicitly or implicitly in these dictionaries. Language levels <br />additionally includes the treasure of language (turāts) literary works are assessed as the basic foundation for language users and reviewers. In addition to turāts, the level of spoken language used daily is also found in Arabic dictionaries. This language level undergoes articulation changes in a number of vocabularies in the form of changes at the vowel marks (charakat). This article outlines these four levels of language by modern Arabic dictionaries which aim to show the extent to which modern Arabic dictionaries make use of the classical Arabic lexicography paradigm and its contribution to the development of descriptions of language vocabulary for current language speakers and modern Arabic dictionary users.</p>
