Process approach or Business Process Management (BPM) allows organizing and framing a company by focusing in the improvement of performance in order to gain competitive advantage. Although it is believed that BPM improves various aspects of organizational performance, there has been a lack of empirical studies about this. The present paper has the purpose to study the impact of business process management in companies performance in Moroccan context. To accomplish that, the theoretical basis required to know the elements that configurate BPM and the measures that can evaluate the BPM success on performance is built through a literature review. Then, a research model is proposed. Empirical data has been collected from a survey of Moroccan companies from different sectors. A quantitative analysis has been performed using structural equation modeling (SEM) to show if the direct and indirect effects between BPM and performance can be considered statistically significant. At the end, we have discussed results, their managerial and scientific implications.

The extensive literature on business process management suggests that organizations can enhance their overall performance by adopting a process view of business. It has been shown in previous studies that the companies which have reached higher business process maturity level consistently outperform those that have not reached them. The paper presents the results of the empirical research that confirms the impact of business process orientation on organizational performance in transition economy by using structural equation modeling. The link is even stronger than in the original investigation. Besides that more detailed specification of organizational performance that includes non-financial performance measures has been used. The results show that business process orientation leads to better non-financial performance and indirectly to better financial performance.

PurposeOrganizations introduce business intelligence (BI) to increase their performance, but often, this initiative is not aligned with the business process management (BPM) initiative, which also aims to improve organizational performance. Although some findings from the literature indicate that BI implementation has a positive impact on organizational performance, the impact seems to be indirect. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to enhance the understanding of how BI maturity is translated into organizational performance. Alignment of BI and BPM initiatives seems one possible way for creating business value with BI, particularly because BI enables process performance measurement and management, which allows the BI initiative to become more business focused.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire was prepared and used to collect data in Croatian and Slovenian organizations with more than 50 employees. A BI–BPM alignment measurement instrument was developed for the purpose of this study using the recommended process of scale development and validation. A total of 185 responses were analyzed by the structural equation modeling technique.FindingsOur results provide evidence that the effect of BI on organizational performance is fully mediated by alignment of BI and BPM initiatives, and therefore, BI business value can be generated through the use of common terminology and methodologies, as well as a strong communication between BI and BPM experts, managers and teams in order to coordinate the two initiatives.Originality/valueThis study has responded to the call for better understanding of how the impact of BI on organization performance is realized. It confirmed that BI and BPM initiatives should be aligned in order to give BI a business value.

Information systems bring about many innovation opportunities for organizations. However, there are also several factors affecting these opportunities that need to be investigated. Therefore, taking this necessity as a starting point, the present study was conducted to provide an insight into the associations between Information Systems Literacy (ISL), and the analytical approach, as well as Business Process Management (BPM) usage and organization performance. To this end, a structural model has been developed to define the link between design, methodology and approach structures and study the mediating effect on the relationship between ISL, analytical approach, BPM, and organization performance. A questionnaire was developed and a total of 404 usable surveys were collected from civil servants employed in various public bodies in Turkey. Using structural equation modeling, the model and the proposed hypotheses were tested. Results showed ISL has a significant and positive effect on BPM and organization performance whereas there is no positive correlation between neither the analytical approach and BPM nor organization performance. Moreover, the success of the employees with a bachelor’s degree or score above 67.8% appears to be linked with the success of the model investigating the association between BPM usage, ISL, and analytical approach affecting organization performance.

When emerging technologies transform an organization’s way of working, explorative business process management (BPM) becomes a new challenge. Although digital innovations can boost process efficacy and business productivity, employees do not necessarily accept the implied work changes. We therefore looked at the increased digitalization efforts during the COVID-19 lockdowns, during which employees were forced to drastically rethink work by heavily depending on technology for communication and almost all business tasks. This global setting allowed us to scrutinize disruptive work changes and how employees can cope with disruptive work adaptations. We also looked into the explorative skillset needed to adapt to these changes. To theorize about an explorative BPM acceptance model, eleven hypotheses were supported based on a solid theoretical foundation. We followed a quantitative research design using partial least squares for structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) at the university administration settings in two regions, including purposive sampling. Data analysis covered both a measurement model assessment and structural model assessment. Our findings reveal that employees’ perceived work modalities, feeling creative and feeling flexible are more promising features than perceived influence and attitude related to explorative work and skill development. We also offer novel insights into explorative business process management (BPM) skills, and which skills are more productive in uncertain or dynamic working conditions. This research is a learning path for managers struggling with flexible or competitive business environments, and more specifically to facilitate employee willingness.

Purpose: This study aims to assess the maturity of Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais in business process management. Theoretical framework: Business Process Management is an alternative to the standard departmentalized structure. This alternative presents Maturity in Processes as the degree of explicit definition, management, measurement, control and effectiveness that a process has. Thus, this Maturity excels in assessing the current situation in order to direct improvement initiatives and control the development of what is being measured. Design/methodology/approach: Data was collected through a questionnaire, obtaining a sample of 729 respondents, and the data was analyzed using the structural equation modeling technique. Findings: The company being studied is at level 4, and is called quantitatively managed, where the promotion of actions to recognize those responsible for the processes and alignment of information systems to customer needs are some of the actions needed to increase this stage. Research, Practical & Social implications: Through the maturity identified, Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais can promote actions to improve its processes, resulting in social impacts arising from the provision of services to the community. Originality/value: From a theoretical perspective, this study contributes by making use of a maturity model and by showing its results for comparisons between companies; because, empirically, it contributes to that company so that it is aware of its current stage and actions to increase that stage. Keywords: BPM; business process management; BPMMM; maturity model; electrical sector.

Information and communications technologies have changed how firms do business and create value. The objective of this study is to improve the understanding of ICT contribution to firm performance and explore the linkage between ICT impacts and business process management among various countries and industries. This study proposes the ICT-enabled Business Process Management Model. To test the model, survey data from the United States, Taiwan, and Chile was collected. The results show that ICT adoption affects business process management significantly. ICT adoption positively affects workplace reform, leading to workforce reform and improved profits. However, only country differences are recognized in BPM. For the USA, resource planning infrastructure affects workforce reform significantly, and e-commerce infrastructure affects workplace reform significantly, later leading to improved profit. For Taiwan, both resource planning infrastructure and e-commerce infrastructure affect workplace reform significantly, but workforce reform is significantly influenced by resource planning infrastructure. For Chile, the e-commerce infrastructure affects workplace reform significantly, leading to improved profit. This paper contributes to IS research by providing empirical evidence on the impact of ICT adoption on business process management. This paper also explores the impacts of ICT adoption on business process management and financial performance among various countries.

Purpose In several studies, it has been found that organizational performance is affected by ambidextrous IT capabilities. Nevertheless, business processes are essential to the value generation conversion of IT investment into performance. In the literature, this focus on the impact of IT capabilities at the business process level is still under investigated. So, the purpose of this paper is to test the effects of explorative and exploitative business process IT capabilities on business process performances (BPP) and the positive moderator role of business process management (BPM) capabilities. Design/methodology/approach This analysis has been done through a quantitative study in the Italian hotel industry. An OLS regression analysis has been carried out on a sample of 404 firms. Findings The study identifies distinct effects related to exploration and exploitation and finds a moderating effect of BPM capabilities, explaining their positive impact on BPP. Originality/value The main purpose of the paper is to contribute to the area of business process management by demonstrating the importance of both explorative and exploitative IT capabilities for a business process as well as the managerial capabilities at the process level. Furthermore, this focus at the process level allows us to add original insights into research on ambidexterity by expanding existing works.
