A reviewer of a book I wrote claimed an idea presented therein could be found elsewhere. Nine years later, no one could say where, but no one would correct the erroneous claim, so what be-gan as an effort to obtain a redress of a legitimate grievance slowly degenerated into a tour d’farce of a surreal ethics warp in our intellectual community. The citations submitted to docu-ment the claim failed to do so, and the file on the dispute maintained by the American Psychological Association (APA) really is not about my case at all. The University of Connecticut (UConn) and the American Association for the Advancement of Sci-ence (AAAS) failed to hold anyone accountable. There was a basic conflict between the conduct of officials of all these organiza-tions and their ethical codes. In a culture of intellectual cor-ruption, behavior consisted of a pervasive and extended cover-up characterized by sophistry, secrecy, fantasy, irrelevance, ra-tionalization, misattribution, misrepresentation, fabrication, falsification, failure to communicate and an adamant refusal to deal logically and fairly with the facts of the case. This demon-strated a complete lack of cognitive integrity and constituted a total betrayal of the academic/scientific commitment to truth.

AbstractWhat happens, if a university moves to a town that never had a higher education institution previously? What is the impact of this development both on the community and the institution? The aim of this paper is to answer this question. The authors use the concept of ‘social innovation’ for understanding the developments. An institute may initiate, organise and coordinate all kinds of learning that takes place in a given community (Bradford, 2003). To do so, the institute may have to change its missions (not only its third, but also its first, second and third ones. These developments could be interpreted as a ‘social innovation’ during which the local economy and society was challenged and they looked for new responses. As suggested in the ‘social innovation’ literature the main research method was participatory research, combined with structured and semi-structured interviews, story-telling and narrative analyses. As a result, three interest groups could be described with various requirements different demands toward the university; while the university had to modify its structure, curriculum and communications. The main lesson to learn is that ’social innovation’ as a frame of interpretation can be used to understand the developmental processes that occurred between the locals and a new university.

After studying briefly with Hermann Ebbinghaus in Berlin, Harry Kirke Wolfe became one of the first two Americans to earn a doctorate in psychology from Wilhelm Wundt at Leipzig. Wolfe founded one of the earliest psychology laboratories in the United States at the University of Nebraska in 1889 and remained there for most of his professional career. His contribution to psychology was as a teacher who inspired numerous students to pursue careers in psychology. The number of students was so large that the University of Nebraska ranked third among all American universities in several surveys in the 1920s that asked psychologists where the received their first inspiration to study psychology. Numbered among his undergraduates are three former presidents of the American Psychological Association: Walter Pillsbury, Madison Bentley, and Edwin Guthrie. This article traces Wolfe's career, emphasizing his blending of psychology and pedagogy, and his qualities as a teacher.

The article by Macey and Schneider (2008) brings me nostalgically back to 1975–1979 and my graduate program at the University of South Florida. In the Industrial-Organizational (I-O) program, Dr. Herb Meyer was reminding us of “split roles in performance appraisal,” and in the Clinical program, Dr. Charlie Spielberger was gaining fame on his state–trait anxiety research—propelling him to president of the American Psychological Association in 1991. The logic of “state–trait” was compelling then and has withstood the test of time. It is surprising that it has taken this long to apply state–trait logic to other important measurements. As a practitioner who is soon to hire 12,000 new employees under one roof to open CityCenter in Las Vegas (2009), it is my hope that we can move beyond concept to selection tools that can help organizations create engaged cultures.
