The research is conducted within the framework of the National Research Programme (NRP) “Latvian Language” (No. VPP-IZM-2018/2-0002) 8th sub-project, “Acquisition of Latvian Language”. The aim of this article is to summarise and systematise the scientific knowledge on the promotion of Latvian language in ethnically and linguistically heterogeneous pre-school groups in the context of a competency-based approach. In Latvia, the competency-based approach has been implemented in pre-school educational institutions since 2019. In the pedagogical work, the transition has taken place from the result to the process, emphasising the child being a researcher. The implementation of this approach has changed the arrangement of the pre-school environment, and also the work of teachers has improved in order to successfully develop the child’s self-directed learning, thinking and creativity, self-knowledge and transversal skills. In the pre-school, children develop literacy, which determines the acquisition of Latvian language both in Latvian and ethnic minority pre-school education programmes. In the competency-based curriculum, it is indicated that the following language acquisition skills should be achieved at the end of pre-school education: • a child can explain why people use language when communicating, listen to the text, name the people acting in it, re-tell the events, invent a continuation to a text, ask questions if confused and answer a specific question, clearly and consistently tell what is seen, heard and experienced, participate in a conversation, does not interrupt the speaker, uses different speech intonations when speaking, distinguishes and names sounds, marks sound with an appropriate letter, reads words and understands what is read, writes written letters; • a child who has acquired an ethnic minority pre-school education curriculum can answer questions in Latvian about what he/she has seen and heard, ask questions to obtain the information, express one’s needs, engage in a conversation on topics related to everyday life and the learning process; learns to pronounce sounds correctly, knows printed letters, reads short words used in the learning process and everyday situations (Pirmsskolas mācību programma 2019). However, it is a challenge for the national education system to ensure high achievements in language acquisition for both monolingual and bilingual children. From an early age, the children’s language development is focused on the expansion and perfection of their skills. At first, children learn to understand and use the sounds, then the words, then the sentences, and finally the whole text. This ensures a diverse interaction with the social environment, using the language tools that stimulate the child’s personal development and the formation of social experience. Within the framework of the NRP “Latvian Language”, a study has been conducted in relation to the language acquisition of pre-school children, indicating the main problem issues. Thus, the following research questions are put forward: (1) How have the opportunities for children’s language acquisition improved in the two years since the competency-based approach is implemented in the pre-school institutions? (2) What are the benefits and challenges of bilingual education? (3) What solutions can be offered to improve the situation?

The article reveals little-known aspects of the life of Sofia Fyodorovna Rusova, clarifies her contribution to the formation and development of extracurricular education in Ukraine, the society “Education” in eastern and western Ukraine. The analysis of published and manuscript works of S. Rusova is carried out, in which the issues of education, national education, native language education are outlined. The role of out-of-school education as a unifying factor in the activity of the nationally conscious intelligentsia and the key to building an independent Ukrainian state is emphasized. Based on primary sources and periodicals of the early twentieth century S. Rusova’s activity in the field of out-of-school education is thoroughly analyzed. It is emphasized that if in Ukraine during its independence (1917 – 1919) a teacher and public figure was able to develop and partially implement a program of organizational formation and approval of various forms of extracurricular education, in emigration it focused mainly on theoretical justification of universal education and its role in moral and social formation of the young generation, preparing it for conscious work for the future of independent Ukraine, improving the social and political conditions of its citizens, as well as covering foreign experience of adult education and its state in the Ukrainian lands of Galicia, Bukovina and Transcarpathia. It is proved that with the direct participation of S. Rusova clear guidelines for the development of the system of out-of-school education were developed, concrete steps were taken to achieve its goal: science for all through active independent learning. It is revealed that actualization of S. Rusova’s ideas is completely correlated with the leading postulates of the Law of Ukraine “On Extracurricular Education”, in which the latter is interpreted as a component of the system of continuing education defined by the Constitution of Ukraine, the Law of Ukraine “On Education”, students and listeners, meeting their interests, spiritual needs and needs in professional determination. A review of the activities and works of Sofia Rusova in the field of extracurricular education allows us to conclude that the scientist had a deep understanding of the need to educate the people, to convey knowledge to all segments of the population.

The article is devoted to the review of the excursion to Yaroslavl of rural school children in 1911. It was the teacher of the primary school of the village Borisoglebskie slobody S. Maksheev who described this excursion. The report of the teacher is very detailed. This rare document depicts the inclusiveness of the rural school into pedagogical innovations of the beginning of the 20th century. Russian teachers of that period tried to avoid bureaucratic formalities in the process of education. They seeked new forms of teaching to approach school to the real life, to make a learning process more vivid and visual and to expand horizons of their pupils. Such new forms of teaching they found in school trips. The teachers of the Yaroslavl region were very active in the process of organization of the excursions. Teachers of the Rostov district were the most active. The excursion of the Borisoglebian school children was one of the first. It was well prepared and well spent. It also reflected rules of the excursions that later would be common for educational tours. S. Maksheev showed advantage of the excursion for his pupils convincingly. His conclusion about cognitive and educational value of excursion corresponded with the opinion of many other teachers about great potential opportunities to improve school education. The excursion of the Borisoglebian school children in 1911 reflected that fact that village teachers of the Yaroslavl region took an active part in the all-Russia process of realization of new forms of teaching. It was specific compensation of the lack of systematic reform of the school education

National education in the Reformation Era is directed at achieving certain goals as stated in Law Number 20 of 2003 concerning SISDIKNAS, that "national education aims to educate the nation's life and develop Indonesian people as a whole. Islamic education as a sub-system of the national education system aspires to the formation of a complete Muslim, namely a qualified Indonesian Muslim while maintaining the noble culture of the nation. Thus education leads to the achievement of noble and harmonious values for Muslim life which is characterized by Indonesia. However, in its journey, morality becomes just adab or manners, losing its philosophical substance; The morality of Indonesian Muslims is experiencing a crisis of morality, and ritual piety is often not positively correlated with social piety. The role of pesantren is needed through alternative education in the form of Sufism, because the science of Sufism can improve morality, as evidence of the success of pesantren in educating their students by integrating Sufism into daily life, so that the morals of students really increase as morality. Based on this, this research was carried out with a focus on How Sufism is an Alternative for Islamic Boarding School Education in Improving Santri Morals to God, Others, and the Environment at Miftahul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, Glagahwero Village, Kalisat District, Jember Regency. This research is a qualitative research. The results showed that, Sufism as an alternative to Islamic boarding school education in improving students' morals to Allah SWT, students' morals to others and students' morals to the environment, is a complex form of education that exceeds non-Islamic boarding school education with Sufism as an alternative education. In this case, the science of Sufism is taught through the recitation of the yellow books, through the practice of morality, and through practices in the form of tariqat/wiridan that are accustomed to every time. As a result, the science of Sufism as an alternative pesantren education taught at the Miftahul Ulum Glagahwero Islamic Boarding School, Kalisat District, Jember Regency has led students to have more moral character than before applying Sufism as an alternative pesantren education.
