Purpose This study aims to investigate the performance differences of Islamic and conventional banks in Pakistan by using financial ratios. Design/methodology/approach This study analyzed 5 Islamic and 19 conventional banks for the periods of 2007-2014. Two types of analyses were performed – sample t-test and logistic regression. Analysis was also performed on sub-sample considering crisis effects. Findings It was found that Islamic banks are relatively better in profitability, efficiency, risk and liquidity management, while conventional banks are superior in asset quality. Higher efficiency of Islamic banks contradicts with previous studies conducted in Pakistan. Probable reasons for this include phenomenal expansion of Islamic banking industry and its broad appeal to customers in Pakistan. Risk management practices of Islamic banks are superior to conventional banks, as Shariah rules restrict pure speculation in monetary terms. Better asset quality of conventional banks is attributed to their recognition and product diversity. During the crisis, Islamic banks were found less profitable than their counterparts. Research limitations/implications This study suggests that high operational efficiency of Islamic banks should be converted into technical efficiency by improving human resource, introducing innovative market-oriented products and prudent resource allocations. As operational efficiency does not promise returns in long term, to sustain ongoing phenomenal growth of Islamic banking, management needs to gain customer trust. Originality/value This is an original research that compares performance differences across Islamic and conventional banks by using financial ratios.

To show the role, then show the performance. Maybe, the term is right for the bank. The existence of banks influences economic stability, therefore financial performance must be good. There is no choice but to increase the entire financial ratio. Interest in reviewing the financial ratios of banks, especially Islamic banks, is the goal to be achieved in this study. Use financial statements as data, and analyze the extent of their performance and influence. For this reason, a quantitative approach and regression analysis are needed. So that research results can be explained properly. The findings in this study suggest that the performance of Islamic banks is relative. Its role is not yet at a significant stage for the economy, and it is still far from conventional banks

This study aims to analyze the profitabilitybetween Islamic Banks and Conventional Banks in Indonesia. This study uses data from 2010 to 2015. The samples used in this study consists of 3 Islamic Banks and 3 Conventional Banks. While the data used is obtained from the financialstatements of each bank stored in the bank website address. Data analysis technique is done by t-test and regression analysis with SPSS 18 application. The estimation results on the t-test showed that the banks used in this study did not have significantmean differences. The result of the regression test shows simultaneously the independent variable of DPK, Equity and Loan only affects the ROA of conventional bank. While partially on conventional banks DPK has a negative effect is not significantto ROA, Equity has a positive effect is not significantto ROA, Loans has a positive effect is not significantto ROA. In Islamic banks DPK has a positive effect is not significantto ROA, Equity has a negative effect is not significantto ROA, Loans has a negative effect is not significantto ROA. From these results can be said that conventional banks more profitablewhen compared to Islamic banks.

ABSTRACT: Even though the majority of the population of Indonesia is Muslim, there is a lack of views about the advantages of Islamic banks, so they prefer to use conventional banking services. The target to be achieved is to find out whether there is a dissimilarity between conventional banks and Islamic banks in their financial performance. And to find out which banking institution is superior based on financial performance ratios. This study uses a comparative descriptive method through a quantitative approach. The sampling technique used is simple random sampling technique. The data used are financial ratios, namely CAR, NPL/NPF, ROA, BOPO, and LDR/FDR. Then the facts are as follows: 1) There is dissimilarity in CAR performance between the two banks, and CAR at conventional banks is superior to Islamic banks. 2) There is dissimilarity in the performance of NPL/NPF between the two banks, and the NPL/NPF of conventional banks is superior to that of Islamic banks. 3) There is no dissimilarity in ROA performance between the two banks, and ROA at conventional banks is superior to Islamic banks. 4) There is no dissimilarity in BOPO performance between the two banks, and BOPO at conventional banks is superior to Islamic banks. 5) There is no dissimilarity in the performance of LDR/FDR between the two banks, and LDR/FDR in Islamic banks is superior to conventional banks.

Keywords: Conventional Banks, Islamic Banks, Financial Performance, Financial Ratios

ABSTRAK: Kendatipun sebagian besar penduduk negara Indonesia beragama Muslim, namun minimnya pandangan mengenai keunggulan bank syariah sehingga mereka lebih memilih memanfaatkan jasa perbankan konvensional. This study's main objective is to investigate equity-based financing and debt-based financing of the profitability of Islamic banking in Indonesia. This research is expected to contribute to the theoretical and practical dimensions. On the conceptual aspect, this study can provide evidence of whether equity-based financing and debt-based financing affect the profitability of Islamic banking. While on the practical dimension, Islamic banks in Indonesia can determine the extent of their profitability and, in turn, the competitiveness of Islamic banks to enable it to be developed in line or even better than conventional banks. The data analysis technique uses panel data regression, which is time series data and cross-section. Next, to estimate the panel data model, which is divided into three, namely: common effect, fixed effect, and random effect. The result of this study that partially equity-based financing does not affect ROE. At the same time, debt-based financing influences the ROE of Islamic banks. Partially equity-based financing and debt-based financing do not affect ROA of Islamic banks. However, it simultaneously shows that the independent variable test results, namely equity-based financing and debt-based financing, have a strong influence on the dependent variable, namely, profitability as measured by ROA and ROE.
