Vygotsky and the Zone of Proximal Development

Thinkers throughout history have surmised that humans exist most fully in communion with others. Learners mimic or model, read or reflect, and listen or lecture within a social context; therefore educational experiences,traditional or technology based,ought not to discount the interplay between shared experience, individual’s attitudes, and relational understandings. The theories of learning that emphasize this kind of interpersonal interaction, the necessity of collaboration and collegiality, a reliance on social reference points, and intentional modeling have had various nomenclatures (Rogoff & Lave, 1984). Vygotsky’s (1978) seminal work is commonly referred to as “social cognition” or “social constructivism.”

This article is a theoretical study of Vygotsky's idea of zone of proximal development. Its aimed at finding out of its relevance to contemporary educational practices that are increasingly complex. Through the description of the background of the emergence of this idea the author concludes that the idea of zone of proximal development is still relevant in modern education, especially to support the educational practices that are friendly toward student’s individual differences at school. Vygotsky's criticism of the practice of levering in schooling is a warning for teachers and education practicioners to consider learning interventions based on individual students' backgrounds especially their mental development differences so that education can be an effective medium to help children's growth and development optimally.

<p>Social Constructivism is elaborated as a theoretical background to support modern pedagogy with mobile technology in the digital age. Studies of theories and framework in terms of mobile pedagogy are combed up to find its connection between language teaching and Social Constructivism. Four theoretical framework of mobile pedagogy are listed in this paper to establish the link with Social Constructivism. The analysis of the Zone of Proximal Development from Social Constructivism theory indicates that mobile pedagogy, integrated with technology, pedagogy and subject content, is student-driven model which needs teacher’s guidance in the level that students cannot scaffold knowledge on their own. Teachers have to update pedagogical concept with enhanced technological knowledge for the demand of education in the digital era.</p>

The continuous process of human recognition has been explained by different schools of psychology. Among them, social constructivism emphasizes the importance of social environment, culture and social interaction with others, in this process. This study aims to highlight the role of using effective techniques and strategies that allow the possibility to study with the help and interaction with others in the pre-school age. The knowledge and application of the scaffolding technique within the Zone of Proximal Development helps accelerate the cognitive development of the child, making the learning process more dynamic and the child more active. The idea of dialog is very important and every child should feel as an integral part of social interaction. The efficient use of these techniques shows an optimization of the child’s achievement. The process of transforming spontaneous concepts into scientific ones, is facilitated and accelerated. It is important for the help to be offered in an individual way, when and where needed. Also, it is required that the educators and teachers be trained for the successful use of these psychological mechanisms.

Based on the hypothesis that reading of fiction followed by aesthetic reflection might be a useful tool towards the development of children's literacy competence in the first years of school, this article constitutes a theoretical basis for such an educational approach. The article is based on a cultural-historical understanding of the work of L.S. Vygotsky and is also inspired by Jerome Bruner's social constructivism. Children's literature, their drawings and play are seen as cultural tools which, when related to Vygotsky’s work (1978a, 1981) allow for the mastery of psychological processes. However, referring to Stetsenko (1999) it is of importance to see the interrelation of three cornerstones in Vygotsky's theoretical universe: social interaction, cultural tools and zone of proximal development (Vygotsky, 1978a, 1978d). These cornerstones and new constructions are a basis for the introduction of an educational approach using literature, dialogue and aesthetic means and processes such as children's storytelling, drawing and play.

The novel of “Akulah Istri Teroris” is the 14th masterpiece from Abidah El Khalieqy as a man letter that raises the theme of terrorist wife life which is always stereotyped by society including for those who wear the veil. It results to them who are still trying in winning their rights as women. This novel is so attractive to be observed because it bases on the reality and most of people still do not it yet so that we can know about the ideology and discourse construction that wants to deliver by the author. This research used a qualitative research with discourse approach of Teun A. Van Dijk. Van Dijk divides it into three dimensions: Textual dimension that examines the structure of text, the view of social cognition, understanding and mental awareness of the author and also social context according to the discourse that grows among of society. The result shows that all the information within the sentences of the novel have coherence and unity so that it creates shape and meaning. In addition, all the information wrap with attractive and simple language style. Discourse analysis that developed by Van Dijk found that this novel becomes one of media for representing the condition of terrorist wife who always get the stigma from various complexities issues but these women show the reader about the fortitude and strength to raise them up from adversity. Novel “Akulah Istri Teroris” merupakan karya ke-14 dari seorang sastrawan Abidah El Khalieqy yang mengangkat tema kehidupan istri teroris yang selalu distereotipkan oleh masyarakat termasuk di dalamnya mereka yang menggunakan cadar. Sehingga mereka terus berusaha untuk merebut hak-haknya sebagai perempuan. Novel ini menarik untuk diteliti karena berdasarkan realitas yang terjadi dan belum banyak diketahui masyarakat  luas, sehingga dari sisi kita dapat mengetahui ideologi dan konstruksi wacana yang ingin disampaikan oleh pengarang.Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian yang bersifat kualitatif dengan pendekatan wacana Teun A. Van Dijk. Van Dijk membaginya kedalam tiga dimensi, yaitu dimensi teks yakni meneliti struktur dalam teks, kognisi sosial yang merupakan pandangan, pemahama dan kesadaran mental pengarang, dan konteks sosial yakni terkait wacana yang berkembang dalam masyarakat.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa setiap informasi dalam kalimat pada novel “Akulah Istri Teroris” adalah saling berhubungan dan memiliki unsur-unsur koherensi sehingga terbentuklah struktur wacana berupa bentuk dan makna. Selain itu informasi dikemas dalam gaya bahasa yang menarik dan sederhana. Tokoh digambarkan memiliki karakter yang kuat. Analisis wacana yang dikembangkan Van Dijk menemukan informasi bahwa novel “Akulah Istri Teroris” merupakan salah satu media untuk merepresentasikan tentang keadaan istri teroris yang selalu mendapat stigmatisasi dari berbagai rumitnya permasalahan yang terjadi, namun para perempuan ini memiliki ketegaran dan kekuatan untuk bangkit dari keterpurukan.

The composition of English language learning tools for middle schools has often not utilized the instrctional technology approach and only used approaches related to the educational discipline of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). English language learning materials in several middle schools in East Java also do not provide audio media-based activities for practice of listening skills. This article is the research results of the Borg & Gall research and development model which aimed to develop, validate, and test textual learning materials aided by audio recordings to develop the English-language competency of middle school students. The results of the development showed that audio media was proven to be e ectively capable as sca olds that play a role as learning aids. Audio media provides sound input that guides students to imitate the audio with accurate pronunciation. In addition, audio media input can also be comprehensible for students in accordance with the Input Hypothesis Theory of Krashen that states that those learning languages at “level i” should obtain comprehensible input at “level i + 1” or slightly higher than the current level, and this theory of Krashen is identical to the zone of proximal development (ZPD) theory of Vygotsky. This development also resulted in a learning design which applied the audio lingual communicative (ALC) strategy which is eclectic in its combination of two language learning strategies, which are the audio lingual method with communicative language teaching (CLT). The application of this method was appropriate with the Indonesian classroom context where the number of students in a classroom is on average 40 pupils or more. AbstrakPengembangan bahan ajar Bahasa Inggris untuk sekolah menengah pertama selama ini sering kali tidak menggunakan pendekatan teknologi pembelajaran dan hanya menggunakan pendekatan disiplin ilmu pendidikan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing atau teaching English as a foreign language/TEFL. Selain bahan ajar bahasa Inggris di beberapa sekolah menengah pertama di Jawa Timur tidak menyediakan bahan penyerta berupa media audio untuk latihan keterampilan menyimak (listening). Penelitian ini adalah penelitian pengembangan (R&D) model Borg & Gall yang bertujuan untuk mengembangan, memvalidasi, dan menguji bahan ajar tekstual berbantuan rekaman audio untuk meningkatkan kompetensi bahasa Inggris siswa sekolah menengah pertama. Hasil pengembangan ini menunjukkan bahwa media audio telah terbukti mampu secara efektif menjadi sca olds yang berperan sebagai bantuan belajar. Media audio menyediakan input suara yang memandu siswa menirukan audio dengan akurasi pelafalan yang tepat. Selain itu, input dari media audio dapat dipahami (comprehensible) bagi siswa, sesuai dengan Input Hyphothesis Theory Krashen yang menyatakan bahwa mereka yang belajar bahasa yang berada pada “tingkat i” seharusnya memperoleh comprehensible input pada “tingkat i + 1” atau sedikit lebih tinggi dari tingkat ia berada yang identik dengan teori zone of proximal development (ZPD) yang dikembangkan Vygotsky. Pengem- bangan ini juga menghasilkan desain pembelajaran yang menerapkan strategi audio lingual communicative (ALC) yang bersifat eklektik yang memadukan dua pendekatan pembelajaran bahasa, yaitu audio lingual method dengan communicative language teaching (CLT). Penerapan metode ini sesuai dengan konteks kelas Indonesia dengan jumlah siswa rata-rata 40 orang atau lebih dalam satu kelas. ia dengan jumlah siswa rata-rata 40 orang atau lebih dalam satu kelas.

<p><em>Media bias will always be an interesting topic to be examined. Media plays some important roles in society. One of its roles is building public opinions. In this case, media has been assumed to be biased as it might take some advantages from its position. This study aims at investigating The Jakarta Post’s bias towards the environmental preservation issues (an ecolinguistic study). The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive method by applying Van Dijk’s model of critical discourse analysis. This research model does not only analyze the aspect of text structure but also social cognition and social context. The object for this study is the news texts taken from The Jakarta Post Online. The result of the study showed that The Jakarta Post showed its bias towards environmental preservation issues by positioning itself as a pro’s side . In the text structure level, its bias can be identified with the way it chose the theme, topics, schemes and lexical choices which were in accordance with environmental ethics principles. In the social cognition level, its bias can be identified with the nature of the knowledge involved in showing its position in accordance with environmental preservation mission. In the social context level, its bias can be identified with the social values reflected from the news and certain group domination involved in the Jakarta Post’s news report which was in accordance with pro-environmental preservation. Generally, The Jakarta Post showed its progressive attitude or tendency to the change by intensely discussing environmental issues which implied the ideas of improving the way people should preserve their environment.</em></p><p> </p><p><em>Keberpihakan media akan selalu menjadi bahan yang menarik untuk diteliti. Media memainkan peran penting dalam masyarakat. Salah satu peran media adalah membangun opini publik. Dalam hal ini, media telah diasumsikan memiliki keberpihakan karena media dapat mengambil keuntungan dari posisinya tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat keberpihakan The Jakarta Post terhadap isu pelestarian lingkungan hidup (sebuah kajian ekolinguistik). Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan analisis wacana kritis model Van Dijk. Model penelitian ini tidak hanya menganalisis aspek struktur teks, melainkan juga kognisi sosial dan konteks sosial. Objek penelitian ini adalah teks berita yang diambil dari media berita online The Jakarta Post. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa The Jakarta Post menunjukkan keberpihakannya terhadap isu pelestarian lingkungan hidup dengan meposisikan dirinya sebagai pihak yang mendukung. Dalam tataran struktur teks, keberpihakannya dapat diidentifikasi dari tema, topik, skema wacana dan pilihan kata yang digunakan yang sesuai dengan prinsip-prinsip etika lingkungan. Dalam tataran kognisi sosial, keberpihakannya dapat diidentifikasi dari sifat pengetahuan yang dilibatkan yang menunjukkan posisinya yang sejalan dengan misi pelestarian lingkungan hidup. Dalam tataran konteks sosial, keberpihakannya dapat diidentifikasi dari nilai-nilai sosial yang tercermin dari berita dan dominasi kelompok yang dilibatkan dalam pelaporan berita yang ditulis The Jakarta Post yang berada pada posisi pro-pelestarian lingkungan hidup. Secara umum, The Jakarta Post menunjukkan sikap progresif atau cenderung kepada perubahan dengan mengulas secara intens isu-isu pelestarian lingkungan hidup yang secara tersirat menyarankan perlu adanya peningkatan terhadap upaya-upaya pelestarian lingkungan hidup.</em><em></em></p>

This chapter surveys how behavior, affect, and cognition with respect to parenting and moral development have been conceptualized over time. It moves to a discussion of domains of socialization; that is, different contexts in which socialization occurs and where different mechanisms operate. Domains include protection where the child is experiencing negative affect, reciprocity where there is an exchange of favors, group participation or learning through observing others and engaging with them in positive action, guided learning where values are taught in the child’s zone of proximal development, and control where values are learned through discipline and reward. Research using narratives of young adults about value-learning events suggests that inhibition of antisocial behavior is more likely learned in the control domain, and prosocial behavior more likely in the group participation domain. Internalization of values, measured by narrative meaningfulness, is most likely in the group participation domain.

Educational intervention has been narrated for a long time as a battle between two agentive subjects, educators and students. In this article, we introduce two interrelating concepts of SHI (势 in Chinese) and SHUN SHI (顺势 in Chinese) from Chinese philosophy into psychology to provide an alternative perspective to understand students’ development and educational intervention. The concept of SHI sheds light on the propensity of open system’s becoming process toward the future underlying system’s present configuration derived from system’s historical interaction with its environment. SHUN SHI is to grasp the opportunity of SHI evolving into being prominent and to transform the system by alertly following its unfolding process. Understanding and applying SHI and SHUN SHI in the area of developmental and educational psychology is discussed and clarified based on a comparison with the dynamic system theory and zone of proximal development. An empirical research is also provided to respond to the method challenge posed by the two concepts.
