We examine the implications of virtual customer environments for supporting the innovation process. By building on the literature of knowledge brokers, we introduce the concept of virtual knowledge brokers—actors who leverage the internet to support third parties’ innovation activities. These actors enable firms to extend their reach in engaging with customers and they also allow firms to have a richer dialogue with customers because of their perceived neutrality. Consequently, virtual knowledge brokers help firms to complement the knowledge they can acquire through traditional physical and virtual channels for customer interaction. We highlight the capabilities and contributions of virtual knowledge brokers, and we discuss the implications of these entities for theory and practice in the management of innovation.

Currently, one of the main factors of the growth of the country's national economy is scientific and technological progress, and, consequently, innovative activities. The management of innovation processes requires at the federal and regional level the knowledge of the regularities, which is why the state regulation of innovation is gaining an increasing importance. To date, the economy of the Russian Federation is dependent on scientific achievements and technological breakthroughs. The paper discusses methods of direct economic regulation of innovation activities in the investment and construction sector. The proposed method of allocating budget funds to support innovations in the regions of the Russian Federation has a positive effect on increasing the innovation attractiveness of the region and business structures.

The article presents the results of research of separate aspects of the process of complex assessment of the strategic management level of the enterprise innovative development on the basis of the methodology of multi-purpose analysis of the situations of making managerial decisions in conditions of uncertainty, conflict and risk. An appropriate system of generalized and partial indicators of the functioning of the enterprise, which influence the level of its innovation development, is formed. It includes: 1) a subsystem of the indicators of a generalized assessment of the state of organizational, technical and economic development of the enterprise; 2) a subsystem of effective quality indicators for assessing the level of strategic management of innovative development of the enterprise. In order to carry out the analysis of the factors impact on the results of the innovation activity of the enterprise, a modified aggregate rating criterion is chosen. It is based on the average geometric value of the detailed indicators. The above-mentioned facts allow obtaining integrated assessments of the level of strategic management of innovative development of the enterprise by reducing the negative impact of the levelling of individual indicators, the values of which fall out of the general trend of the studied processes. It is noted that the property of taking into account the antagonism of the economic environment is inherent to the recommended for use in the process of integrated assessment of the level of strategic management of innovative development of the enterprise by the average geometric meanings of the detailed indicators that characterize the situation of making innovative decisions. Thus, to some extent, it is possible to take into account the continuous overall impact of the competitive environment of the enterprise. In order to carry out an in-depth study of assessments of the level of strategic management of innovation development and innovative activity of the enterprise as a whole, a structural diagram of construction of a functional of estimating the integral indicator of the formalized situation of making innovative decisions is formed. The basic scheme of estimation of the level of strategic management of innovation development of the enterprise is developed. According to this scheme, we have determined the key stages of the research. They are the monitoring of key partial performance indicators of an enterprise, which affect the final results of innovation activity; the assessment of the organizational and technical level of development of productive forces of the enterprise; the integral assessment of the level of security and effectiveness of strategic management of innovation activities; the integrated assessment of the level of effectiveness of strategic management of innovative development of the enterprise. The indicator "stock of financial strength" has been determined as a priority indicator in assessing the situation of the adoption of innovative solutions.

Purpose Creativity is often referred to as a seedbed of innovation. As such it holds the key to better performance and the competitiveness of firms. To better understand how creativity influences birth and commercialization of innovations and productive efficiency of firms the paper investigates how hiring of employees with different creative skills impacts innovation process and productivity. The purpose of this paper is to determine the role of creativity in innovation behavior and productive efficiency of firms. Design/methodology/approach Theoretical framework of the paper rests on pillars of evolutionary, Schumpeterian and endogenous growth literature contributions to the economics of innovation. The multi-stage analytical framework is applied to examine contribution of creativity to the decision of firms to innovate, investment in innovation activities, commercialization of innovations and firm efficiency. The econometric techniques of generalized tobit and simultaneous equations framework are applied to confidential data from the UK Innovation Survey in 2010-2012 period. Findings The investigation broadens our understanding of factors and forces that shape innovation process and improve productive efficiency of firms. It provides empirical evidence on an impact of the effectiveness of innovation process on the productivity of firms. The results reveal that creative skills contribute to the generation of novel ideas and investment in research and development but the ability to meet customer requirements draws from other organizational skills such as marketing or organizational innovations. Differences are revealed among economic sectors with respect to the forces driving the innovation process. Research limitations/implications Further research will be needed to investigate cross-country differences in management of creativity and its contribution to the innovation process and productivity. The limited availability of data on creativity and innovation activities of firms presents the most important limitation in this sense. The framework set by this paper can serve as direction for further investigations. Practical implications The results provide implications to managers regarding the management of innovation process. First, the study reveals how creative potential of employees can be optimally exploited in different stages of innovation process. Second, the research highlights number of other factors relevant in this process from the utilization of information, subsidies and the general management of human resources. Finally, the results suggest that sectoral heterogeneity should be taken into account in management of innovation activities of individual firms. Originality/value While the impact of creativity on innovation has been addressed previously, this paper is one of first attempts to examine the linkages between management of creativity, effectiveness of innovation process and productive efficiency of firms within a single framework. One of reasons for this is the fact that it relies on the confidential dataset of firms not easily accessible to researchers.

Within the framework of analysis of innovative processes of an enterprise, the role of innovative activity as an indicator of effective management becomes obvious. The authors listed the main economic principles that affect innovation activity in general, briefly described them, then analyzed the dependence of innovation activity on various factors and proposed several ways to classify them. The possibility of changing the internal content and the transition of factors from one category to another was noted, and typical examples were given. In more detail, the key factors that have a major impact on the management of innovation activities, in particular the fourth industrial revolution, were considered. The authors showed the historical heritability of industrial revolutions from the first to the fourth (the introduction of the steam engine (the essence of the beginning of labor automation) develops into conveyor production, which with the next stage is transferred to the monitoring and full control of information systems with elements of artificial intelligence), demonstrated the development of features characteristic of sequential mechanization and automation. Based on the available results of the digital revolution and the existing promising developments, the authors conducted a SWOT analysis of the likely factors of innovation activity arising from the onset of Industry 4.0. In order to maintain high innovation activity, they justified the need to develop an action plan in case of the most likely threats.
