At the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the University of Ibadan, famous historian, Professor Bọlanle Awẹ was conferred with a well-deserved honorary doctorate degree. For both Professor Awẹ and even Nigeria’s premier university, this great honor is a fitting tribute to mark the anniversary of the institution of learning that has been central to the intellectual history of Nigeria. The University of Ibadan has done well to select Professor Awẹ for this honor. Her earnestness and intelligence are beyond doubts. There is no gainsaying disputing her warmth, her magnetism. I have known her since the 1970s—she remains consistent in the exhibition of positive values, in the promotion of Yoruba culture, and the advancement of the scholarly enterprise.

It is a great honor to participate as a guest editor for the inaugural issue of the Journal of Spine Practice, which is affiliated with the Saudi Spine Society. I have closely watched the early years of the relatively young Saudi Spine Society, and have been truly amazed by the growth and the multiple focused initiatives that the society has created. As I watch the tremendous growth of the Saudi Spine Society, I am pondering the purpose of any given spine society in the clinical practice of spine surgeons in any specific region, country, city, spine group, or individual practice. What follows are some personal thoughts on the relationship of spine societies with clinical practice. To read the full text, please download the PDF or view the article HTML.

Abstract Muslim history is animated with examples of women who mastered the art of ḥadīth (Prophetic traditions) sciences and besides this, they had also displayed their expertise in the field of Al-Jarḥ wa Taʿdīl (Validation and Impugnment) of Prophetic traditions. The science of Al-Jarḥ wa Taʿdīl is a very subtle and sensitive branch of Usūl al ḥadīth (the science of ḥadīth) which deals with acceptance or rejection of Prophetic narrations, based on the trustworthiness and weaknesses of ḥadīth narrator. Since the beginning of Islamic history, Muslim women have constantly taken a prominent part in narration, preservation, and memorization of ḥadīth, these efforts continued for a long time and there were numerous distinguished female scholars of ḥadīth who were treated with great honor. This study aims to investigate the contribution of these muḥaddithāt (female scholars of ḥadīth) in ḥadīth narration and specifically the significant role of Aisha (R.A.) in the field of Al-Jarḥ wa Taʿdīl. This study also aims to put forth the contribution of muḥaddithāt in ḥadīth narration during the early centuries of Islam parallel to their role in Al-Jarḥ and Taʿdīl of narrators. Furthermore, this study would be a humble effort to highlight the intellectual contributions of female Muslim scholars of ḥadīth to encourage women of today to carry this legacy forward by mastering this scholarly endeavour and continue the legacy of their pious predecessors.

In 2012, the US Supreme Court ruled, for the first time in its history, that lies and falsehoods are protected by the US Constitution. In the relevant case, a politician said that he had won the Congressional Medal of Honor, which was a palpable lie. Referring to the risks that would come from an Orwellian Ministry of Truth, the Court ruled that the government could not punish that lie. The Court was quite right to say that some false statements are protected by the Constitution, but its decision was wrong, even preposterous. A lie is worse than an innocent mistake, or even a negligent one, and if a politician says that he obtained a great honor, he imposes real harm on the public. The Court’s decision seems especially ill-considered in light of the nature and power of modern social media. It should not be read to say that falsehoods and lies are generally protected by the Constitution.
