AbstractBrentano’s account of intentionality has often been traced back to its scholastic sources. This is justified by his claim that objects of thought have a specific mode of being—namely, “intentional inexistence” (intentionale Inexistenz)—and that mental acts have an “intentional relation” (intentionale Beziehung) to these objects. These technical terms in Brentano do indeed recall the medieval notions of esse intentionale, which is a mode of being, and of intentio, which is a “tending towards” (tendere in) of mental acts. However, within the lexical family of intentio there is another distinction that plays an important role in medieval philosophy—namely, the distinction between first and second intentions (intentio prima and intentio secunda), which are, roughly speaking, concepts of things and concepts of concepts respectively. What is less well-known is that Brentano explicitly borrowed this distinction as well, and used it in his account of intentionality. This paper explores this little-known chapter in the scholastic-Austrian history of intentionality by evaluating both the historical accuracy and the philosophical significance of Brentano’s borrowing of the scholastic distinction between first and second intentions.

Transnational Feminist Itineraries brings together scholars and activists from multiple continents to demonstrate the ongoing importance of transnational feminist theory in challenging neoliberal globalization and the rise of authoritarian nationalisms around the world. The contributors illuminate transnational feminism's unique constellation of elements: its specific mode of thinking across scales, its historical understanding of identity categories, and its expansive imagining of solidarity based on difference rather than similarity. Contesting the idea that transnational feminism works in opposition to other approaches—especially intersectional and decolonial feminisms—this volume instead argues for their complementarity. Throughout, the contributors call for reaching across social, ideological, and geographical boundaries to better confront the growing reach of nationalism, authoritarianism, and religious and economic fundamentalism. This introductory chapter outlines the aims of Resonant Recoveries as well as the book’s theoretical and methodological apparatuses. In introducing one of the central arguments of this book—that music came to operate as a corporeal technology of consolation in interwar France—the introduction provides an overview of how late nineteenth- through mid-twentieth-century French artistic, psychological, sociological, and philosophical discourse framed the body as a privileged site for the production and development of knowledge about oneself and the world. In so doing, this introduction provides the socio-historical background for the historical and musical analysis that follows in subsequent chapters while also advocating a specific mode of interdisciplinary research that investigates how music has historically been conceived as a therapeutic, corporeal medium.

Chapter 2—which may be read before chapter 1, if that is the preference of the reader—is the book’s first illustration of Sonata Theory in practice. It provides a close reading of the first movement of Mozart’s Piano Sonata in B-flat, K. 333, that simultaneously presents an introduction to the theory’s specific mode of analysis and its most central concepts and terms. Not least of its concerns are its urgings that the listener/analyst is a co-creator of the work’s meaning (resulting ultimately in a responsible hermeneutic reading): Sonata Theory analysis seeks to be an aesthetically receptive, interactive dialogue with an individual work. Even in its most language-technical moments, it tries to integrate methodical observation with a personal sensitivity to the affective contours and colors of music as music. Two other features of the book are also introduced here: a historical/contextual backdrop for the work under consideration (including dating, original purpose, and aesthetic); and the inclusion of other modes of analytical practice to suggest their compatibility with Sonata Theory.

The article discusses the specific mode of existence of values – balancing or op­timization when it comes to deontological values. The authors using examples of values such as the principles of law and human rights, the rules of balancing are analyzed, which, according to G. Hart's classification, are secondary norms. The critical issue for the legal balancing procedure is the relationship between legal reality and values as such. Are the constitutional and legal values set by the Basic Law (Constitution), or do they objectively exist in society as a general (pre-constitutional) order of values? Should the Basic Law be confined to its own text and remain value-neutral in this sense? Are legal values purely deonto­logical, or can they be related to utilitarian goals and interests? The second part of the article explores the value of balancing as one of the methods for resolving the most complex legal conflicts. The well-known dispute between J. Habermas and R. Alexy about the admissibility of balancing of human rights demonstrates how complex and philosophically rich the legal balancing procedure is. Based on Luhmann’s concept of the cognitive openness of law, at the end of the article, the authors substantiate their own position on the role of values in modern justice.

In 1790–1793 Nikolai Strakhov publishes The Satirical Bulletin (1790–1792), A Handbook for Winter Moscow Visitors (1791), The Correspondence of Fashion and The Lamentations of Fashion over the Expulsion of Fashionable and Expensive Goods (1793). The paper shows that The Fashionable Book by the French writer Louis-Antoine Caraccioli, published in Russian translation in 1789, could have been one of their literary sources. All the Strakhov’s works mentioned above share a common topic with the book by Caraccioli: fashion. In A Handbook, The Correspondence and The Lamentations of Fashion, as well as in The Fashionable Book, fashion is the only topic, while in the journal The Satirical Bulletin it is central. Perhaps Caraccioli’s satire suggests to Strakhov the very idea of a full-length book dealing entirely with the subject of fashion, the idea the writer develops in his A Handbook and The Correspondence. A Handbook shares one more important feature with its probable French inspiration: a specific mode of communication with the readers. Both books are addressed to fops, who are obsessed with fashion, as if aimed at attracting their attention. In both books fops are given advice characterizing the behavior that is usual in high society. While such recommendations constitute a minor part of Caraccioli’s satire, they predominate in A Handbook. Obviously, the appeal to fops is, in fact, ironic; the advice given to them should not be taken at face value. In both books fashion is the object of satire. Strakhov’s acquaintance with the Russian translation of Caraccioli’s book may be supposed for the reason that this translation is printed by N. Novikov, who at the time, i. e. in the second half of the 1780s, collaborates with Strakhov, publishing his translations of foreign literature. The fact that Strakhov’s works appear soon after the Russian translation of The Fashionable Book serves as an additional argument in favor of their connection.

Based on this drug’s specific mode of action we propose a benefit/risk assessment on a case-by-case basis with individual considerations, rather than a generic contra-indication.
