Molecular paleobiology provides a promising avenue to merge data from deep time, molecular biology and genomics, gaining insights into the evolutionary process at multiple levels. The echinoderm skeleton is a model for molecular paleobioloogical studies. I begin with an overview of the skeletogenic process in echinoderms, as well as a discussion of what gene regulatory networks are, and why they are of interest to paleobiologists. I then highlight recent advances in the evolution of the echinoderm skeleton from both paleobiological and molecular/functional genomic perspectives, highlighting examples where diverse approaches provide complementary insight and discussing potential of this field of research.

lynch syndrome (LS) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder with incomplete penetration caused by a germline mutation in one of the genes of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) mismatch repair system (MMR) namely: mutL homolog 1 (MLH1), mutS homolog 2 (MSH2), mutS homolog 6 (MHS6), post-meiotic segregation increased 1 homolog 2 (PMS2) or the EpCAM (Epithelial CellAdhesionMolecule) gene, which causes the inactivation of MSH2. Patients with this syndrome have a high relative risk of developing cancers at a young age, led by colorectal cancer (CRC) and endometrial cancer in females. The diagnosis is suspected when the patient’s personal and family history meets the Amsterdam or Bethesda criteria. It is guided by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and/or molecular biology that show loss of expression of one or more proteins of the MMR system and microsatellite instability on tumor DNA. In case of positive IHC and/or molecular biology, the patient should be referred to an oncogenetic consultation for a definitive diagnosis. We present the case of a 49-year-old patient who presented an anaemic syndrome in metrorrhagia. After a clinical, imaging, biological and anatomopathological examination, the diagnosis of LS was made.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as a result of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, since December 2019, is a major health problem and concern worldwide. The pandemic has impacted various fields, from the social to the development of health science and technology. The virus has been mutating and thus producing several new variants, rushing research in the field of molecular biology to develop rapidly to overcome the problems that occur. Vaccine clinical studies are developing promptly with the aim of obtaining vaccines that are effective in suppressing the spread of the virus; however, the development of viral mutations raises concerns about the decreasing effectiveness of the resulting vaccine, which also results in the need for more in-depth studies. There have been 330 vaccines developed, including 136 clinical developments and 194 pre-clinical developments. The SARS-CoV-2 variant continues to evolve today, and it poses a challenge in testing the effectiveness of existing vaccines. This is a narrative review describing the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, development of vaccine platforms, identification of concerning mutations and virus variants in various countries of the world, and real-world monitoring of post-vaccination effectiveness and surveillance.

The Tabula Gallus is a proposed project that aims to create a map of every cell type in the chicken body and chick embryos. Chickens (Gallus gallus) are one of the most recognized model animals that recapitulate the development and physiology of mammals. The Tabula Gallus will generate a compendium of single-cell transcriptome data from Gallus gallus, characterize each cell type, and provide tools for the study of the biology of this species, similar to other ongoing cell atlas projects (Tabula Muris and Tabula Sapiens/Human Cell Atlas for mice and humans, respectively). The Tabula Gallus will potentially become an international collaboration between many researchers. This project will be useful for the basic scientific study of Gallus gallus and other birds (e.g., cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, neuroscience, physiology, oncology, virology, behavior, ecology, and evolution). It will eventually be beneficial for a better understanding of human health and diseases.
