Nanozymes are nanomaterials which exhibit artificial enzymatic activities and are considered as alternatives to natural enzymes. They are characterized by good catalytic activity and high stability, as well as ease and low cost of preparation. In this study, the mimetics of laccase or “nanolaccases” (NLacs) were synthesized by a simple method of chemical reduction of transition metal salts. The NLacs were tested for their catalytic activity in solution and on the electrode surface. The most effective NLacs, namely nAuCePt and nPtFe, were found to possess excellent laccase-like activities capable of oxidizing the endocrine hormone adrenaline (AD). These NLacs were characterized in detail and used for the development of amperometric sensors for AD determination. The amperometric sensors containing the best NLacs, as well as a natural fungal laccase, were constructed. The most effective nAuCePt-containing sensor had good specificity in relation to AD and improved analytical characteristics. It possessed a 384-fold higher sensitivity than adrenaline (230,137 A·M−1·m−2), a 64-fold lower limit of detection (0.025 µM), and a broader linear range (0.085–45 µM) in comparison with the sensor based on natural laccase. The constructed nAuCePt-containing sensor was successfully used for AD analysis in pharmaceutical formulation.

Considering economic and environmental impacts, catalytic biomass conversion to valuable compounds has attracted more and more attention. Of particular interest is furfural, a versatile biorefinery platform molecule used as a feedstock for the production of fuels and fine chemicals. In this study, the Cr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-101 were modified by chlorosulfonic acid, and MIL-101 was changed into a hierarchical MOF structure with smaller particles and lower particle crystallinity by CTAB, which significantly improved the acidic sites of the MOFs. The original and modified MIL-101(Cr) catalysts were characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM, and FT-IR. The effects of different catalysts, reaction temperature, catalyst amount, and alcohol type on the reaction were studied. Under the action of the MOFs catalyst, a new mild route for the condensation of furfural with various alkyl alcohols to the biofuel molecules (acetals) was proposed. The conversion route includes the conversion of furfural up to 91% yield of acetal could be obtained within 1 h solvent-free and in room-temperature reaction conditions. The sulfonic acid-functionalized MIL-101(Cr) is easy to recover and reuse, and can still maintain good catalytic activity after ten runs.

Concerns have been increased regarding the existence of pollutants in environmental water resources and their risks to the ecosystem and human society. TiO2 photocatalyst is considered as an effective photocatalyst to remove the pollutants. Herein, the mesoporous TiO2-SBA-15 was prepared using the rice husk extract as the silica source. The fabricated nanocomposites were characterized using FTIR, small and wide angle XRD, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis, BET surface area analysis, and HRTEM. The photocatalytic efficiency of the composites for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) has been evaluated under UV irradiation. Interestingly, due to the excellent dispersion of TiO2 on the wall of SBA-15 and good hydrophilicity, the nanocomposites displayed a good catalytic activity. The higher photodegradation performance was achieved by the composite containing 10 wt% TiO2 by which the MB was fully degraded within 15-20 min of irradiation. Besides, TiO2-SBA-15 could effectively inhibit the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. These results offer a practical and economic approach in the environmental management industries.

An ultrasensitive enzyme-free glucose sensor was facilely prepared by electrodepositing three-dimensional dendritic Cu on a room temperature exfoliated graphite-derived film (RTEG-F). An excellent electrocatalytic performance was demonstrated for glucose by using Cu/RTEG-F as an electrode. In terms of the high conductivity of RTEG-F and the good catalytic activity of the dendritic Cu structures, the sensor demonstrates high sensitivities of 23.237 mA/mM/cm2, R2 = 0.990, and 10.098 mA/mM/cm2, R2 = 0.999, corresponding to the concentration of glucose ranging from 0.025 mM to 1.0 mM and 1.0 mM to 2.7 mM, respectively, and the detection limit is 0.68 μM. In addition, the Cu/RTEG-F electrode demonstrates excellent anti-interference to interfering species and a high stability. Our work provides a new idea for the preparation of high-performance electrochemical enzyme-free glucose sensor.

Palladium-modified Co-ZnAland Cu-ZnAl materials were used and found active for the catalytic oxidation of propene and propane. According to the results obtained by XRD, TPR and XPS, the zinc aluminate-supported phases are oxide phases, Co3O4, CuO and PdOx for Co-ZnAl, Cu-ZnAl and Pd-ZnAl catalysts, respectively. These reducible oxide species present good catalytic activity for the oxidation reactions. The addition of palladium to Co-ZnAl or Cu-ZnAl samples promoted the reducibility of the system and, consequently, produced a synergic effect which enhanced the activity for the propene oxidation. The PdCo-ZnAl sample was the most active and exhibited highly dispersed PdOx particles and surface structural defects. In addition, it exhibited good catalytic stability. The H2 pre-treated PdCu-ZnAl, PdCo-ZnAl and Pd-ZnAl samples showed higher activity than the original oxide catalysts, evidencing the important role of the oxidation state of the species, mainly of the palladium species, on the catalytic activity for the propene combustion. The synergic effect between metal transition oxides and PdOx could not be observed for the propane oxidation.

Series of WO3/MeO2(Me: Zr, Ti, Si) oxides were synthesized by impregnationmethod with 1:9 atomic ration of W:Me.The oxides were characterized by various techniques such as XRD, IR. The XRD patterns showed the crystalline structure of ZrO2, TiO2,WO3 and amorphous of SiO2. They were formed in tetragonal, anatase, monoclinic phase structure. All oxide and mixed oxides were estimated its catalytic activity through fructose conversion into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in DMSO solvent. The results indicated that all mixed oxides owned good catalytic activity for the reaction in comparison with case of only presence DMSO solvent. Especially, The oxide WO3/ZrO2 showed the best HMF yield, 81,6%, at experimental conditions. This property could be due to the well dispersionand acidity of nano cluster WO3 on the surface s of oxides MeO2.

Methanol synthesis from carbon dioxide (CO2) may contribute to carbon capture and utilization, energy fluctuation control and the availability of CO2-neutral fuels. However, methanol synthesis is challenging due to the stringent thermodynamics. Several catalysts mainly based on the carrier material Al2O3 have been investigated. Few results on MgO as carrier material have been published. The focus of this study is the carrier material MgO. The caustic properties of MgO depend on the caustification/sintering temperature. This paper presents the first results of the activity of a Cu/MgO catalyst for the low calcining temperature of 823 K. For the chosen calcining conditions, MgO is highly active with respect to its CO2 adsorption capacity. The Cu/MgO catalyst showed good catalytic activity in CO2 hydrogenation with a high selectivity for methanol. In repeated cycles of reactant consumption and product condensation followed by reactant re-dosing, an overall relative conversion of CO2 of 76% and an overall selectivity for methanol of 59% was obtained. The maximum selectivity for methanol in a single cycle was 88%.

The adsorption and activation of both CO2 and methanol are mainly affected by the distance of the Lewis acid site, Zr4+, and Lewis base, Zr4+/O2−, of the Zr-based catalysts. In this paper, Zr-incorporated SBA-15 (Zr-SBA-15) and Zr-grafted SBA-15 (Zr/SBA-15) catalysts were prepared with different Zr environments, and were analyzed with N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectra, and XPS. It was proposed that Zr-SBA-15 catalyst with Si-O-Zr-OH and Zr-O-Si-OH structure exhibited non-adjacent sites between Zr4+ and Zr4+/O2−, while Zr/SBA-15 catalyst with Zr-O-Zr-OH structure showed neighboring sites between Zr4+ and Zr4+/O2−. Furthermore, the Zr/SBA-15 catalyst exhibited good catalytic activity, while no DMC was detected over the Zr-SBA-15 catalyst at the same reaction conditions. For combined in situ infrared and catalytic performance, it was indicated that the methanol and CO2 could be activated to form DMC, only when the Zr4+ and Zr4+/O2− sites existed and were adjacent to each other in the Zr-O-Zr-OH of Zr/SBA-15 catalyst.
