The method of reconstruction and investigation of the pre-landslide condition of the tragic landslide «Ak-Kain» of the Northern Tien Shan is proposed. A model and a finite element algorithm for studying the stress-strain state (VAT) of soil sediments of an obliquely layered structure are briefly presented. The established zones and places of accumulation of dangerous stress concentrations along the inclined layer that led to the tragedy are shown. The plots show the found other areas of hazardous stress concentrations prone to destruction.

Abstract We assessed the adaptive potential of two rare decorative species listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan : Tulipa tarda Stapf (Liliaceae) and Gymnospermium altaicum (Pall.) Spach (Berberidaceae) by studying the morphological variability of generative individuals of the species. Our studies were carried out in natural populations in the Northern Tien Shan and introduced populations of the botanical garden and urban green areas of Almaty. These species showed a high degree of adaptation under the conditions of the introduction. Moreover, Gymnospermium altaicum , accidentally introduced into the urban green area of Bukhar Zhyrau Boulevard (Almaty), had formed a naturalized population that persisted for more than 8 years. The naturalized population of Tulipa tarda in the botanical garden (Almaty), introduced more than 20 years ago by one of the authors of this article, has been in existence even longer. In the latter case, individuals of seed origin showed higher adaptive capabilities than those transferred by the bulbs of generative plants.

Abstract The problem of the relationship between strong magnetic swarms caused by solar flares and variations in seismicity is considered. The data on the temporal dependences of the parameters of seismic noise (average level, and standard deviation, RMS) recorded by the stations of the KNET seismic network have been used as the output data of monitoring the territory of the Bishkek geodynamic proving ground (Northern Tien Shan). The signatures of the influence of a magnetic swarm that occurred after an ultra-strong solar flare on September 6, 2017 have been established. The results obtained on the increase in seismic noise after this super-strong eruptive event are consistent with the results of studies on the influence of magnetic swarms on changes in regional seismicity.

Abstract The article presents the results of electromagnetic monitoring and geomagnetic observation during increased seismic activity in eastern part of Bishkek geodynamic range (Northern Tien-Shan) in 2017. It includes brief description of seismic conditions of the territory being researched, as well as analyses of the correlation between changes in geophysical field parameters and the earthquakes.

Abstract The relationship between space weather and earthquakes occurring in seismically active areas with the seismo-electromagnetic satellite CSES-01 data are observed. The study assumes the presence of possible ionospheric precursors of strong earthquakes. The sets of measuring instruments of the satellite and data are considered. Subsequently, to prove the non-random nature of the space weather effects, the results of ground-based geomagnetic or electromagnetic observations should be used, for example, magnetotelluric soundings (MTS). Stationary and regime points of the MTS network of the Research Station RAS in Bishkek (RS RAS) are suitable for these purposes in the Northern Tien Shan. The MTS data are presented in the form of hourly frequency-time series with system rotation from 0° to 180°. To obtain information on earthquakes, it is proposed to use data from the NEIC or ISC seismic catalog, since they aggregate data from regional catalogs, including the KNET seismological network maintained by the RS RAS. It is concluded that it is necessary to select the CSES-01 trajectories and times of flight over the territory of Kyrgyzstan and download the electric field detector (EFD) data. The results of comparing satellite and ground-based observations can be used in future technologies for short-term earthquake prediction.

The purpose of the article is an objective classification of the mountain passes of the Northern Tien Shan, collecting maximum information about them, which will ensure maximum safety for participants of mountain hiking trips. Systematic work on the classification of mountain passes of the USSR began immediately after the formation of tourism as a sport. By 1990, more than 4 thousand passes were classified. After the collapse of the USSR, tourists began to intensively make sports trips to the mountainous regions of far abroad. By 2001 (the year of the release of the new “ List...”), 5 thousand passes had already been classified. In 2020–2021. a new stage of updating the “List of high mountain passes....” has begun. Since Soviet times, the author has been responsible for the implementation of this work on the passes of the Northern Tien Shan and the Dzungarian Alatau. Therefore, it was in these mountainousareas that intensive work was carried out by the Research Institute of Tourism of the University “Turan” (Almaty, Kazakhstan), which the author has been leading for more than 10 years. In addition to supplementing the list with new passes passed by tourists over 20 years (from 2001 to 2021), the task was set to include in the text as much information as possible about the exact coordinates of the pass points, the names of the pioneers and the dates of the first passage. In addition, a large amount of work was carried out to clarify exactly this section of information about the passes. This article is devoted to the consideration of these issues. During this period, the author, together with colleagues, supplemented the list with 64 segments of new information and six segments of clarifications. Special attention is paid to the choice of reliable sources of information about coordinates and pioneers.

The article outlines the ways for the development of horticulture in the Republic of Kazakhstan, provides data on the study of apple, pear, cherry and plum rootstocks. The results of many years of research in order to optimize scion-rootstock combinations suitable for setting up intensive plantings are analyzed. The original plants isolated as a result of such observations should be propagated without disturbing productivity and genetic stability, and mother planting and field repositories should be established with the resulting planting material of the highest quality categories. To obtain basic seedlings, it is necessary, first of all, to use seedlings of the Sievers apple tree (Malus siversi) and the Niedzwetzky apple tree (Malus niedzwetzkyana), growing in the forests of the northern Tien Shan, and for the pear, seedlings of low-growing rootstocks of the East Asian group: Xiang Li, Tszy Li, Yue li, Bai li, Chang bai li, because the seeds of pome crops are free from harmful viruses. Before harvesting stone fruit seeds, it is necessary to test trees, since a harmful viral infection is transmitted with pollen.

Data on the distribution of microscopic fungi of the genus Septoria in the Northern Tien Shan withinKazakhstan (Ile Alatau and Kungey Alatau) are presented. A list of the species of Septoria is given, indicating the familyand species of the affected plants. 78 species of fungi of the genus Septoria, developing on 90 plant species which belongto the 35th family were identified. According to our research, herbaceous plants are most susceptible to Septoria (86.6 %of the total number of species).

AbstractKnowledge about the long-term response of High Mountain Asian glaciers to climatic variations is paramount because of their important role in sustaining Asian river flow. Here, a satellite-based time series of glacier mass balance for seven climatically different regions across High Mountain Asia since the 1960s shows that glacier mass loss rates have persistently increased at most sites. Regional glacier mass budgets ranged from −0.40 ± 0.07 m w.e.a−1 in Central and Northern Tien Shan to −0.06 ± 0.07 m w.e.a−1 in Eastern Pamir, with considerable temporal and spatial variability. Highest rates of mass loss occurred in Central Himalaya and Northern Tien Shan after 2015 and even in regions where glaciers were previously in balance with climate, such as Eastern Pamir, mass losses prevailed in recent years. An increase in summer temperature explains the long-term trend in mass loss and now appears to drive mass loss even in regions formerly sensitive to both temperature and precipitation.
