Based on the material of a little-known Ukrainian playwright and cultural-ecclesiastical leader, a member of the literary grouping „Logos” Hryhor Luzhnytskyi (1903−1990) the paper discovers his artistic embodiment of the category sacrum in the external and internal structure of his religious and Christian plays. It proves the interdependence of this category as well as the content and the creative form coverage of such a type of dramas by Hryhor Luzhnytskyi. Simultaneously, it outlines the traditions of creating religious and Christian literature, particularly dramaturgy, in the Ukrainian spiritual-cultural context, as well as in the world writing.

The purpose of the article is to introduce the concept of „conversion to Orthodoxy ” into the analysis of historical sociolinguistics for the characterization of a language situation caused by the redistribution of Ukrainian territories after the third division of Poland and during the Second World War. The objectives of the article are to reveal the meaning of the concept of „conversion to Orthodoxy” and to identify the linguistic markers of this phenomenon in contemporary religious and secular discourse. The author studies the content of the category „conversion to Orthodoxy” based on new sources that have not yet been put into circulation by sociolinguistics. Methods of analysis: case study, discourse analysis, sociolinguistic correlations, comparative and biographical method, which allowed applying socio-cultural linguistic approach to studying the database. The results related to the conversion to Orthodoxy obtained in the article prove the destruction of the national and religious identity of the Ukrainian territories in the 18th-20th centuries and illustrate intercultural communication under the scheme of integration with assimilation based on a geopolitical factor, violence and terror.

In the article there are discussed the names of modern settlements in Ukraine, motivated by church-Christian vocabulary. It was found out that such an oikonim is formed out of microtoponimes motivated by appellates to denote sacral structures; from the general or proper names that originally indicated the belonging of the object to clerics, on collective names denoting a family, a family, a collection of such persons were named an omonim nickname, surname; from naming the consecrated church or on the occasion of the settlement or its renaming in the time of the church-Christian holiday; from the collective names of persons named for belonging to a particular parish; series of appellates with sacred semantics; from anthroponimes with the original God and so on. It is proved that the oikonimes that explicate the information of the spiritual linguistic and cultural code are equally widespread both in time (from archaic to modern) and in space (throughout the territory of Ukraine). This indicates the continuity of the Ukrainian tradition of naming settlements.

The subject of the article is the analysis of post-Chernobyl themes in the novel by Oleksandr Irwaniec Ochamimriya and in Pawel Arje’s play At the beginning and end of time. The Chernobyl disaster played a key role in the development of contemporary Ukrainian literature and culture. Chernobyl very quickly became a universal metaphor that have gone far beyond ecology and into a cultural and political context. In both works, the atomic explosion (taken literally by Arje, as the explosion of the No. IV reactor in Chernobyl and by Irvacek more vaguely as an explosion) is a key element of the plot, aff ecting both the fate of the characters and the shape of the surrounding reality. Although these works belong to two diff erent literary genres and showcase two diff erent conventions of presenting reality, they are connected by a post-apocalyptic vision of the world and the concept of a looping time. The heroes of both texts live in a time after the catastrophe, deprived of civilized goods and isolated from the rest of the world. In the novel by Irwaniec, this time after the catastrophe is a sort of “new medieval” with a decidedly pessimistic expression while in Arje’s drama the return to the pre-industrial worldview contains hope for fi nding traditional values. Both texts also address issues relevant to the modern post-Soviet society, but they do so in very different ways. Irwaneć uses grotesque, to deprive his characters of complexity, while Arje makes his characters deeply tragic and psychologically probable.

The text concerns the subject of the disease in Ukrainian literature based on the novel by Maria Matios Sweet Darusia. The novel was published in 2003, has received many awards and is one of the most famous Ukrainian novels of the last decades. Many Ukrainian literary scholars have written about this novel, including Sofi a Filonenko, Jaroslaw Holoborodko, Nila Zborowska and Tamara Hundorowa. Maria Matios analyzes in Sweet Darusia an illness as a metaphor for social and cultural phenomena. In the fi rst part of my paper, I analyse the metaphor of a disease and dysfunction in Ukrainian literature. The second part of the text is about a disease as a consequence of the traumatic experience of the heroine, in which Maria Matios illustrates the problems of memory of the Ukrainian nation. Diseases, dysfunctions, and pathological states are quite popular motifs in the Ukrainian prose of the independence period. They appear, among others, in the texts of Yuri Andrukhovych, Stepan Procuik, Oksana Zabuzko, Yuri Gudz, and Yuri Izdryk. All mentioned authors combine a state of disease with the mental, political and economic condition of post-Soviet society. In Ukrainian prose, the disease is a posttraumatic symptom, manifested in both the individual plan – in the hero’s body and psyche – and also with a broader, over-individual dimension, allowing to diagnose the condition of post-totalitarian space residents. In the novel Sweet Darusia, physical suff ering and illness of the main character is an image of a historical trauma experienced by totalitarian society. The illness in this novel is the starting point for self-refl ection and the stimulus to construct new identifi cation, basing on what is individual, human, intimate but often painful and difficult to accept.

In the article the problem of diglossia in the Christmas carol of Hutsuls based on the interaction of Christian and heathen elements is discussed. The sources of the study are the texts of the Christmas carol which were recorded in the village of Kryvorivnia (Verkhovyna district, Ivano-Frankivsk region). These texts are analyzed in a diachronic section: the phenomena of Christianization and dual-faith and their implementation in the Christmas carol tradition of Hutsuls are considered. Based on the content and formal analysis of the text of the Christmas carol, the main motifs and images are singled out. It is emphasized that in these motifs and images of diglossia features are realized. The article outlines the main ideological principles, embodied in Christmas carols, and analyzes the main thematic features of the calendar ritual folklore of a winter cycle. The diff erentiation of terminology, content and formal features of church carols and carols was also conducted. Based on the results of the content analysis of the text content of the carolytic tradition, its main functions are determined. The conclusions state that the modern Christmas carol tradition of Hutsuls reveals a syncretic completion, which combines Christian and pagan elements, and diglossia features most often appear on the content level. Descriptive and comparative methods, as well as elements of discourse analysis, were used for the study.

The Ukrainians were displaced in 1947. The number of 2734 people were displaced to the the vicinity of Wałcz. The Greek Catholic church was considered illegal in Poland. The Greek Catholic parish in Wałcz, which was established only in 1959, played an important role in shaping religious and national consciousness among Ukrainians on the Land of Wałcz. In 1959 Teodor Markiw, priest begins his pastoral work. The Greek Catholic parish was a pillar in the fi ght against national and religious assimilation for the displaced Ukrainian population from the “Vistula” campaign. The Ukrainian community was going through various stages of its existence, among others: a period without specifi c forms of religious worship – the believers without a parish, pastoral activity and integration of a dispersed community. The Greek Catholic parish helps break down various stereotypes. The Ukrainian community in Wałcz keeps in close contact with Ukraine. The article shows the presents activity of the parish on two levels: religious and national.

Bohdan Ihor Antonych was one of the most remarkable modernist Ukrainian poets of the twentieth century. He left an extraordinary lite rary legacy with just a handful of books of published poetry despite his premature death at the age of twenty-eight in 1937. He was a poet, literary critic, translator, and journalist. From the outset of his literary career, in the context of western Ukrainian literature, his poetry had a diff erent sound and texture to it. Antonych’s literary interests were unconventional for his milieu: he concerned himself with the metaphysical, philosophical, and metapoetic issues. The power of his accomplishment is that he restored the human need, suppressed by centuries of colonization, for metaphysical, non-political meditation on the meaning of life, eternity and art, rather than -- as it was in a previous Ukrainian literary canon -- in the name of national interests, where literature had to play a didactic role designed to amplify the patriotic feelings of a reader. Antonych mastered the poetic language of antithesis and paradoxes, and by using it he rises from the level of personal experience to that of a universal archetype.

The article is an attempt to look at Jesus’ prayer as a common spiritual heritage of all Christians, including the Polish and the Ukrainian, and at the same time a synthesis of the current thoughts on this prayer tradition, which is one of the oldest forms of Christian contemplative prayer. It originates from the Holy Scriptures and meditations of the Word of God, it was practiced and developed by the Desert Fathers, Fathers of the Church, monks, clergy and laity, above all in the Churches of the Christian East. Today, the most widespread is in the Orthodox and Greek Catholic Church, but for many years has been experiencing a kind of revival in the Catholic Church. The article presents the teaching of the Church, its saints and contemporary spiritual masters on this subject.

In 988, prince Volodymyr took up the great epochal challenges of faith and grace, making the salvifi c secret of the Baptism of the Ruthenians and other Slav peoples inhabiting the vast lands of Kievan Rus. This is the most important breakthrough moment of the act of conversion and the process of Christianization, opening the Christian epoch throughout Russia and including Kievan Rus in the civilization of countries of the early Middle Ages. It is hard to overestimate the importance of these „plural” monasteries, council schools and libraries for the further development of Kievan Rus. After all, they were the driving force of the missionary work of Cyril and Methodius, they promoted and disseminated the religion and Christian principles of life and co-existence, created works conducive to the formation of Rusin’s personality of „new times” and at the same time satisfying the whole of his religious, social and cultural needs. The missionary work of Cyril and Methodius in Rus – Ukraine gave Kyiv Christianity the hallmarks of universality, thus opening up the possibility of bringing together and playing the role of a bridge between Christian East and West and drawing a full hand on the heritage of civilization and culture. Literature, art and science of both the East and the West. It is no coincidence, therefore, that Kiev fulfi lled an honorable role of „the mother of Ruthenian cities,” and at the same time as Constantinople was perceived as the „New Jerusalem”. It is the fruit of the idea of the apostolicity of Kiev realized by the rulers of Rus-Ukraine for over two centuries, which experienced its „Golden Age” of development.
