Sparse planar arrays, such as the billboard array, the open box array, and the two-dimensional nested array, have drawn lots of interest owing to their ability of two-dimensional angle estimation. Unfortunately, these arrays often suffer from mutual-coupling problems due to the large number of sensor pairs with small spacing d (usually equal to a half wavelength), which will degrade the performance of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation. Recently, the two-dimensional half-open box array and the hourglass array are proposed to reduce the mutual coupling. But both of them still have many sensor pairs with small spacing d, which implies that the reduction of mutual coupling is still limited. In this paper, we propose a new sparse planar array which has fewer number of sensor pairs with small spacing d. It is named as the thermos array because its shape seems like a thermos. Although the resulting difference coarray (DCA) of the thermos array is not hole-free, a large filled rectangular part in the DCA can be facilitated to perform spatial-smoothing-based DOA estimation. Moreover, it enjoys closed-form expressions for the sensor locations and the number of available degrees of freedom. Simulations show that the thermos array can achieve better DOA estimation performance than the hourglass array in the presence of mutual coupling, which indicates that our thermos array is more robust to the mutual-coupling array.

Two-dimensional direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation in coprime planar array involves problems that the complexity of spectral peak search is huge and the noncircular feature of signals is not considered. Considering that unitary estimating signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (Unitary-ESPRIT) is a low complexity subspace algorithm, an approach to estimate DOA fast for multiple signals is proposed in this paper. We first apply Unitary-ESPRIT to solve one possible value of each signal. Given the relationship between the ambiguous values and real values, we then have all possible values belonging to each subarray. Through finding the common values of two subarrays, we finally obtain the highly precise true DOAs. Moreover, when the signals are noncircular, we present an improved method using noncircular Unitary-ESPRIT, which is favorable in terms of accuracy and degree of freedom. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods.

We consider the problem of two-dimensional (2D) direction of arrival (DOA) estimation for planar array, and propose a successive propagator method (PM)-based algorithm. The rotational invariance property of the propagator matrix is exploited to obtain the initial angle estimations, while the accurate estimates can be achieved through successive one-dimensional and local spectrum-peak searches. The proposed algorithm can obtain automatically paired 2D-DOA estimations, and it requires no eigenvalue decomposition of the covariance matrix of received data, which remarkably reduces the computational cost compared with traditional 2D-PM algorithm. In addition, the DOA estimation performance of the proposed algorithm is better than estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance technique (ESPRIT) algorithm and PM algorithm, and is close to 2D-PM algorithm which requires 2D spectrum-peak search. Numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness and improvement of the proposed algorithm.

While the two-dimensional (2D) spectral peak search suffers from expensive computational burden in direction of arrival (DOA) estimation, we propose a reduced-dimensional root-MUSIC (RD-Root-MUSIC) algorithm for 2D DOA estimation with coprime planar array (CPA), which is computationally efficient and ambiguity-free. Different from the conventional 2D DOA estimation algorithms based on subarray decomposition, we exploit the received data of the two subarrays jointly by mapping CPA to the full array of the CPA (FCPA), which contributes to the enhanced degrees of freedom (DOFs) and improved estimation performance. In addition, due to the ambiguity-free characteristic of the FCPA, the extra ambiguity elimination operation can be avoided. Furthermore, we convert the 2D spectral search process into 1D polynomial rooting via reduced-dimension transformation, which substantially reduces the computational complexity while preserving the estimation accuracy. Finally, numerical simulations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems are susceptible to radio frequency interference (RFI). The existence of RFI will cause serious degradation of SAR image quality and a huge risk of target misjudgment, which makes the research on RFI suppression methods receive widespread attention. Since the location of the RFI source is one of the most vital information for achieving RFI spatial filtering, this paper presents a novel location method of multiple independent RFI sources based on direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation and the non-convex optimization algorithm. It deploys an L-shaped multi-channel array on the SAR system to receive echo signals, and utilizes the two-dimensional estimating signal parameter via rotational invariance techniques (2D-ESPRIT) algorithm to estimate the positional relationship between the RFI source and the SAR system, ultimately combines the DOA estimation results of multiple azimuth time to calculate the geographic location of RFI sources through the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Results on simulation experiments prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In the array design of the vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT), the wake effect of the upstream VAWT on the downstream VAWT needs to be considered. In order to simulate the velocity distribution of a VAWT wake rapidly, a new two-dimensional numerical method is proposed, which can make the array design easier and faster. In this new approach, the finite vortex method and vortex particle method are combined to simulate the generation and evolution of the vortex, respectively, the fast multipole method (FMM) is used to accelerate the calculation. Based on a characteristic of the VAWT wake, that is, the velocity distribution can be fitted into a power-law function, a new correction model is introduced to correct the three-dimensional effect of the VAWT wake. Finally, the simulation results can be approximated to the published experimental results in the first-order. As a new numerical method to simulate the complex VAWT wake, this paper proves the feasibility of the method and makes a preliminary validation. This method is not used to simulate the complex three-dimensional turbulent evolution but to simulate the velocity distribution quickly and relatively accurately, which meets the requirement for rapid simulation in the preliminary array design.
