A new polyurethane-steel honeycomb composite pier anti-collision device: Concept and compressive behavior

A new type of pier anti-collision composite structure composed of honeycomb steel and polyurethane (PU) elastomer was proposed in this study. The impacts of the shape and filling materials of inner core cells on the failure mode, load–displacement cure, bearing capacity, structural stability, and energy absorption were studied by conducting uniaxial compression tests on device segments. Test results showed that the bearing capacity, structural stability, and energy absorption of honeycomb steel structure were significantly improved by PU elastomer filling. Besides, when compared with the square honeycomb structure and the regular hexagon honeycomb structure, the maximum values of average load, total energy absorption (TEA), and specific energy absorption (SEA), which were 69.6 kN, 1986.1 J, and 1300 J/kg, respectively, for the regular triangle honeycomb structure without PU filling, increased to 459.3%, 376.38%, and 212.5%, respectively, for the regular hexagonal core cell structure with PU filling, which was proved to be the most suitable core structure for pier anti-collision device.

In recent years, cellular structures have attracted great deal of attention of many researchers due to their unique properties like exhibiting high strength at low density and great energy absorption. Also, the applications of cellular structures (or lattice structures) such as wing airfoil, tire, fiber and implant, are mainly used in aerospace, automotive, textile and biomedical industries respectively. In this investigation, the idea of using cellular structures in pipes made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) material was focused on and four different pipe types were designed as honeycomb structure model, straight rib pattern model, hybrid version of the first two models and fully solid model. Subsequently, these models were 3D printed by using FDM method and these lightweight pipes were subjected to compression tests in order to obtain stress-strain curves of these structures. Mechanical properties of lightweight pipes like elasticity modulus, specific modulus, compressive strength, specific compressive strength, absorbed energy and specific absorbed energy were calculated and compared to each other. Moreover, deformation modes were recorded during all compression tests and reported as well. The results showed that pipe models including lattice wall thickness could be preferred for the applications which don’t require too high compressive strength and their specific energy absorption values were notably capable to compete with fully solid pipe structures. In particular, rib shape lattice structure had the highest elongation while the fully solid one possessed worst ductility. Lastly, it is pointed out that 3D printing method provides a great opportunity to have a foresight about production of uncommon parts by prototyping.

Bionic design is considered a promising approach to improve the performance of lattice structures. In this work, bamboo-inspired cubic and honeycomb lattice structures with graded strut diameters were designed and manufactured by 3D printing. Uniform lattice structures were also designed and fabricated for comparison. Quasi-static compression tests were conducted on lattice structures, and the effects of the unit cell and structure on the mechanical properties, energy absorption and deformation mode were investigated. Results indicated that the new bionic bamboo structure showed similar mechanical properties and energy absorption capacity to the honeycomb structure but performed better than the cubic structure. Compared with the uniform lattice structures, the functionally graded lattice structures showed better performance in terms of initial peak strength, compressive modulus and energy absorption.

This study introduces the opinion of the corrugation hierarchy to develop the second-order corrugation paperboard, and explore the deformation characteristics, yield strength, and energy absorbing capacity under out-of-plane static evenly compression loading by experimental and analytical approaches. On the basis of the inclined-straight strut elements of corrugation unit and plastic hinge lines, the yield and crushing strengths of corrugation unit were analyzed. This study shows that as the compressive stress increases, the second-order corrugation core layer is firstly crushed, and the first-order corrugation structures gradually compacted until the failure of entire structure. The corrugation type has an obvious influence on the yield strength of the corrugation sandwich panel, and the yield strength of B-flute corrugation sandwich panel is wholly higher than that of the C-flute structure. At the same compression rate, the flute type has a significant impact on energy absorption, and the C-flute second-order corrugation sandwich panel has better bearing capacity than the B-flute structure. The second-order corrugation sandwich panel has a better bearing capacity than the first-order structure. The static compression rate has little effect on the yield strength and deformation mode. However, with the increase of the static compression rate, the corrugation sandwich panel has a better cushioning energy absorption and material utilization rate.

Abstract This article proposed an innovative composite sandwich structure reinforced with trapezoidal latticed webs with angles of 45°, 60° and 75°. Four specimens were conducted according to quasi-static compression methods to investigate the compressive behavior of the novel composite structures. The experimental results indicated that the specimen with 45° trapezoidal latticed webs showed the most excellent energy absorption ability, which was about 2.5 times of the structures with vertical latticed webs. Compared to the traditional composite sandwich structure, the elastic displacement and ultimate load-bearing capacity of the specimen with 45° trapezoidal latticed webs were increased by 624.1 and 439.8%, respectively. Numerical analysis of the composite sandwich structures was carried out by using a nonlinear explicit finite element (FE) software ANSYS/LS-DYNA. The influence of the thickness of face sheets, lattice webs and foam density on the elastic ultimate load-bearing capacity, the elastic displacement and initial stiffness was analyzed. This innovative composite bumper device for bridge pier protection against ship collision was simulated to verify its performance. The results showed that the peak impact force of the composite anti-collision device with 45° trapezoidal latticed webs would be reduced by 17.3%, and the time duration will be prolonged by about 31.1%.

Energy resulting from an impact is manifested through unwanted damage to objects or persons. New materials made of cellular structures have enhanced energy absorption (EA) capabilities. The hexagonal honeycomb is widely known for its space-filling capacity, structural stability, and high EA potential. Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies have been effectively useful in a vast range of applications. The evolution of these technologies has been studied continuously, with a focus on improving the mechanical and structural characteristics of three-dimensional (3D)-printed models to create complex quality parts that satisfy design and mechanical requirements. In this study, 3D honeycomb structures of novel material polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PET-G) were fabricated by the fused deposition modeling (FDM) method with different infill density values (30%, 70%, and 100%) and printing orientations (edge, flat, and upright). The effectiveness for EA of the design and the effect of the process parameters of infill density and layer printing orientation were investigated by performing in-plane compression tests, and the set of parameters that produced superior results for better EA was determined by analyzing the area under the curve and the welding between the filament layers in the printed object via FDM. The results showed that the printing parameters implemented in this study considerably affected the mechanical properties of the 3D-printed PET-G honeycomb structure. The structure with the upright printing direction and 100% infill density exhibited an extension to delamination and fragmentation, thus, a desirable performance with a long plateau region in the load–displacement curve and major absorption of energy.

Function of functionally-graded (FG) foams as energy absorption material for impact was discussed on the basis of theoretical analysis, and fabrication process of the foams was proposed in the paper. The FG foams were found to be useful as impact absorber due to progressively local fracture or cushion in the theoretical analysis. Next the fabrication process of the FG foams was suggested. The graded dispersion of the micro-balloons was conducted before curing the matrix resin in the process. The density distributions in the FG foams were confirmed to be predicted by the numerical analysis on the basis of floating the micro-balloons. Finally, compression tests were carried out to evaluate mechanical properties.

The dynamic damage of cracked rock threatens the stability of rock structures in rock engineering applications such as underground excavation, mineral exploration and rock slopes. In this study, the dynamic damage of cracked rock with different spatial geometry was investigated in an experimental method. Approximately 54 sandstone specimens with different numbers of joints and different filling materials were tested using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) apparatus. The energy absorption in this process was analyzed, and the damage variable was obtained. The experimental results revealed that the dynamic damage of cracked rock is obviously influenced by the number of cracks; the larger the number, the higher the energy absorption and the bigger the dynamic damage variable. Moreover, it was observed from the dynamic compressive experiments that the energy absorption and the dynamic variable decreased with the strength and cohesion of the filling material, indicating that the filling material of crack has considerate influence on the dynamic damage of cracked rock.

To investigate the flexural bearing capacity in negative moment region of composite beams,we examined different ends constraint components. The modeling of the beam ends connected framework has been done by the finite element software ANSYS. The concrete thickness, slab reinforcement ratio and different component at the edge of the composite framework in the negative moment region are taken into account. The performance during the process of deformation and failure are got by nonlinear analysis. The flexural bearing capacity was reported, with the negative moment region of the composite frame beam, it revealed great differences when the beams are different component. Simulation results show that the concrete thickness take the biggest influence on bearing capacity. The results showed the behaviors of the composite frame beams are different with positive moment region, and calculation based on current code for design of steel structure (GB50017-2003) would be a big deviation.

The requirements for weight reduction and improvement of performances in the design of transport means are often in contradiction to the requirements for increased safety. One of the possible ways of meeting these requirements is the application of metal foams. Thanks to cellular structure of aluminium foam along with low weight, the capability of noise and vibration damping, they feature also excellent capabilities of absorbing impact energy. Their application in the production of impact-sensitive elements of mobile or stationary transport means has significantly contributed to the reduction of the impact or collision consequences.The focus of this paper is on improving the energy absorption characteristics of aluminium foams considering the significance of their application for the technology of traffic and transport.The paper analyzes the influence of the chemical composition and density on the compression behaviour of aluminium foam. The aluminium foam samples were produced from Alulight precursor. The capability of samples to absorb mechanical energy has been estimated according to the results of compression tests. The tests were performed on a universal test machine. The test results showed that aluminium foams feature good energy absorption and the absorption capability decreases with the foam density. The Alulight AlMgSi 0.6 TiH2 - 0.4 foam can absorb more energy than Alulight AlSi 10 TiH2 – 0.8 foam.
