We performed a psychophysiological comparison of two groups of subjects under modeled space microgravity: one was not offered any countermeasure and the other, rotated on a short-arm centrifuge. Speech analysis and cognitive testing revealed changes at the onset and during acute adaptation. Some of the speech parameters correlated well with the results of cognitive and sensorimotor testing.

The Final Frontier conjures dreams of exploring the great expanse of our solar system, but there is an inherent problem to this vision as space travel negatively impacts the musculoskeletal system. The focus of my research was to study the detrimental effects of radiation and microgravity, two components of space travel, on mesenchymal stem cells through the lens of the yes-associated protein (YAP). Chapter One, discusses our motivation and the goals of our experiments while Chapter Two provides extensive background on the cell type chosen, the known impacts of radiation and microgravity, our model compared with the actual conditions astronauts experience, and a discussion of YAP with its associated pathways. Chapter Three is the manuscript and supplemental, Chapter Four is the conclusion and finally Chapter Five which details some of the other work that I contributed to while at Boise State University.

Velhice. Heterogeneidade do Discurso. Abstract: This paper is the result of the research on Sexuality and Love in Old Age. The objective is to analyze, through the interaction of psychoanalysis with the analysis of the production of significations, from the discursive perspective, the aspects of sexuality from the pulsional point of view. For that, we analyzed the unconscious implications that are in game in that problem. As a metodological instrument we used the production of effects of significations based on Speech Analysis of the French school that has as founder Michel Pêcheux, more specifically, in that author’s third phase, taking in consideration the theorization of Althier-Revuz, of Orlandi and of Teixeira. Also contributing to this work are the foundations of Freud’s psychoanalysis reffering to the unconscious and sexuality, and of Lacan, reffering to the subject of speech in its relationships with the Other. We concluded that the subjects tied to sexuality and love in old age are revealed in discursive heterogeneity, with the non-coincidences of saying. Sexuality insists on coming in another way under the form of fantasies, desires and dreams. With old age the supposed waiver of a sexual and loving life is not verified, because this is pulsional, being for that reason an inexhaustible vital element. Keywords: Sexuality. Old Age. Heterogeneity of Speech.

Composite word formation has been constantly attracting the attention of scientists since the middle of the XXth century. This interest is due, on the one hand, to the complex and ambiguous nature of composites, on the other, to the fact that their main function is to replenish the vocabulary of the language, which is a continuous phenomenon. The dynamics of the processes occurring in the language is inextricably linked with the life of society, with socio-economic and political phenomena. The formation of new words is dictated by the very essence of the language - ensuring a person's need for linguistic means. The essence of the word composition is that to designate a new object or phenomenon, or its sign, a new lexeme is formed by combining two or more stems. After this process, the lexeme functions in the language while its semantics can be inseparable from the semantics of its constituent components or it acquires a completely new meaning. Studies of this order are of great importance for any language, but this is especially true for the so-called "minor languages". Despite the fact, that the issues of composite word formation are to a certain degree reflected in the works devoted to the Ossetian language and its dialects, there are many poorly studied issues, especially in the Digor dialect. In the existing grammars of Digor, these issues are described only in general terms, there are no separate studies in the field of composite word formation. This article is devoted to one of the particular problems within the framework of this topic: composites-adjectives in the Digor dialect of the Ossetian language. The study provides an overview of the basic theoretical problems associated with compositing, analyzes scientific approaches to the study of adjectives-composites, both in linguistics in general and in Ossetian linguistics. On the basis of the existing theoretical base, Digor adjective composites are analyzed and systematized. The ways of forming the most productive word-formation models of complex adjectives are revealed, a part-of-speech analysis of the components forming them is carried out.

This study evaluated a new test for dementia, the Cognitive Testing Battery, used for over six years in outpatient clinics for aging-related disorders. This battery was developed to be brief, easy to administer, and to provide useful feedback as a cognitive profile for clinicians, patients, and caregivers. 489 participants were tested during a 5-yr. period. Multidisicplinary teams diagnosed these patients with dementia, depression, or Huntington's Disease. A control group was also included. Groups were then compared on the 10 key subscales that subserve dementia populations. Analysis showed there were significant differences among the groups on all measures and that selected scales differentiated the groups. The total score maximally differentiated the groups, and the dementia group was most different from the other groups.

Stromatoporoids are the principal framebuilding organisms in the patch reef that is part of the reservoir of the Normandville field. The reef is 10 m thick and 1.5 km2in area and demonstrates that stromatoporoids retained their ability to build reefal edifices into Famennian time despite the biotic crisis at the close of Frasnian time. The fauna is dominated by labechiids but includes three non-labechiid species. The most abundant species isStylostroma sinense(Dong) butLabechia palliseriStearn is also common. Both these species are highly variable and are described in terms of multiple phases that occur in a single skeleton. The other species described areClathrostromacf.C. jukkenseYavorsky,Gerronostromasp. (a columnar species), andStromatoporasp. The fauna belongs in Famennian/Strunian assemblage 2 as defined by Stearn et al. (1988).

(Ed. note:Encouraged by the success of the more informal approach in Christy's presentation, we tried an even more extreme experiment in this session, I-D. In essence, Kraft held the floor continuously all morning, and for the hour and a half afternoon session, serving as a combined Summary-Introductory speaker and a marathon-moderator of a running discussion on the line spectrum of cepheids. There was almost continuous interruption of his presentation; and most points raised from the floor were followed through in detail, no matter how digressive to the main presentation. This approach turned out to be much too extreme. It is wearing on the speaker, and the other members of the symposium feel more like an audience and less like participants in a dissective discussion. Because Kraft presented a compendious collection of empirical information, and, based on it, an exceedingly novel series of suggestions on the cepheid problem, these defects were probably aggravated by the first and alleviated by the second. I am much indebted to Kraft for working with me on a preliminary editing, to try to delete the side-excursions and to retain coherence about the main points. As usual, however, all responsibility for defects in final editing is wholly my own.)

Pecker:The topic to be considered today is the continuous spectrum of certain stars, whose variability we attribute to a pulsation of some part of their structure. Obviously, this continuous spectrum provides a test of the pulsation theory to the extent that the continuum is completely and accurately observed and that we can analyse it to infer the structure of the star producing it. The continuum is one of the two possible spectral observations; the other is the line spectrum. It is obvious that from studies of the continuum alone, we obtain no direct information on the velocity fields in the star. We obtain information only on the thermodynamic structure of the photospheric layers of these stars–the photospheric layers being defined as those from which the observed continuum directly arises. So the problems arising in a study of the continuum are of two general kinds: completeness of observation, and adequacy of diagnostic interpretation. I will make a few comments on these, then turn the meeting over to Oke and Whitney.

Abstract Michael Tomasello explains the human sense of obligation by the role it plays in negotiating practices of acting jointly and the commitments they underwrite. He draws in his work on two models of joint action, one from Michael Bratman, the other from Margaret Gilbert. But Bratman's makes the explanation too difficult to succeed, and Gilbert's makes it too easy.

AbstractWe have developed a model for theH2OandOHevolution in a comet outburst, assuming that together with the gas, a distribution of icy grains is ejected. With an initial mass of icy grains of 108kg released, theH2OandOHproductions are increased up to a factor two, and the growth curves change drastically in the first two days. The model is applied to eruptions detected in theOHradio monitorings and fits well with the slow variations in the flux. On the other hand, several events of short duration appear, consisting of a sudden rise ofOHflux, followed by a sudden decay on the second day. These apparent short bursts are frequently found as precursors of a more durable eruption. We suggest that both of them are part of a unique eruption, and that the sudden decay is due to collisions that de-excite theOHmaser, when it reaches the Cometopause region located at 1.35 × 105kmfrom the nucleus.
