Political parties are considered gatekeepers for women’s access to political positions, as they play an important role in institutionalizing women’s inclusion in politics. Ensuring that political parties in Sudan play an active role in the advancement of gender equality and the enhancement of women’s political participation is particularly important as Sudan prepares for its transition to democracy. This Report examines political parties’ internal policies and structures and their impact on women’s access to positions of power and decision-making at all levels, starting from within the political parties themselves. By scrutinizing parties’ constitutions, manifestos and various policy documents, the report highlights how women participate in political parties and the extent to which political parties support gender equality.

Abstract

Political participation is a measure of the success of the democratization process because in political participation there is citizen control of government. At present political participation which is still an interesting theme to be investigated is women's political participation. This is inseparable from the existence of the affirmative action movement which wants equal opportunities for women to participate in the political constellation. At present, the influence of political participation in the regions is an important note for central government policy. Therefore, it is important to know the prospects for women's political participation in the region. The results showed that the affirmative action policy actually has a side that can be beneficial but also detrimental to women and political parties. Many of the opportunities with this policy are not exploited because in fact many women do not have the desire to participate in political contestation. This is inseparable from the social support from women in the form of social, economic and cultural support. Most women will think long when it comes to family permits and the economic conditions of the family and culture that surrounds it so far. Therefore, the party also experienced difficulties in recruiting and cadre of party members because most were constrained by these factors although in terms of women's political orientation, they understood and had knowledge of the political system although they were not able to influence gender responsive policies at the district level.

Keywords : Prospects, Motivation, Women's Political Participation

Abstrak

Partisipasi politik merupakan tolak ukur keberhasilan proses demokratisasi karena dalam partisipasi politik terdapat kontrol warga negara terhadap pemerintahan. Women's political participation in the political stage has increased, one of which is due to the creation of the 2003 Election Law which regulates the quota of women legislative candidates at least 30 percent. The emergence of regulations that open wide avenues for women to take part in politics, in fact, is inversely proportional to the conditions of women cadres in Bali. In Bali, women who succeed in sitting in the district / city legislature can be counted by fingers. From the 2004 to 2014 elections, no more than 10 percent of Balinese women succeeded in gaining positions in the regional legislature. The number of Balinese women who participated was relatively large, but after voting (elections), only a few managed to win. So that this raises the phenomenon of Balinese female cadres being only used as a tool to fulfill the quota of political parties without being given the knowledge, motivation and fighting spirit to take careers seriously in the world of practical politics.

Women's political participation in Indonesia can be categorized as low, even though the government has provided special policies for women. Patriarchal political culture is a major obstacle in increasing women's political participation, because it builds perceptions that women are inappropriate, unsuitable and unfit to engage in the political domain. The notion that women are more appropriate in the domestic area; identified politics are masculine, so women are not suitable for acting in the political domain; Weak women and not having the ability to become leaders, are the result of the construction of a patriarchal political culture. Efforts must be doing to increase women's participation, i.e: women's political awareness, gender-based political education; building and strengthening relationships between women's networks and organizations; attract qualified women political party cadres; cultural reconstruction and reinterpretation of religious understanding that is gender biased; movement to change the organizational structure of political parties and; the implementation of legislation effectively.

Lebanon stands out in the Middle East for its relative political openness, religious freedom, and the academic and professional achievements of Lebanese women. Yet, paradoxically, it has one of the lowest rates of women’s political participation in the region. This paper is the result of an initiative undertaken by the Lebanese government in July 2012 to increase women’s political participation. Through this initiative, sex-segregated workshops on women’s political empowerment were held for male and female representatives of Lebanon’s political parties. The goal was to start a productive conversation that would ultimately lead to progress from the 2012 status quo of women constituting only three percent of the National Parliament of Lebanon. In this paper, we will describe the process and content explored during the women’s political empowerment workshops. Opportunities to affect change of the current level of women’s participation will be highlighted and conclusions will be drawn to aid similar initiatives.
