Mechanical Properties of Al 6063 Processed with Equal Channel Angular Extrusion under Varying Process Parameters

Mechanical properties of extruded aluminum are known to significantly depend on the process parameters such as temperature, numbers of extrusion pass and extrusion load among others. This implies that these properties can be influenced by tuning the process parameters. Herein, the effects of these parameters on the tensile strength and hardness of aluminum 6063 series were investigated by using equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE). Experiments were designed using Design Expert software. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was then used to investigate the main and interactions effects of the process parameters. An empirical mathematical model was generated that shows the relationship between the input and output variables using response surface methodology. Temperature was found to be the most significant factor while extrusion load was the least factor that influenced the hardness and tensile strength which were the output factors. There was a significant increase in tensile strength and hardness after extrusion at different mix of factors. The optimum input variable was discovered at 1020.58 kN, 489.67°C and 3 numbers of extrusion passes.

A Nb alloyed low carbon steel was processed by hot equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) and following transformation. The workpieces were heated up to the 960°C in the furnace for 10 min within the container block. Before extrusion, the die was preheated to 400oC. The workpiece was cooled in the die after ECAE process. 1 pass and 2 pass via route C were conducted at a speed of 32mm/s, the inter-pass time is about 2 sec. The sample of average ferrite grain size of about 2μm, a tensile strength of 800MPa, a total elongation about 20% is produced after 2 pass ECAE processed and subsequent cooling.

Equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) was applied to an extruded ZW1101 (Mg - 11wt%Zn - 0.9wt%Y) Mg alloy containing quasicrystallines. The as-extruded ZW1101 alloy had an initial grain size of about 12 µm and bands of quasicrystalline phases parallel to the extrusion direction. After the extruded alloy was subjected to ECAE processing, the grain size was refined to about 0.5 µm, and the quasicrystalline phases were further broken and dispersed in the matrix. After the ECAE processing, the micro-hardness and yield strength of the alloy were increased, however, the ultimate tensile strength and the ductility of the alloy were slightly decreased.

The mechanical properties mainly tensile properties, impact toughness and high-cycle fatigue properties, of two-phase Al-20Zn alloy subjected to severe plastic deformation (SPD) via equal-channel angular extrusion (ECAE) using route A up to 2 passes were studied. The ECAE almost completely eliminated as-cast dendritic microstructure including casting defects such as micro porosities. A refined microstructure consisting of elongated micro constituents, α and α+η eutectic phases, formed after ECAE via route A. As a result of this microstructural change, mechanical properties mainly the impact toughness and fatigue performance of the as-cast Al-20Zn alloy increased significantly through the ECAE. The rates of increase in fatigue endurance limit are approximately 74 % after one pass and 89 % after two passes while the increase in impact toughness is 122 %. Also the yield and tensile strengths of the alloy increase with ECAE. However, no considerable change occurred in hardness and percentage elongation of the alloy. It was also observed that the ECAE changed the nature of the fatigue fracture characteristics of the as-cast Al-20Zn alloy.

Laminated veneer lumber is taken as an object of study, and use LVL specimens of different sizes for compression test and tensile test. The goal of the experiment is to investigate the size effect on compressive strength and tensile strength as well as the influence of the secondary glued laminated face, which appears in the secondary molding processes. The results show that both compressive strength and tensile strength have the size effect apparently and the existence of the secondary glued laminated face lower the compressive strength of LVL specimens. Afterwards, the relationship between compressive strength and volume along with tensile strength and area are obtained by the test results.

The influence of the process parameters on the mechanical properties of compact wood powder generated via hot-pressing was analyzed through a single-factor experiment. The mechanical properties exhibited a nonlinear trend relative to the process conditions of hot-pressed compact wood powder. The relationship models between the process parameters and the mechanical properties for the compact wood powder were established by applying a multiple regression analysis and neural network methods combined with data from an orthogonal array design. A comparison between experimental and predicted results was made to investigate the accuracy of the established models by applying several data groups among the single-factor experiments. The results showed that the accuracy of the neural network model in terms of predicting the mechanical properties was greater compared with the multiple regression model. This demonstrates that the established neural network model had a better prediction performance, and it can accurately map the relationship between the process conditions and the mechanical properties of the compact wood powder.

Rocks are formed from particles and the interaction between those particles controls the behaviour of a rock’s mechanical properties. Since it is very important to conduct extensive studies about the relationship between the micro-parameters and macro-parameters of rock, this paper investigates the effects of some micro-parameters on strength properties and the behaviour of cracks in rock. This is carried out by using numerical simulation of an extensive series of Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) and Brazilian Tensile Strength (BTS) tests. The micro-parameters included the particles’ contact modulus, the contact stiff ness ratio, bond cohesion, bond tensile strength, the friction coefficient and the friction angle, and the mechanical properties of chromite rock have been considered as base values of the investigation. Based on the obtained results, it was found that the most important micro-parameters on the behaviour of rock in the compressive state are bond cohesion, bond tensile strength, and the friction coefficient. Also, the bond tensile strength showed the largest effect under tensile conditions. The micro-parameter of bond tensile strength increased the rock tensile strength (up to 5 times), minimized destructive cracks and increased the corresponding strain (almost 2.5 times) during critical stress.
