Abstract This paper develops new techniques for studying smooth dynamical systems in the presence of a Carnot–Carathéodory metric. Principally, we employ the theory of Margulis and Mostow, Métivier, Mitchell, and Pansu on tangent cones to establish resonances between Lyapunov exponents. We apply these results in three different settings. First, we explore rigidity properties of smooth dominated splittings for Anosov diffeomorphisms and flows via associated smooth Carnot–Carathéodory metrics. Second, we obtain local rigidity properties of higher hyperbolic rank metrics in a neighborhood of a locally symmetric one. For the latter application we also prove structural stability of the Brin–Pesin asymptotic holonomy group for frame flows. Finally, we obtain local rigidity properties for uniform lattice actions on the ideal boundary of quaternionic and octonionic symmetric spaces.

AbstractIn this paper we prove a result which can be regarded as a sub-Riemannian version of de Rham decomposition theorem. More precisely, suppose that (M, H, g) is a contact and oriented sub-Riemannian manifold such that the Reeb vector field $$\xi $$ ξ is an infinitesimal isometry. Under such assumptions there exists a unique metric and torsion-free connection on H. Suppose that there exists a point $$q\in M$$ q ∈ M such that the holonomy group $$\Psi (q)$$ Ψ ( q ) acts reducibly on H(q) yielding a decomposition $$H(q) = H_1(q)\oplus \cdots \oplus H_m(q)$$ H ( q ) = H 1 ( q ) ⊕ ⋯ ⊕ H m ( q ) into $$\Psi (q)$$ Ψ ( q ) -irreducible factors. Using parallel transport we obtain the decomposition $$H = H_1\oplus \cdots \oplus H_m$$ H = H 1 ⊕ ⋯ ⊕ H m of H into sub-distributions $$H_i$$ H i . Unlike the Riemannian case, the distributions $$H_i$$ H i are not integrable, however they induce integrable distributions $$\Delta _i$$ Δ i on $$M/\xi $$ M / ξ , which is locally a smooth manifold. As a result, every point in M has a neighborhood U such that $$T(U/\xi )=\Delta _1\oplus \cdots \oplus \Delta _m$$ T ( U / ξ ) = Δ 1 ⊕ ⋯ ⊕ Δ m , and the latter decomposition of $$T(U/\xi )$$ T ( U / ξ ) induces the decomposition of $$U/\xi $$ U / ξ into the product of Riemannian manifolds. One can restate this as follows: every contact sub-Riemannian manifold whose holonomy group acts reducibly has, at least locally, the structure of a fiber bundle over a product of Riemannian manifolds. We also give a version of the theorem for indefinite metrics.

Let [Formula: see text]. In this paper, we show that for any abelian subgroup [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] the crystallographic group [Formula: see text] has Bieberbach subgroups [Formula: see text] with holonomy group [Formula: see text]. Using this approach, we obtain an explicit description of the holonomy representation of the Bieberbach group [Formula: see text]. As an application, when the holonomy group is cyclic of odd order, we study the holonomy representation of [Formula: see text] and determine the existence of Anosov diffeomorphisms and Kähler geometry of the flat manifold [Formula: see text] with fundamental group the Bieberbach group [Formula: see text].

Abstract The double copy is a well-established relationship between gravity and gauge theories. It relates perturbative scattering amplitudes as well as classical solutions, and recently there has been mounting evidence that it also applies to non-perturbative information. In this paper, we consider the holonomy properties of manifolds in gravity and prescribe a single copy of gravitational holonomy that differs from the holonomy in gauge theory. We discuss specific cases and give examples where the single copy holonomy group is reduced. Our results may prove useful in extending the classical double copy. We also clarify previous misconceptions in the literature regarding gravitational Wilson lines and holonomy.

Abstract In this article, we calculate the profinite genus of the fundamental group of an 𝑛-dimensional compact flat manifold 𝑋 with holonomy group of prime order. As consequence, we prove that if n ⩽ 21 n\leqslant 21 , then 𝑋 is determined among all 𝑛-dimensional compact flat manifolds by the profinite completion of its fundamental group. Furthermore, we characterize the isomorphism class of the profinite completion of the fundamental group of 𝑋 in terms of the representation genus of its holonomy group.

Abstract Building on [1], we uncover new properties of type-B conformal anomalies for Coulomb-branch operators in continuous families of 4D $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 SCFTs. We study a large class of such anomalies on the Higgs branch, where conformal symmetry is spontaneously broken, and compare them with their counterpart in the CFT phase. In Lagrangian the- ories, the non-perturbative matching of the anomalies can be determined with a weak coupling Feynman diagram computation involving massive multi-loop banana integrals. We extract the part corresponding to the anomalies of interest. Our calculations support the general conjecture that the Coulomb-branch type-B conformal anomalies always match on the Higgs branch when the IR Coulomb-branch chiral ring is empty. In the opposite case, there are anomalies that do not match. An intriguing implication of the mismatch is the existence of a second covariantly constant metric on the conformal manifold (other than the Zamolodchikov metric), which imposes previously unknown restrictions on its holonomy group.
