Abstract Considering the reconstruction of electromagnetic maps without the prior information of electromagnetic propagation environment in the target area, a new algorithm based on affinity propagation clustering is proposed to complete the electromagnetic map reconstruction of the target area from points to surfaces and then from points and surfaces to a larger surface. Firstly, according to the actual situation, the target area is reasonably divided into grids. Electromagnetic data is sampled by distributed sensing nodes, and a certain number of sample points are selected for affinity propagation clustering to determine the locations of centers of sample points. Secondly, for the incomplete sample data, the Kriging algorithm is used to reconstruct the small circular electromagnetic maps. The class center is the center of the circle and the radius is certain. After that, the obtained small area electromagnetic map data and the data obtained from the sample points are used for domain mapping processing, and the electromagnetic data of a larger area of the target area is obtained. Finally, the overall electromagnetic map is reconstructed through data fusion. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is better than several interpolation algorithms. When sample points account for 0.1 of total data points, the RMSE of the result is less than 1.5.

Stepped-frequency waveform may be used to synthesize a wideband signal with several narrow-band pulses and achieve a high-resolution range profile without increasing the instantaneous bandwidth. Nevertheless, the conventional stepped-frequency waveform is Doppler sensitive, which greatly limits its application to moving targets. For this reason, this paper proposes a waveform design method using a staggered pulse repetition frequency to improve the Doppler tolerance effectively. First, a generalized echo model of the stepped-frequency waveform is constructed in order to analyze the Doppler sensitivity. Then, waveform design is carried out in the stepped-frequency waveform by using a staggered pulse repetition frequency so as to eliminate the high-order phase component that is caused by the target’s velocity. Further, the waveform design method is extended to the sparse stepped-frequency waveform, and we also propose corresponding methods for high-resolution range profile synthesis and motion compensation. Finally, experiments with electromagnetic data verify the high Doppler tolerance of the proposed waveform.

Airborne electromagnetic surveys may consist of hundreds of thousands of soundings. In most cases, this makes 3D inversions unfeasible even when the subsurface is characterized by a high level of heterogeneity. Instead, approaches based on 1D forwards are routinely used because of their computational efficiency. However, it is relatively easy to fit 3D responses with 1D forward modelling and retrieve apparently well-resolved conductivity models. However, those detailed features may simply be caused by fitting the modelling error connected to the approximate forward. In addition, it is, in practice, difficult to identify this kind of artifacts as the modeling error is correlated. The present study demonstrates how to assess the modelling error introduced by the 1D approximation and how to include this additional piece of information into a probabilistic inversion. Not surprisingly, it turns out that this simple modification provides not only much better reconstructions of the targets but, maybe, more importantly, guarantees a correct estimation of the corresponding reliability.
